< Matthew 15 >
1 Then the scribes and Pharisees, who are from Jerusalem, come to Jesus, saying,
aparaṁ yirūśālamnagarīyāḥ katipayā adhyāpakāḥ phirūśinaśca yīśoḥ samīpamāgatya kathayāmāsuḥ,
2 Wherefore do thy disciples transgress the traditions of the elders? for they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.
tava śiṣyāḥ kimartham aprakṣālitakarai rbhakṣitvā paramparāgataṁ prācīnānāṁ vyavahāraṁ laṅvante?
3 And responding He said to them; Wherefore do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?
tato yīśuḥ pratyuvāca, yūyaṁ paramparāgatācāreṇa kuta īśvarājñāṁ laṅvadhve|
4 For God commanded saying, Honor thy father and mother: and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die with death.
īśvara ityājñāpayat, tvaṁ nijapitarau saṁmanyethāḥ, yena ca nijapitarau nindyete, sa niścitaṁ mriyeta;
5 But you say, Whosoever may say to father or mother, It is a gift, whatsoever you may be profited by me; and he shall no longer honor his father or his mother.
kintu yūyaṁ vadatha, yaḥ svajanakaṁ svajananīṁ vā vākyamidaṁ vadati, yuvāṁ matto yallabhethe, tat nyavidyata,
6 You made void the commandment of God by your tradition.
sa nijapitarau puna rna saṁmaṁsyate| itthaṁ yūyaṁ paramparāgatena sveṣāmācāreṇeśvarīyājñāṁ lumpatha|
7 Ye hypocrites, beautifully did Isaiah prophesy concerning you, saying,
re kapaṭinaḥ sarvve yiśayiyo yuṣmānadhi bhaviṣyadvacanānyetāni samyag uktavān|
8 This people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
vadanai rmanujā ete samāyānti madantikaṁ| tathādharai rmadīyañca mānaṁ kurvvanti te narāḥ|
9 But in vain they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.
kintu teṣāṁ mano matto vidūraeva tiṣṭhati| śikṣayanto vidhīn nrājñā bhajante māṁ mudhaiva te|
10 And calling the multitude to Him, He said to them, Hear and understand:
tato yīśu rlokān āhūya proktavān, yūyaṁ śrutvā budhyadhbaṁ|
11 That if which cometh into the mouth does not defile the man; but that which cometh out from the mouth, that defiles the man.
yanmukhaṁ praviśati, tat manujam amedhyaṁ na karoti, kintu yadāsyāt nirgacchati, tadeva mānuṣamamedhyī karotī|
12 Then His disciples having come to Him say, Do you not know that the Pharisees hearing your word, were offended?
tadānīṁ śiṣyā āgatya tasmai kathayāñcakruḥ, etāṁ kathāṁ śrutvā phirūśino vyarajyanta, tat kiṁ bhavatā jñāyate?
13 And He responding said, Every plant which my heavenly Father did not plant, shall be rooted up.
sa pratyavadat, mama svargasthaḥ pitā yaṁ kañcidaṅkuraṁ nāropayat, sa utpāvdyate|
14 Let them alone: the blind are leaders of the blind: if the blind may lead the blind, both will fall into the ditch.
te tiṣṭhantu, te andhamanujānām andhamārgadarśakā eva; yadyandho'ndhaṁ panthānaṁ darśayati, tarhyubhau gartte patataḥ|
15 Peter responding said to Him, Explain unto us the parable.
tadā pitarastaṁ pratyavadat, dṛṣṭāntamimamasmān bodhayatu|
16 And Jesus said, Are you indeed still without understanding?
yīśunā proktaṁ, yūyamadya yāvat kimabodhāḥ stha?
17 Do you know that everything entering into the mouth goes into the stomach, and is cast out into excrement?
kathāmimāṁ kiṁ na budhyadhbe? yadāsyaṁ previśati, tad udare patan bahirniryāti,
18 But those things going out from the mouth come forth from the heart; and these pollute the man.
kintvāsyād yanniryāti, tad antaḥkaraṇāt niryātatvāt manujamamedhyaṁ karoti|
19 For out of the heart proceed evil reasonings, murders, fornications, adulteries, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies.
yato'ntaḥkaraṇāt kucintā badhaḥ pāradārikatā veśyāgamanaṁ cairyyaṁ mithyāsākṣyam īśvaranindā caitāni sarvvāṇi niryyānti|
20 These are the things which defile the man: but to eat bread with unwashed hands does not defile the man.
etāni manuṣyamapavitrī kurvvanti kintvaprakṣālitakareṇa bhojanaṁ manujamamedhyaṁ na karoti|
21 And Jesus having come out thence, departed into the regions of Tyre and Sidon.
anantaraṁ yīśustasmāt sthānāt prasthāya sorasīdonnagarayoḥ sīmāmupatasyau|
22 And behold, a Canaanitish woman having come out from those coasts, cried unto Him saying, Have mercy on me, Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is terribly demonized.
tadā tatsīmātaḥ kācit kinānīyā yoṣid āgatya tamuccairuvāca, he prabho dāyūdaḥ santāna, mamaikā duhitāste sā bhūtagrastā satī mahākleśaṁ prāpnoti mama dayasva|
23 And He responded to her not a word; and His disciples, having come to Him, asked Him, saying, Send her away; because she cries after us.
kintu yīśustāṁ kimapi noktavān, tataḥ śiṣyā āgatya taṁ nivedayāmāsuḥ, eṣā yoṣid asmākaṁ paścād uccairāhūyāgacchati, enāṁ visṛjatu|
24 And He responding said, I am not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
tadā sa pratyavadat, isrāyelgotrasya hāritameṣān vinā kasyāpyanyasya samīpaṁ nāhaṁ preṣitosmi|
25 And having come she continued to worship Him, saying, Lord, assist me.
tataḥ sā nārīsamāgatya taṁ praṇamya jagāda, he prabho māmupakuru|
26 He responding said, It is not good to take the children's bread and cast it to the little dogs.
sa uktavān, bālakānāṁ bhakṣyamādāya sārameyebhyo dānaṁ nocitaṁ|
27 And she said, Yea, Lord: for the little dogs eat of the crumbs falling from their master's table.
tadā sā babhāṣe, he prabho, tat satyaṁ, tathāpi prabho rbhañcād yaducchiṣṭaṁ patati, tat sārameyāḥ khādanti|
28 Then Jesus responding said to her, O woman, great is thy faith; let it be done unto thee as thou dost wish. And her daughter was healed from that hour.
tato yīśuḥ pratyavadat, he yoṣit, tava viśvāso mahān tasmāt tava manobhilaṣitaṁ sidyyatu, tena tasyāḥ kanyā tasminneva daṇḍe nirāmayābhavat|
29 And Jesus having departed thence, came to the Sea of Galilee; and having gone up into the mountain, He was sitting there.
anantaraṁ yīśastasmāt sthānāt prasthāya gālīlsāgarasya sannidhimāgatya dharādharamāruhya tatropaviveśa|
30 And many multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deaf, the maimed, and many others, and laid them down at the feet of Jesus; and He healed them:
paścāt jananivaho bahūn khañcāndhamūkaśuṣkakaramānuṣān ādāya yīśoḥ samīpamāgatya taccaraṇāntike sthāpayāmāsuḥ, tataḥ sā tān nirāmayān akarot|
31 so that the multitudes were astonished, seeing the dumb speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking about, and the blind seeing: and they glorified the God of Israel.
itthaṁ mūkā vākyaṁ vadanti, śuṣkakarāḥ svāsthyamāyānti, paṅgavo gacchanti, andhā vīkṣante, iti vilokya lokā vismayaṁ manyamānā isrāyela īśvaraṁ dhanyaṁ babhāṣire|
32 And Jesus calling His disciples to Him, said, I sympathize with the multitude, because already three days abide unto me, and they have nothing which they may eat; I do not wish to send them away fasting, lest they may faint on the road.
tadānīṁ yīśuḥ svaśiṣyān āhūya gaditavān, etajjananivaheṣu mama dayā jāyate, ete dinatrayaṁ mayā sākaṁ santi, eṣāṁ bhakṣyavastu ca kañcidapi nāsti, tasmādahametānakṛtāhārān na visrakṣyāmi, tathātve vartmamadhye klāmyeṣuḥ|
33 And His disciples say to Him, Whence is there to us so much bread in the wilderness, as to feed so great a multitude?
tadā śiṣyā ūcuḥ, etasmin prāntaramadhya etāvato martyān tarpayituṁ vayaṁ kutra pūpān prāpsyāmaḥ?
34 And Jesus says to them; How much bread have ye? And they said, Seven loaves and a few fishes.
yīśurapṛcchat, yuṣmākaṁ nikaṭe kati pūpā āsate? ta ūcuḥ, saptapūpā alpāḥ kṣudramīnāśca santi|
35 He having commanded the multitudes to sit down upon the ground,
tadānīṁ sa lokanivahaṁ bhūmāvupaveṣṭum ādiśya
36 He took the seven loaves and the fishes; having given thanks, He broke them, and gave to His disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
tān saptapūpān mīnāṁśca gṛhlan īśvarīyaguṇān anūdya bhaṁktvā śiṣyebhyo dadau, śiṣyā lokebhyo daduḥ|
37 And they all ate, and were filled: and they took up the residue of fragments, seven baskets full.
tataḥ sarvve bhuktvā tṛptavantaḥ; tadavaśiṣṭabhakṣyeṇa saptaḍalakān paripūryya saṁjagṛhuḥ|
38 And those eating were about tour thousand men, besides women and children.
te bhoktāro yoṣito bālakāṁśca vihāya prāyeṇa catuḥsahasrāṇi puruṣā āsan|
39 And having sent away the multitudes, He went into a ship and came into the coasts of Magdala.
tataḥ paraṁ sa jananivahaṁ visṛjya tarimāruhya magdalāpradeśaṁ gatavān|
