< 1 Timothy 5 >

1 REBUKE not harshly an aged man, but admonish him as a father; the younger men as brethren;
ⲁ̅ⲟⲩϧⲉⲗⲗⲟ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲣϯⲧⲉⲛϣⲓ ⲛⲁϥ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲙⲁⲛⲟⲙϯ ⲛⲁϥ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲫⲣⲏϯ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲓⲱⲧ ⲛⲓ⳿ⲁⲗⲱⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲫⲣⲏϯ ⳿ⲛϩⲁⲛ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ.
2 the aged women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
ⲃ̅ⲛⲓϧⲉⲗⲗⲱ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲫⲣⲏϯ ⳿ⲛϩⲁⲛⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲓ⳿ⲁⲗⲱⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛϩⲓ⳿ⲟⲙⲓ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲫⲣⲏϯ ⳿ⲛϩⲁⲛⲥⲱⲛⲓ ⳿ⲛ⳿ϧⲣⲏⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ⲧⲟⲩⲃⲟ ⲛⲓⲃⲉⲛ.
3 Honour the widows, that are widows indeed.
ⲅ̅ⲛⲓⲭⲏⲣⲁ ⲙⲁⲧⲁⲓⲱⲟⲩ ⲛⲏⲉⲧⲉ ⲟⲛⲧⲱⲥ ϩⲁⲛⲭⲏⲣⲁ ⲛⲉ.
4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn as their first duty to shew their piety towards their own family, and make a grateful return to their progenitors: for this is becoming and acceptable before God.
ⲇ̅ⲓⲥϫⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲟⲩⲭⲏⲣⲁ ⳿ⲉⲟⲩⲟⲛⲧⲁⲥ ⳿ⲛϩⲁⲛϣⲏ ⲣⲓ ⲓⲉ ϩⲁⲛϣⲏⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲙⲁⲣⲟⲩⲥⲁⲃⲟ ⳿ⲛϣⲟⲣⲡ ⲉⲩⲙⲉⲧⲉⲩⲥⲉⲃⲏⲥ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲟⲩⲏⲓ ⳿ⲙⲙⲓⲛ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲟⲩ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛⲥⲉϯⲧⲁⲓⲟ ⳿ⲛⲛⲟⲩϣⲟⲣⲡ ⳿ⲛⲓⲟϯ ⲫⲁⲓ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉⲑⲛⲁⲛⲉϥ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲉⲧϣⲏⲡ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉ⳿ⲙⲑⲟ ⳿ⲙⲫϯ.
5 But she who is a widow indeed, and abandoned to solitude, hopeth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
ⲉ̅ⲑⲏ ⲉⲧⲉ ⲟⲛⲧⲱⲥ ⲟⲩⲭⲏⲣⲁ ⲧⲉ ⲉⲥⲥⲟϫⲡ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩⲁⲧⲥ ⲁⲥⲉⲣϩⲉⲗⲡⲓⲥ ⳿ⲉⲫϯ ⲉⲥⲙⲏⲛ ⳿ⲉⲛⲓ⳿ⲡⲣⲟⲥⲉⲩⲭⲏ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲛⲓⲧⲱⲃϩ ⳿ⲛϫⲱⲣϩ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲙⲉⲣⲓ.
6 But she who lives voluptuously is dead, though she liveth.
ⲋ̅ⲑⲏ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲧϫⲉⲣϫⲉⲣ ⲁⲥⲙⲟⲩ ⲉⲥⲟⲛϧ.
7 And these things inculcate, that they may be blameless.
ⲍ̅ϩⲟⲛϩⲉⲛ ⳿ⲛⲛⲁⲓⲕⲉⲭⲱⲟⲩⲛⲓ ϩⲓⲛⲁ ⳿ⲛⲥⲉϣⲱⲡⲓ ⲉⲩⲟⲓ ⳿ⲛⲁⲧⲗⲱⲓϫⲓ.
8 But if any man provide not for his own relations, and especially for those more immediately of his own family, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
ⲏ̅ⲓⲥϫⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲟⲩⲁⲓ ⳿ⲛϥⲓⲫⲣⲱⲟⲩϣ ⲁⲛ ⲙⲁⲗⲓⲥⲧⲁ ⲛⲁ ⲡⲉϥⲏⲓ ⳿ⲙⲙⲓⲛ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲁϥϫⲉⲗ ⳿ⲫⲛⲁϩϯ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ϥϩⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲉⲟⲩⲁⲑⲛⲁϩϯ.
9 Let no widow be put on the list under sixty years of age, who hath been the wife of one husband,
ⲑ̅ⲟⲩⲭⲏⲣⲁ ⲙⲁⲣⲟⲩⲙⲟⲩϯ ⳿ⲉⲣⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲥⲁⲡⲉⲥⲏⲧ ⳿ⲛⲝ̅ ⳿ⲛⲣⲟⲙⲡⲓ ⲁⲛ ⳿ⲉⲁⲥⲉⲣ⳿ⲥϩⲓⲙⲓ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩϩⲁⲓ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲱⲧ.
10 bringing attestation of her good works; that she hath well educated her children, that she hath been hospitable to strangers, that she hath washed the saints feet, that she hath assisted the afflicted, that she hath followed diligently every good work.
ⲓ̅ⲉⲩⲉⲣⲙⲉⲑⲣⲉ ϧⲁⲣⲟⲥ ϧⲉⲛ ϩⲁⲛ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⳿ⲉⲛⲁⲛⲉⲩ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛ ⲁⲥϣⲁⲛⲉϣ ϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲓⲉ ⲁⲥϣⲉⲡ ϣⲉⲙⲙⲟ ⳿ⲉⲣⲟⲥ ⲓⲉ ⲁⲥⲓⲁ ⲣⲁⲧⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲛⲏⲉⲑⲟⲩⲁⲃ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲓⲉ ⲁⲥϣⲱⲡⲓ ϧⲁϫⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲛⲏⲉⲧϩⲉϫϩⲱϫ ⲓⲉ ⲁⲛ ⲁⲥⲙⲟϣⲓ ⳿ⲛⲥⲁ ϩⲱⲃ ⲛⲓⲃⲉⲛ ⲉⲑⲛⲁⲛⲉⲩ.
11 But the younger widows reject: for when they give themselves to wantonness contrary to Christ, they will marry;
ⲓ̅ⲁ̅ⲛⲓ⳿ⲁⲗⲱⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛⲭⲏⲣⲁ ϩⲉⲛⲕ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲟⲩ ϩⲟⲧⲁⲛ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲁⲩϣⲁⲛϫⲉⲣϫⲉⲣ ⳿ⲛⲥⲁ Ⲡⲭ̅ⲥ̅ ϣⲁⲩⲟⲩⲱϣ ⳿ⲉϭⲓϩⲁⲓ.
12 incurring censure, for having violated their former engagement.
ⲓ̅ⲃ̅⳿ⲉⲟⲩⲟⲛⲧⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩϩⲁⲡ ϫⲉ ⲡⲓⲛⲁϩϯ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ϣⲟⲣⲡ ⲁⲩϫⲟⲗϥ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ.
13 And at the same time also they learn to be idle, visiting about in the houses; and not merely idle, but talkative and inquisitive, speaking things they ought not.
ⲓ̅ⲅ̅ⲁⲙⲁ ⲇⲉ ϣⲁⲩⲉⲣ⳿ⲡⲕⲉⲥⲁⲃⲟ ⳿ⲉⲉⲣⲁⲣⲅⲟⲥ ⲉⲩⲕⲱϯ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲓⲏⲓ ⲟⲩ ⲙⲟⲛⲟⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲣⲅⲟⲥ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲛⲉⲙ ⳿ⲡⲗⲓⲁⲣⲟⲥ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡⲉⲣⲓⲉⲣⲅⲟⲥ ⲉⲩⲥⲁϫⲓ ⳿ⲛⲛⲏⲉⲧⲥⲉ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲡϣⲁ ⲁⲛ.
14 I would therefore have the younger widows to marry, bear children, govern their house, give no occasion to the adversary to bring a reproach on them.
ⲓ̅ⲇ̅ϯⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲟⲩⲛ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲛⲓ⳿ⲁⲗⲱⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⳿ⲛϩⲓ⳿ⲟⲙⲓ ϭⲓϩⲁⲓ ⳿ⲛⲥⲉ⳿ϫⲫⲉ ϣⲏⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛⲥⲉⲉⲣⲛⲏⲃ ⳿ⲉⲡⲟⲩⲏⲓ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϣⲧⲉⲙϯ ⳿ϩⲗⲓ ⳿ⲛⲗⲱⲓϫⲓ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲁⲛⲧⲓⲕⲓⲙⲉⲛⲟⲥ ⲉⲑⲃⲉ ⲟⲩϩⲱⲟⲩϣ.
15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.
ⲓ̅ⲉ̅ϩⲏⲇⲏ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲁ ϩⲁⲛⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲣⲁⲕⲟⲩ ⲥⲁⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲡⲥⲁⲧⲁⲛⲁⲥ.
16 But if any man or woman who believes hath widows their relations, let him provide for them, and let not the church be burdened; that there may be a sufficiency for the real widows.
ⲓ̅ⲋ̅ⲉϣⲱⲡ ⳿ⲉⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲟⲩⲡⲓⲥⲧⲏ ⳿ⲉⲟⲩⲟⲛⲧⲁⲥ ⳿ⲛϩⲁⲛⲭⲏ ⲣⲁ ⲙⲁⲣⲉⲥⲣⲱⲟⲩϣ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲟⲩ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲛ⳿ⲑⲣⲟⲩⲟⲩⲁϩⲃⲁⲣⲟⲥ ⳿ⲉϯⲉⲕ⳿ⲕⲗⲏⲥⲓⲁ ϩⲓⲛⲁ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲥⲣⲱϣⲓ ⳿ⲉⲛⲏⲉⲧⲉ ⲟⲛⲧⲱⲥ ϩⲁⲛⲭⲏⲣⲁ ⲛⲉ.
17 Let the elders who preside properly be counted worthy of double honour, especially those who are laborious in preaching and teaching.
ⲓ̅ⲍ̅ⲛⲓ⳿ⲡⲣⲉⲥⲃⲩⲧⲉⲣⲟⲥ ⲉⲧⲟⲓ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲡⲣⲟⲉⲥⲧⲱⲥ ⳿ⲛⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ ⲙⲁⲣⲟⲩⲉⲙ⳿ⲡϣⲁ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲧⲁⲓⲟ ⲉϥⲕⲏⲃ ⲙⲁⲗⲓⲥⲧⲁ ⲛⲏⲉⲧϧⲟⲥⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲡⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛⲉⲙ ϯ⳿ⲥⲃⲱ.
18 For the Scripture saith, “Thou shalt not muzzle the ox while he treadeth out the corn.” And again, “The labourer is worthy of his hire.”
ⲓ̅ⲏ̅⳿ⲥϫⲱ ⲅⲁⲣ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ϯ⳿ⲅⲣⲁⲫⲏ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲛⲛⲉⲕϯⲥⲁⲭⲟⲗ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϩⲣⲉⲛ ⲉϩⲉ ⲉϥϩⲓ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲡⲓⲉⲣⲅⲁⲧⲏ ⲥ ⳿ϥⲉⲙ⳿ⲡϣⲁ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉϥⲃⲉⲭⲉ.
19 Against a presbyter receive not an accusation, except it be from two or three witnesses.
ⲓ̅ⲑ̅⳿ⲛⲛⲉⲕϭⲓ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲕⲁⲧⲏⲅⲟⲣⲓⲁ ϧⲁ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲡⲣⲉⲥⲃⲩⲧⲉⲣⲟⲥ ⲥⲁⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲙⲙⲉⲑⲣⲉ ⲃ̅ ⲓⲉ ⲅ̅.
20 Those who sin rebuke before all, that the rest also may tremble.
ⲕ̅ⲛⲏⲉⲧⲉⲣⲛⲟⲃⲓ ⲥⲁϩⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉ⳿ⲙⲑⲟ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲛⲓⲃⲉⲛ ϩⲓⲛⲁ ⳿ⲡⲕⲉⲥⲉⲡⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲟⲩϩⲟϯ ϣⲱⲡⲓ ⲛⲱⲟⲩ.
21 I adjure thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality.
ⲕ̅ⲁ̅ϯⲉⲣⲙⲉⲑⲣⲉ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉ⳿ⲙⲑⲟ ⳿ⲙⲫϯ ⲛⲉⲙ Ⲡⲭ̅ⲥ̅ Ⲓⲏ̅ⲥ̅ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲛⲉϥⲥⲱⲧⲡ ⳿ⲛⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲟⲥ ϩⲓⲛⲁ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲕⲁⲣⲉϩ ⳿ⲉⲛⲁⲓ ⲁϭⲛⲉ ⳿ⲑⲙⲁⲓ⳿ⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ϧⲁϫⲉⲛ ⳿ⲡϩⲁⲡ ⳿ⲛⲕⲉⲣ ⳿ϩⲗⲓ ⲁⲛ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ ⲟⲩⲣⲓⲕⲓ.
22 Lay hands hastily on no man, nor share another’s sins: keep thyself pure;
ⲕ̅ⲃ̅⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲣⲭⲁ ϫⲓϫ ⳿ⲉϫⲉⲛ ⳿ϩⲗⲓ ⳿ⲛⲭⲱⲗⲉⲙ ⲟⲩⲇⲉ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲣⲉⲣ⳿ϣⲫⲏⲣ ⳿ⲉϩⲁⲛⲛⲟⲃⲓ ⳿ⲛϣⲉⲙⲙⲟ ⲁⲣⲉϩ ⳿ⲉⲣⲟⲕ ⲉⲕⲧⲟⲩⲃⲏⲟⲩⲧ.
23 confine thyself no longer to water-drinking; but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake, and thy frequent indispositions.
ⲕ̅ⲅ̅ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲣⲥⲉ ⲙⲱⲟⲩ ϫⲉ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲥⲉ ⲟⲩⲕⲟⲩϫⲓ ⳿ⲛⲏⲣⲡ ⲛⲁⲕ ⲉⲑⲃⲉ ⲧⲉⲕϣⲟϣⲡⲓ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲛⲉⲕϣⲱⲛⲓ ⲉⲧⲟϣ.
24 Some men’s sins are glaringly manifest, going before to judgment; and after others also they follow to detection.
ⲕ̅ⲇ̅ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ϩⲁⲛⲣⲱⲙⲓ ⲉⲣⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲛⲟⲃⲓ ⲟⲩⲟⲛϩ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲉⲩⲛⲁⲱⲥⲕ ϧⲁϫⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲉϯ⳿ⲕⲣⲓⲥⲓⲥ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ϩⲁⲛⲕⲉⲭⲱⲟⲩⲛⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲟⲛ ⲉⲣⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲟⲩ ⲛⲁⲙⲟϣⲓ ⳿ⲛⲥⲱⲟⲩ.
25 In like manner also the good works of some are previously manifest; and it is not possible that what they have besides should be concealed.
