< Matthew 17 >
1 And after six days Jesus takes Peter, and James, and John his brother, and carries them up into an exceedingly high mountain privately.
Six days later Jesus took with him Peter and Jamesand his brother John, and led them up a high mountain, by themselves apart.
2 And was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as the light.
Here he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light.
3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared unto them, talking with Him.
And behold! Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus.
4 And Peter responding, said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: it you will, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.
Then Peter said to Jesus. "Master, it is good that we are here! If you are willing I will make here three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
5 He still speaking, behold, a white cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am delighted; hear ye Him.
While he was yet speaking, behold! a luminous cloud overshadowed them; and a voice out of the cloud, saying. "This is my Son, my Beloved, in whom is my delight. Listen to him."
6 And the disciples, hearing, fell on their face, and feared exceedingly.
When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.
7 And Jesus came to them and touching them said, Arise, and fear not.
But Jesus came to them and touched them, saying, "Rise, have no fear!"
8 And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only.
And when they raised their eyes they saw no one save Jesus only.
9 And they coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no one, until the Son of man may rise from the dead.
While they were going down from the mountain, Jesus laid a command on them. "Speak to no man about the vision," he said, "until after the Son of man has been raised from the dead."
10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, Why then do the scribes say that it behooves Elijah to come first?
And his disciples asked him, saying, "Why then do the Scribes say that Elijah must first come?"
11 And Jesus responding said to them, Elijah indeed comes, and will restore all things:
And he answered. "Elijah is coming, and will restore all things.
12 but I say unto you, that Elijah has already come, and they recognized Him not, but did unto Him so many things as they wished; thus the Son of man is also about to suffer by them.
"Nay, I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they chose. Even so the Son of man also is about to suffer at their hands."
13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them concerning John the Baptist.
Then the disciples divined that he had been speaking to them about John, the Baptist.
14 And they having come to the multitude, the man came to Him, worshiping Him on his knees,
As they reached the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, and fell on his knees before him, saying.
15 and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son, because he is a lunatic and suffers terribly: for frequently he falls into the fire, and frequently into the water.
"Master, take pity on my son, for he is an epileptic and sore distressed. Often he falls into the fire and often into the water.
16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they were not able to heal him.
"And I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him."
17 And Jesus responding said: O, faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? bring him hither to me.
In reply Jesus said. "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I endure you? Bring him here to me!"
18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out from him, and the child was healed from that hour.
Then Jesus rebuked the evil spirit, and it came out of him; and the boy was cured from that very hour.
19 Then the disciples coming to Jesus privately, said, Wherefore were we not able to cast him out?
Thereupon Jesus’ disciples came to him and asked him privately, "Why were we not able to cast it out?"
20 and Jesus says to them, On account of your unbelief. For truly I say unto you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you.
"Because of your little faith," he answered. "In solemn truth I tell you that if you have faith the size of a mustard-seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from this place to that!’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
"But this kind is driven out by prayer alone."
22 And they sojourning in Galilee, Jesus said to them, The Son of man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.
As they continued going from place to place in Galilee, Jesus said to them. "The Son of man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men;
23 And they will kill Him; and He will rise the third day. And they were grieved exceedingly.
"and they will kill him, but on the third day he will rise again." And they were greatly grieved.
24 And they having come into Capernaum, those receiving the double drachma came to Peter, and said, Does your teacher pay the double drachma?
As they came into Capernaum the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and asked, "Does not your Teacher pay the temple tax?"
25 He says, Yes. And when he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, What seems to you, Simon? from whom do the kings of the earth receive toll or tribute? from their own sons or aliens?
"Indeed he does," answered Peter. But on Peter’s entering the house, Jesus forestalled him, saying. "How does it seem to you, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect customs or taxes-from their own people, or from aliens?"
26 And he saying from aliens, Jesus said to him, Then the sons are free.
And when he replied, "From aliens," Jesus said. "Then their people go free.
27 But in order that we may not offend them, going to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the first fish coming up; and opening its mouth, you will find a stater: having received it, give it to them for me and thee.
"Nevertheless, that we may not give offense, go to the seaside, throw in your hook; take the first fish that rises, and when you have opened its mouth, you will find a shekel in it. Take it and give it to them for us both."
