< Luke 4 >
1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Ghost, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, tempted by the devil forty days.
tataḥ paraṁ yīśuḥ pavitreṇātmanā pūrṇaḥ san yarddananadyāḥ parāvṛtyātmanā prāntaraṁ nītaḥ san catvāriṁśaddināni yāvat śaitānā parīkṣito'bhūt,
2 And He ate nothing during those days; and they having been completed, He afterward hungered.
kiñca tāni sarvvadināni bhojanaṁ vinā sthitatvāt kāle pūrṇe sa kṣudhitavān|
3 And the devil said to Him, If thou art the Son of God, speak to this stone, in order that it may become bread.
tataḥ śaitānāgatya tamavadat tvaṁ cedīśvarasya putrastarhi prastarānetān ājñayā pūpān kuru|
4 And Jesus responded to him, saying; It has been written, That man shall not live upon bread alone, but upon every word of God.
tadā yīśuruvāca, lipirīdṛśī vidyate manujaḥ kevalena pūpena na jīvati kintvīśvarasya sarvvābhirājñābhi rjīvati|
5 And the devil leading Him up, he showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
tadā śaitān tamuccaṁ parvvataṁ nītvā nimiṣaikamadhye jagataḥ sarvvarājyāni darśitavān|
6 And the devil said to Him, I will give all the authority and glories of these to thee: because it has been given unto me: and I give it to whom I may wish;
paścāt tamavādīt sarvvam etad vibhavaṁ pratāpañca tubhyaṁ dāsyāmi tan mayi samarpitamāste yaṁ prati mamecchā jāyate tasmai dātuṁ śaknomi,
7 then if thou mayest worship before me all shall belong to thee.
tvaṁ cenmāṁ bhajase tarhi sarvvametat tavaiva bhaviṣyati|
8 And Jesus responding said to him; It has been written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and Him only shalt thou serve.
tadā yīśustaṁ pratyuktavān dūrī bhava śaitān lipirāste, nijaṁ prabhuṁ parameśvaraṁ bhajasva kevalaṁ tameva sevasva ca|
9 And he led Him into Jerusalem, and placed Him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, If thou art the Son of God cast thyself down from thence;
atha śaitān taṁ yirūśālamaṁ nītvā mandirasya cūḍāyā upari samupaveśya jagāda tvaṁ cedīśvarasya putrastarhi sthānādito lamphitvādhaḥ
10 for it has been written, That He will give His angels charge concerning thee, in order to guard thee,
pata yato lipirāste, ājñāpayiṣyati svīyān dūtān sa parameśvaraḥ|
11 and they will bear thee upon their hands, lest at any time thou mayest dash thy foot against a stone.
rakṣituṁ sarvvamārge tvāṁ tena tvaccaraṇe yathā| na laget prastarāghātastvāṁ dhariṣyanti te tathā|
12 And Jesus responding said to him; That it has been said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
tadā yīśunā pratyuktam idamapyuktamasti tvaṁ svaprabhuṁ pareśaṁ mā parīkṣasva|
13 And the devil having perfected every temptation, departed from Him for a season.
paścāt śaitān sarvvaparīkṣāṁ samāpya kṣaṇāttaṁ tyaktvā yayau|
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the spirit into Galilee. And the fame concerning Him went throughout the whole country.
tadā yīśurātmaprabhāvāt punargālīlpradeśaṁ gatastadā tatsukhyātiścaturdiśaṁ vyānaśe|
15 And He was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
sa teṣāṁ bhajanagṛheṣu upadiśya sarvvaiḥ praśaṁsito babhūva|
16 And He came into Nazareth, where He was brought up: and according to the custom to Him, He came into the synagogue on the Sabbath-day, and stood up to read.
atha sa svapālanasthānaṁ nāsaratpurametya viśrāmavāre svācārād bhajanagehaṁ praviśya paṭhitumuttasthau|
17 And the Book of Isaiah the prophet was given to Him; and having opened the book, He found the place where it was written,
tato yiśayiyabhaviṣyadvādinaḥ pustake tasya karadatte sati sa tat pustakaṁ vistāryya yatra vakṣyamāṇāni vacanāni santi tat sthānaṁ prāpya papāṭha|
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor: hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and sight to the blind, and to set at liberty them that are bruised,
ātmā tu parameśasya madīyopari vidyate| daridreṣu susaṁvādaṁ vaktuṁ māṁ sobhiṣiktavān| bhagnāntaḥ karaṇāllokān susvasthān karttumeva ca| bandīkṛteṣu lokeṣu mukte rghoṣayituṁ vacaḥ| netrāṇi dātumandhebhyastrātuṁ baddhajanānapi|
19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
pareśānugrahe kālaṁ pracārayitumeva ca| sarvvaitatkaraṇārthāya māmeva prahiṇoti saḥ||
20 And having closed the book, and giving it back to the officer, He sat down: and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on Him.
tataḥ pustakaṁ badvvā paricārakasya haste samarpya cāsane samupaviṣṭaḥ, tato bhajanagṛhe yāvanto lokā āsan te sarvve'nanyadṛṣṭyā taṁ vilulokire|
21 And He began to say to them; This day has this Scripture been fulfilled in your ears.
anantaram adyaitāni sarvvāṇi likhitavacanāni yuṣmākaṁ madhye siddhāni sa imāṁ kathāṁ tebhyaḥ kathayitumārebhe|
22 And they all continued to witness to Him, and wonder at the words of grace proceeding out from His mouth: and say, Is not this the son of Joseph?
tataḥ sarvve tasmin anvarajyanta, kiñca tasya mukhānnirgatābhiranugrahasya kathābhiścamatkṛtya kathayāmāsuḥ kimayaṁ yūṣaphaḥ putro na?
23 And He said to them, You truly speak to me this parable, Physician, heal thyself: so many things as we heard having been done in Capernaum, do also here in thy own country.
tadā so'vādīd he cikitsaka svameva svasthaṁ kuru kapharnāhūmi yadyat kṛtavān tadaśrauṣma tāḥ sarvāḥ kriyā atra svadeśe kuru kathāmetāṁ yūyamevāvaśyaṁ māṁ vadiṣyatha|
24 And He said, Truly I say unto you, that no prophet is acceptable in his own country.
punaḥ sovādīd yuṣmānahaṁ yathārthaṁ vadāmi, kopi bhaviṣyadvādī svadeśe satkāraṁ na prāpnoti|
25 And in truth I say unto you, There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah. When the heaven was shut up three years and six months, how the famine was great over all the land;
aparañca yathārthaṁ vacmi, eliyasya jīvanakāle yadā sārddhatritayavarṣāṇi yāvat jaladapratibandhāt sarvvasmin deśe mahādurbhikṣam ajaniṣṭa tadānīm isrāyelo deśasya madhye bahvyo vidhavā āsan,
26 and Elijah was sent to none of them, except to a widow woman in Sarepta of Sidon.
kintu sīdonpradeśīyasāriphatpuranivāsinīm ekāṁ vidhavāṁ vinā kasyāścidapi samīpe eliyaḥ prerito nābhūt|
27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha; and none of them were cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.
aparañca ilīśāyabhaviṣyadvādividyamānatākāle isrāyeldeśe bahavaḥ kuṣṭhina āsan kintu surīyadeśīyaṁ nāmānkuṣṭhinaṁ vinā kopyanyaḥ pariṣkṛto nābhūt|
28 And all in the synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with wrath.
imāṁ kathāṁ śrutvā bhajanagehasthitā lokāḥ sakrodham utthāya
29 And rising up, they cast Him out of the city, and were leading Him to the brink of the mountain on which their city was built, to hurl Him down;
nagarāttaṁ bahiṣkṛtya yasya śikhariṇa upari teṣāṁ nagaraṁ sthāpitamāste tasmānnikṣeptuṁ tasya śikharaṁ taṁ ninyuḥ
30 and He having passed through the midst of them went away.
kintu sa teṣāṁ madhyādapasṛtya sthānāntaraṁ jagāma|
31 And He came down into Capernaum, a city of Galilee, And He was teaching them on the Sabbath.
tataḥ paraṁ yīśurgālīlpradeśīyakapharnāhūmnagara upasthāya viśrāmavāre lokānupadeṣṭum ārabdhavān|
32 And they were astonished at His teaching; because His word was with authority.
tadupadeśāt sarvve camaccakru ryatastasya kathā gurutarā āsan|
33 And in the synagogue there was a man having a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried with a great voice,
tadānīṁ tadbhajanagehasthito'medhyabhūtagrasta eko jana uccaiḥ kathayāmāsa,
34 saying, Let me alone; what is there to us and to thee, O Jesus the Nazarene? Hast thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
he nāsaratīyayīśo'smān tyaja, tvayā sahāsmākaṁ kaḥ sambandhaḥ? kimasmān vināśayitumāyāsi? tvamīśvarasya pavitro jana etadahaṁ jānāmi|
35 Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent and come out from him; and the demon having thrown him down in the midst came out from him, not having injured him.
tadā yīśustaṁ tarjayitvāvadat maunī bhava ito bahirbhava; tataḥ somedhyabhūtastaṁ madhyasthāne pātayitvā kiñcidapyahiṁsitvā tasmād bahirgatavān|
36 And fear came upon them all, and they were talking together to one another, saying, What word is this? because with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.
tataḥ sarvve lokāścamatkṛtya parasparaṁ vaktumārebhire koyaṁ camatkāraḥ| eṣa prabhāveṇa parākrameṇa cāmedhyabhūtān ājñāpayati tenaiva te bahirgacchanti|
37 And the report concerning Him was going out into every place in the surrounding country,
anantaraṁ caturdiksthadeśān tasya sukhyātirvyāpnot|
38 Having arisen up from the synagogue, He came into the house of Simon. And the mother-in-law of Simon was afflicted with a great fever; and they asked Him concerning her.
tadanantaraṁ sa bhajanagehād bahirāgatya śimono niveśanaṁ praviveśa tadā tasya śvaśrūrjvareṇātyantaṁ pīḍitāsīt śiṣyāstadarthaṁ tasmin vinayaṁ cakruḥ|
39 And He, standing over her, rebuked the fever; and dismissed it; and immediately, having stood up, she continued to minister unto them.
tataḥ sa tasyāḥ samīpe sthitvā jvaraṁ tarjayāmāsa tenaiva tāṁ jvaro'tyākṣīt tataḥ sā tatkṣaṇam utthāya tān siṣeve|
40 And the sun having gone down, all so many as had people afflicted with various diseases continued to lead them to Him; and He having put His hands on each one of them, healed them.
atha sūryyāstakāle sveṣāṁ ye ye janā nānārogaiḥ pīḍitā āsan lokāstān yīśoḥ samīpam āninyuḥ, tadā sa ekaikasya gātre karamarpayitvā tānarogān cakāra|
41 And the demons continued to go out from many, crying, and saying, Thou art the Christ, the Son of God. And rebuking them, He did not suffer them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ.
tato bhūtā bahubhyo nirgatya cītśabdaṁ kṛtvā ca babhāṣire tvamīśvarasya putro'bhiṣiktatrātā; kintu sobhiṣiktatrāteti te vividuretasmāt kāraṇāt tān tarjayitvā tadvaktuṁ niṣiṣedha|
42 And it being day, having come out, He departed into a desert place: and the multitudes continued to seek Him; and they came unto Him, and they constrained Him not to depart from them.
aparañca prabhāte sati sa vijanasthānaṁ pratasthe paścāt janāstamanvicchantastannikaṭaṁ gatvā sthānāntaragamanārthaṁ tamanvarundhan|
43 And He said to them, That, it behooveth me to preach the gospel of the kingdom of God to many other cities: because unto this I have been sent.
kintu sa tān jagāda, īśvarīyarājyasya susaṁvādaṁ pracārayitum anyāni purāṇyapi mayā yātavyāni yatastadarthameva preritohaṁ|
44 And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
atha gālīlo bhajanageheṣu sa upadideśa|
