Titus 1

1 Paul, the servant of God, and apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of the elect of God, and the perfect knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,

מאת פולוס, עבדו של אלוהים ושליחו של ישוע המשיח. נשלחתי לחזק ולבנות את אמונתם של המשיחיים וללמדם את אמת אלוהים, שבה הכוח לשנות חיי אדם, כדי שיוכלו לקבל את מתנת חיי הנצח שהבטיח להם ה׳ עוד לפני בריאת העולם, ואלוהים אינו משקר. (aiōnios g166)

2 in the hope of eternal life, which God who cannot lie, promised before the eternal times, (aiōnios g166)

3 and manifested in his own seasons his word by preaching, with which I am intrusted, according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

אלוהים החליט כי עכשיו הזמן המתאים לגלות ברבים את הבשורה על אודות בנו, והוא עצמו הטיל עלי את המשימה הזאת וציווה עלי לבצעה למענו.

4 to Titus, my beloved son according to the common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Jesus Christ our Saviour.

אל טיטוס, בני האמיתי באמונה. יברך אותך אלוהים וישכין בלבך שלום ושלווה.

5 Therefore I left you in Crete, in order that you may set in order remaining things, and establish elders in every city, as I commanded you;

השארתיך באי־כרתים כדי שתעזור כמיטב יכולתך לתיקון ולחיזוק הקהילות שם, וכדי שבכל עיר תמנה זקנים אשר ימלאו את ההוראות שנתתי לך.

6 if any one is irreproachable, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not in accusation of riot or incorrigible.

אלה הן הדרישות מהזקנים – עליהם להיות: בעלי שם טוב וללא דופי (שהרי הם שליחי ה׳), בעלים לאישה אחת בלבד, שילדיהם אוהבים את אלוהים, בעלי תדמית טובה, מחונכים היטב וממושמעים, שלא אשמים בשום פשע, ענווים, לא רגזניים, שאינם מרבים בשתיית יין, לא אלימים, שונאי בצע,

7 For it behooves the bishop to be blameless, as the steward of God; not audacious, not irascible, not given to wine, not a controvertist, not fond of filthy lucre;

8 but hospitable, loving the good, prudent, righteous, holy, temperate;

מכניסי אורחים, אוהבים כל דבר טוב, נבונים, ישרי, בעלי ריסון עצמי

9 holding that which is according to the teaching of the faithful word, in order that he may be able both to exhort with healthy teaching, and to convict the opposers.

ובעלי אמונה חזקה ויציבה באמת (כדי שיוכלו לעמוד בוויכוח עם מתנגדיהם ולהוכיחם על טעותם).

10 For many are incorrigible, speaking vain things and egotistical, especially those from the circumcision,

אנשים רבים מסרבים לשמוע בקול אלוהים, במיוחד בין אלה שטוענים שהמאמינים המשיחיים חייבים לעבור ברית מילה ולקיים את כל ההלכה כדי להיוושע.

11 whose mouths it is necessary to stop; who overturn whole families, teaching those things which it does not behoove, for the sake of disgraceful gain.

עלינו לשים קץ לדבר, כי אנשים אלה הרחיקו משפחות רבות מן האמת אך ורק למען בצע כסף.

12 A certain one of them, their own prophet, said, The Cretans are all liars, evil beasts, slow stomachs.

אחד מאנשיהם, נביא מכרתים, אמר עליהם:”אנשי כרתים הם שקרנים, חיות אכזריות וגזלנים עצלנים!“

13 This testimony is true: on account of which cause convict them sharply, in order that they may be sound in the faith,

וזוהי האמת. משום כך דבר אל המאמינים בחומרה הנדרשת ועורר אותם להתחזק באמונתם.

14 not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men turning away from the truth.

הזהר אותם שלא יקשיבו לסיפורים ולאגדות הרווחות בין היהודים, ושלא ישמעו לאנשים שדוחים את האמת.

15 To the pure all things are pure: but to the corrupted and unbelieving there is nothing pure; yea, their mind and their conscience are polluted.

אדם טוב מוצא מעלות ויתרונות בכל דבר, ואילו אדם רשע, שאי־אפשר לסמוך עליו, מוצא פגמים וחסרונות בכל דבר, בגלל מחשבותיו הטמאות ותכונותיו הרעות.

16 They profess to know God, but deny him by their works, being abominable, and unbelieving, and reprobate unto every good work.

אנשים אלה טוענים שהם מאמינים באלוהים, אולם מעשיהם ואורח חייהם אינם מעידים על כך. הם כופרים, עושים מעשי תועבה ואינם מסוגלים לעשות כל מעשה טוב.
