< Mark 2 >
1 And again He having come into Capernaum during those days; and it was heard that He was in the house.
Some days later, when Jesus came back to Capernaum, the news spread that he was in a house there;
2 And immediately many were assembled together, so that there was no room, even at the door; and He was speaking the word to them.
and so many people collected together, that after a while there was no room for them even around the door; and he began to tell them his message.
3 And they come to Him, carrying a paralytic, borne by four.
Some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, who was being carried by four of them.
4 And not being able to come near Him on account of the crowd, they opened the roof where He was: and having lifted it up, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying.
They were unable to get him near to Jesus, because of the crowd, so they removed the roof above Jesus, and, when they had made an opening, they let down the mat on which the paralyzed man was lying.
5 And Jesus seeing their faith says to the paralytic, Child, thy sins are forgiven thee.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Child, your sins are forgiven.”
6 And certain ones of the scribes were sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
But some of the teachers of the Law who were sitting there were debating in their minds,
7 Why does He speak blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins, except the one God?
“Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins except God?”
8 And Jesus immediately knowing in His spirit that they are thus reasoning among themselves, said to them, Why do you thus reason in your hearts?
Jesus, at once intuitively aware that they were debating with themselves in this way, said to them, “Why are you debating in your minds about this?
9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, Thy sins are forgiven; or to say, Arise, and take thy bed, and walk about?
Which is easier? – to say to the paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven’? Or to say ‘Get up, and take up your mat, and walk’?
10 But in order that you may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins
But so you may know that the Son of Man has power to forgive sins on earth” – here he said to the paralyzed man –
11 (He says to the paralytic), I say unto thee, Arise, take thy bed, and go into thy house.
“To you I say, Get up, take up your mat, and return to your home.”
12 And he arose immediately, and having taken the bed, went out before them all. So that all were astonished, and glorified God, saying, Never have we seen it after this sort.
The man got up, and immediately took up his mat, and went out before them all; at which they were amazed, and, as they praised God, they said, “We have never seen anything like this!”
13 And He came out again by the sea; and the whole multitude came to Him, and He was teaching them.
Jesus went out again to the sea; and all the people came to him, and he taught them.
14 And passing along, he saw Levi, the son of Alpheus sitting at the toll, and says to him, Follow me. And rising up, he followed Him.
As he went along, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting in the tax office, and said to him, “Follow me.” Levi got up and followed him.
15 And it came to pass, while He was sitting at the table in his house, and many publicans and sinners were sitting along with Jesus and his disciples: for they were many, and they followed Him.
Later on he was in his house having dinner, and a number of tax collectors and outcasts took their places at the table with Jesus and his disciples; for many of them were following him.
16 And the scribes and Pharisees, seeing Him eating with the publicans and sinners, were saying to His disciples, Why does He eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
When the teachers of the Law belonging to the party of the Pharisees saw that he was eating in the company of such people, they said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with the tax collectors and outcasts?”
17 Jesus hearing, says to them, They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a doctor, but those who are ill. I did not come to call the religious, but the outcast.”
18 The disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting. And they come and say to Him; Wherefore do the disciples of John and the Pharisees fast, and thy disciples do not fast?
Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and people came and asked Jesus, “Why is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, while yours do not?”
19 And Jesus said to them, Whether are the sons of the bride-chamber able to fast while the bridegroom is with them? So long a time as they have with them the bridegroom they are not able to fast.
Jesus answered, “Can the groom’s friends fast, while the groom is with them? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast.
20 But the days will come, when the bridegroom must be taken from them, and then they will fast in that day.
But the days will come, when the groom will be taken away from them, and they will fast then – when that day comes.”
21 No one putteth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: lest the new take its fullness from the old, and the rent is made worse.
“No one ever sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; if they do, the patch tears away from it – the new from the old – and a worse tear is made.
22 No one puts new wine in old bottles: lest the new wine shall break the bottles, and the wine is poured out, and the bottles shall perish: but the new wine is put in new bottles.
And no one ever puts new wine into old wine-skins; if they do, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are lost. But new wine is put into fresh skins.”
23 And it came to pass, that He was traveling through the corn-fields on the Sabbath-day; and His disciples began to make the journey plucking the ears.
One Sabbath, as Jesus was walking through the cornfields, his disciples began to pick the ears of wheat as they went along.
24 And the Pharisees continued to say to Him, Behold what they are doing on the Sabbath, which is not lawful.
“Look!” the Pharisees said to him, “why are they doing what is not allowed on the Sabbath?”
25 And He said to them, Have ye not read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry, and those with him?
“Have you never read,” answered Jesus, “what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and his companions –
26 How he entered into the house of God, in the days of Abiathar, the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priest, and he gave it to those being with him?
how he went into the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which only the priests are allowed to eat, and gave some to his comrades as well?”
27 And He said to them, The Sabbath was made for the sake of man, and not man for the sake of the Sabbath.
Then Jesus added, “The Sabbath was made for people, and not people for the Sabbath;
28 So the Son of man is also Lord of the Sabbath.
so the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
