< Romans 2 >
1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, every one judging. For in whatsoever thou art judging another, thou art condemning thyself; for thou judging art doing the same things.
You are therefore inexcusable, O man, whoever you are, that sits in judgment; for in judging another you are condemning yourself. You, the judge, are habitually practising the very same things.
2 For we know that the judgment of God according to truth is against those doing such things.
"We know that God’s judgment against those who practise such vices is in accord with the truth," you say?
3 But do you consider this, O man, judging those doing such things, and doing the same, that you shall escape the judgment of God?
Very well; and do you suppose, you who judge those that practise such vices, and are doing the very same, that you will elude the judgment of God?
4 Do you look with contempt upon the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God is leading you to repentance?
Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and long patience? Do you not know that the kindness of God is leading you to repentance?
5 But according to thy hardness and thy impenitent heart, thou art treasuring up to thyself wrath against the day of wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
In your hardness and impenitence of heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath on the Day of Wrath, when the righteous judgment of God is revealed.
6 who will give to each one according to his works:
For He will render to every man according to his works;
7 to those indeed who with patience of good work are seeking glory and honor and immortality, eternal life: (aiōnios )
eternal life to those who by patience in well-doing strive for glory and honor and immortality; (aiōnios )
8 but to those who are of self-seeking, and disobedient to the truth, but obedient to unrighteousness, there are indignation and wrath.
but anger and wrath upon those who are self-willed and disobey the truth, but obey unrighteousness.
9 Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that is working out evil, both the Jew first, and the Greek;
Anguish and calamity will be upon every soul of man who practises evil, upon the Jew first, and also upon the Gentile;
10 but glory and honor and peace to every one doing good; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
but glory and honor and peace to every man who does good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile.
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
For there is no partiality with God.
12 For so many as sinned without law will also perish without law; and so many as sinned under the law shall be judged by the law;
For all who have sinned without law will also perish without law; and all who have sinned under law will be judged by law.
13 for the hearers of the law are not righteous with God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
For it is not the hearers of law who are righteous in the eyes of God; nay, it is the doers of law who will be accounted righteous.
14 For when the Gentiles, not having the law, may by nature do the things of the law, they, not having the law, are a law unto themselves:
For when Gentiles, who have no law, obey by natural instinct the commands of the Law, they even though they have no law, are a law to themselves.
15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience witnessing, and their thoughts accusing or indeed excusing with one another,
For they show that the work of the Law is written in their hearts, while their conscience bears them witness, as their reasonings accuse, or it may be defend, them,
16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men through my gospel according to Jesus Christ.
in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.
17 But if you are denominated a Jew, and rest in the law, and boast in God,
Now if you bear the name of a Jew, and rely upon law, and boast yourself in God,
18 and know his will, and approve the things which are excellent, being taught by the law;
and know his will, and can test the things that differ; if you are instructed out of the Law,
19 and persuade yourself that you are a guide of the blind, a light of those who are in darkness, an instructor of the ignorant,
and are confident that you yourself are a darkness,
20 a teacher of the juveniles, having a form of knowledge and truth in the law;
an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of the young, because you have in the Law the form of knowledge and of the truth - well then, you who are teaching others, do you ever teach yourself?
21 therefore do not you who teach another teach yourself? do you, who preach not to steal, steal?
You who are preaching that a man should not steal, do you practise theft?
22 do you, who say not to commit adultery, commit adultery? do you, who abominate idolatry, rob temples?
You who keep saying that a man should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who hold idols in abhorrence, are you plundering their temples?
23 do you, who boast in the law, through the transgression of the law dishonor God?
You who are making your boast in the Law, do you habitually dishonor God through your transgressions of the Law?
24 For the name of God is blasphemed by you among the Gentiles, as has been written.
For the name of God is continually blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you, even as the Scripture itself says.
25 For circumcision indeed profits, if you do the law: but if you be a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
Circumcision does indeed profit, if you are obedient to the Law; but if you habitually break the Law, your circumcision is become uncircumcision.
26 Then if uncircumcision may keep the righteousness of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
So if the uncircumcised keeps the ordinance of the Law, shall not his uncircumcision be reckoned equivalent to circumcision.
27 and that which is uncircumcision by nature, perfecting the law, will judge you, who through the letter and circumcision are a transgressor of the law.
And shall not those who are physically uncircumcised, but who keep the Law, condemn you who are a breaker of the Law, although you have a written law and circumcision?
28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly; neither is circumcision that which is outwardly in the flesh.
For the real Jew is not the man who is one outwardly, and the real circumcision is not outward in the flesh;
29 But he is a Jew, who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
but the real Jew is one inwardly, and real circumcision is heart- circumcision, spiritual, not literal, praised not by men, but by God.
