Matthew 14
1 AT that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report of Jesus,
in illo tempore audiit Herodes tetrarcha famam Iesu
2 and said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore miracles are wrought by him.
et ait pueris suis hic est Iohannes Baptista ipse surrexit a mortuis et ideo virtutes inoperantur in eo
3 For Herod having seized John, had bound him, and put him in prison, for the sake of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother.
Herodes enim tenuit Iohannem et alligavit eum et posuit in carcere propter Herodiadem uxorem fratris sui
4 For John said unto him, It is unlawful for thee to have her.
dicebat enim illi Iohannes non licet tibi habere eam
5 And though he wished to kill him, he was afraid of the multitude, for they held him as a prophet.
et volens illum occidere timuit populum quia sicut prophetam eum habebant
6 But when Herod’s birth-day was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced in the circle, and pleased Herod:
die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio et placuit Herodi
7 so that with an oath he promised to give her whatever she should ask.
unde cum iuramento pollicitus est ei dare quodcumque postulasset ab eo
8 And she, being previously urged on by her mother, said, Give me here, in a spacious dish, the head of John the Baptist.
at illa praemonita a matre sua da mihi inquit hic in disco caput Iohannis Baptistae
9 And the king was grieved: but for his oath’s sake, and on account of those who were with him, he commanded it to be given her.
et contristatus est rex propter iuramentum autem et eos qui pariter recumbebant iussit dari
10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
misitque et decollavit Iohannem in carcere
11 And his head was brought on a large dish, and was given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother.
et adlatum est caput eius in disco et datum est puellae et tulit matri suae
12 And his disciples came and took the body, and buried it, and they came and told Jesus.
et accedentes discipuli eius tulerunt corpus et sepelierunt illud et venientes nuntiaverunt Iesu
13 And when Jesus heard it, he withdrew from thence in a vessel into a desert place apart: and when the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.
quod cum audisset Iesus secessit inde in navicula in locum desertum seorsum et cum audissent turbae secutae sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus
14 And when Jesus was come forth, he saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion towards them, and healed their sick.
et exiens vidit turbam multam et misertus est eius et curavit languidos eorum
15 But when evening was come, his disciples came unto him, saying, The place is desert, and the day is far advanced; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves provisions.
vespere autem facto accesserunt ad eum discipuli eius dicentes desertus est locus et hora iam praeteriit dimitte turbas ut euntes in castella emant sibi escas
16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart: give ye them to eat.
Iesus autem dixit eis non habent necesse ire date illis vos manducare
17 And they said unto him, We have nothing here except five loaves and two fishes.
responderunt ei non habemus hic nisi quinque panes et duos pisces
18 Then he said, Bring them hither to me.
qui ait eis adferte illos mihi huc
19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fishes, looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
et cum iussisset turbam discumbere supra faenum acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus aspiciens in caelum benedixit et fregit et dedit discipulis panes discipuli autem turbis
20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up the superabundance of the fragments, twelve baskets full.
et manducaverunt omnes et saturati sunt et tulerunt reliquias duodecim cofinos fragmentorum plenos
21 And they who had eaten, were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
manducantium autem fuit numerus quinque milia virorum exceptis mulieribus et parvulis
22 And immediately Jesus compelled his disciples to go on board the vessel, and pass before him to the other side, while he dismissed the people.
et statim iussit discipulos ascendere in navicula et praecedere eum trans fretum donec dimitteret turbas
23 And when he had sent away the multitude, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when evening came, he was there alone.
et dimissa turba ascendit in montem solus orare vespere autem facto solus erat ibi
24 But the vessel was already in the midst of the sea, tossed with the waves: for the wind was contrary.
navicula autem in medio mari iactabatur fluctibus erat enim contrarius ventus
25 Then at the fourth watch of the night came Jesus unto them, walking on the sea.
quarta autem vigilia noctis venit ad eos ambulans supra mare
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were greatly agitated, saying, It is his apparition. And they cried out with terror.
et videntes eum supra mare ambulantem turbati sunt dicentes quia fantasma est et prae timore clamaverunt
27 And immediately Jesus spake to them, saying, Be of good courage: it is I; be not terrified.
statimque Iesus locutus est eis dicens habete fiduciam ego sum nolite timere
28 Then Peter answering, said, Lord, if it be thou, command me to come unto thee upon the waters.
respondens autem Petrus dixit Domine si tu es iube me venire ad te super aquas
29 And he said, Come. And descending from the vessel, Peter walked upon the waters to come to Jesus.
at ipse ait veni et descendens Petrus de navicula ambulabat super aquam ut veniret ad Iesum
30 But seeing the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink in the deep, he cried out, saying, Lord save me.
videns vero ventum validum timuit et cum coepisset mergi clamavit dicens Domine salvum me fac
31 Then immediately Jesus stretching out his hand, laid hold on him, and said to him, O thou of little faith, wherefore dost thou doubt?
et continuo Iesus extendens manum adprehendit eum et ait illi modicae fidei quare dubitasti
32 And when they came aboard the vessel, the wind ceased.
et cum ascendissent in naviculam cessavit ventus
33 And they who were in the vessel, came and worshipped him, saying, Truly thou art the Son of God.
qui autem in navicula erant venerunt et adoraverunt eum dicentes vere Filius Dei es
34 And passing over, they came to the land of Gennesareth.
et cum transfretassent venerunt in terram Gennesar
35 And when the men of that place knew him, they sent into all that neighbourhood, and brought to him all that had illnesses:
et cum cognovissent eum viri loci illius miserunt in universam regionem illam et obtulerunt ei omnes male habentes
36 and they besought him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment: and as many as touched it were cured.
et rogabant eum ut vel fimbriam vestimenti eius tangerent et quicumque tetigerunt salvi facti sunt
