1 Timothy 3

1 IT is a true saying, If a man seeks the office of a bishop, he desireth a laudable employment.

אכן נכונה האמרה: השואף להיות מנהיג בקהילה, שואף לתפקיד טוב.

2 A bishop then must be irreprehensible, the husband of one wife, temperate, sagacious, respectable, hospitable, well qualified for teaching;

מנהיג בקהילה צריך להיות אדם טוב וחסר דופי, בעל לאישה אחת בלבד, מושל ברוחו, צנוע, נעים־הליכות, מכניס אורחים, מורה טוב של כתבי־הקודש, אינו מפריז בשתיית יין, אינו אלים ואינו רודף בצע.

3 not addicted to wine, not using hard words or blows, not greedy of base gain; but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money;

עליו להיות טוב־לב ואדיב, להתחשב באחרים, לרדוף שלום ולא לאהוב כסף.

4 presiding over his own family with propriety, having his children under subjection with all gravity of behaviour:

עליו להנהיג היטב את משפחתו, ולחנך את ילדיו למשמעת.

5 for if a man knoweth not how to order his own family, how shall he take proper care of the church of God?

כי אם אדם אינו מסוגל להנהיג כהלכה את משפחתו, כיצד יוכל להנהיג את קהילת אלוהים?

6 Not a new convert, lest he be puffed up, and fall into the devil’s crime.

עליו להיות מאמין משיחי בעל ניסיון, שכן אם הוא מאמין צעיר ובלתי־מנוסה, הוא עלול להתגאות על שנבחר לתפקיד חשוב תוך זמן קצר בלבד, וכך ייפול בידי השטן.

7 He must also have a fair character from those who are without, that he may not fall into reproach, and into the snare of the devil.

צריך להיות לו שם טוב בין הלא־מאמינים, כדי שהשטן לא יוכל להעליל עליו עלילות ולהכשילו.

8 The deacons also in like manner must be grave, not doubletongued, not addicting themselves to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

גם על שמשי הקהילה להיות ישרים וטובים כמנהיגי הקהילה. אסור להם להרבות בשתייה ולרדוף בצע.

9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.

עליהם להיות רציניים, לאהוב את אלוהים, ולשמור במצפון נקי את סוד האמונה אשר מוסתר מהלא־מאמינים.

10 And let these also be first proved, and if found blameless, then let them enter on the deacon’s office.

עליהם להוכיח את עצמם לפני שהם נבחרים לתפקיד שמשי הקהילה. יש לבחון את אישיותם ואת יכולתם, ואם יעמדו במבחן ייבחרו לתפקיד.

11 Their wives in like manner must be grave women, not addicted to scandal, sober, faithful in all things.

נשותיהם צריכות להיות ישרות, לא מלשינות ולא רכלניות, כי אם סובלניות ונאמנות בכל מעשיהן.

12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ordering well their children and their own families.

לכל שמש בקהילה תהיה אישה אחת בלבד, ועליה לנהל היטב את משפחתה ומשק ביתה.

13 For they who discharge the office of a deacon with propriety, acquire to themselves a respectable station in the church, and great boldness in the faith which is in Jesus Christ.

כי המשרתים כהלכה ירכשו את אהדתם של אחרים, ואף ירכשו ביטחון רב באמונתם בישוע המשיח.

14 These things I write to thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:

אני אמנם מקווה לבוא אליך במהרה, אך אני כותב לך דברים אלה עתה, כדי שאם אאחר לבוא תדע אילו אנשים לבחור לתפקיד שמשי בית האלוהים. זכור: קהילת האלוהים היא ביתו של אלוהים חיים, שהוא עמוד האמת ויסודה.

15 but should I be delayed, that thou mayest know how it behoveth thee to conduct thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and the pedestal of truth.

16 And confessedly great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified by the Spirit, seen of angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

אין ספק שסוד אמונתנו גדול ביותר, אך פתרונו טמון במשיח שבא לעולם כאדם, הוכח כחסר־דופי וטהור ברוחו, נגלה אל המלאכים, התפרסם בין העמים, נתקבל באמונה על־ידי רבים ונלקח חזרה לשמים בכבוד.
