< John 1 >
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God;
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
this One was in the beginning with God;
3 All things were made by Him, and without Him nothing was made, that has been made.
all things happened through Him, and without Him not even one thing happened that has happened.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of the men.
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men,
5 And the light shineth in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.
and the light shined in the darkness, and the darkness did not perceive it.
6 There was a man having been sent from God, whose name was John;
There came a man—having been sent from God—whose name [is] John,
7 The same came for a witness, that he might bear witness concerning the light, in order that all through him might believe.
this one came for testimony, that he might testify about the Light, that all might believe through him;
8 He was not the light, but came that he might bear witness concerning the light.
that one was not the Light, but—that he might testify about the Light.
9 That was the true light, which lighteth every man, coming into the world.
He was the true Light, which enlightens every man, coming into the world;
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him:
11 He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.
He came to [His] own, and [His] own did not receive Him;
12 But so many as received Him, to them gave He the right to become the children of God, to those believing on His name:
but as many as received Him, to them He gave authority to become sons of God—to those believing in His Name,
13 who were born not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
who were begotten, not of blood, nor of will of flesh, nor of will of man, but of God.
14 The Word was made flesh, and tented among us (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten with the Father), full of grace and truth.
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of [the] only begotten of [the] Father, full of grace and truth.
15 John beareth witness concerning Him, and cried out saying; This is He of whom I spoke, He that cometh after me has been before me:
John testifies concerning Him, and has cried, saying, “This was He of whom I said, He who is coming after me has come before me, for He was before me.”
16 because He was my Creator. And of His fullness we all received grace upon grace.
And we all received out of His fullness, and grace for grace;
17 Because the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
for the Law was given through Moses, the grace and the truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God; the only begotten Son, the one being in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared him.
No one has ever seen God; the only begotten God who is on the bosom of the Father—He has expounded [Him].
19 This is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, that they might ask him,
And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites out of Jerusalem, that they might question him, “Who are you?”
20 Who art thou? and he confessed and denied not, and confessed that, I am not the Christ.
And he confessed and did not deny, and confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
21 They asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he says, I am not. Art thou that prophet?
And they questioned him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he says, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
22 And he responded, No. Then they said to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those having sent us. What do you say concerning yourself?
Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those sending us? What do you say concerning yourself?”
23 I am the voice of one roaring in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord as Isaiah the prophet said.
He said, “I [am] a voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the LORD, as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24 And those having been sent were of the Pharisees.
And those sent were of the Pharisees,
25 And they asked him, and said to him, Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor that prophet?
and they questioned him and said to him, “Why, then, do you immerse, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”
26 John responded to them, saying, I baptize with water: There standeth One in your midst whom you do not know,
John answered them, saying, “I immerse in water, but in the midst of you has stood He whom you have not known, it is this One who is coming after me, who has been before me,
27 the One coming after me, of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the latchet of His sandal.
of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the strap of His sandal.”
28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
These things came to pass in Bethabara, beyond the Jordan, where John was immersing.
29 On the following day he sees Jesus coming to him, and says, Behold the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world.
On the next day John sees Jesus coming to him and says, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who is taking away the sin of the world;
30 This is He concerning whom I spoke, A man cometh after me who has been before me: because he was my Creator.
this is He concerning whom I said, After me comes a Man who has come before me, because He was before me:
31 And I did not know Him, but in order that He may be made manifest to Israel, on this account I came baptizing with water.
and I did not know Him, but that He might be revealed to Israel, because of this I came immersing in water.”
32 And John testified saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and remained on Him.
And John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit coming down out of Heaven as a dove, and [that] One remained on Him;
33 And I did not know Him, but the One having sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, On whom you may see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, He is the one baptizing with the Holy Ghost.
and I did not know Him, but He who sent me to immerse in water, He said to me, On whomsoever you may see the Spirit coming down, and remaining on Him, this is He who is immersing in the Holy Spirit;
34 And I have seen, and testified that He is the Son of God.
and I have seen, and have testified, that this is the Son of God.”
35 On the following day John again stood, and two of his disciples,
On the next day, again, John was standing, and two of his disciples,
36 and looking upon Jesus walking about, says, Behold, the Lamb of God.
and having looked on Jesus walking, he says, “Behold, the Lamb of God”;
37 And the two disciples heard him speaking and followed Jesus.
and the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus.
38 Jesus turning and seeing them following, says to them, What are you seeking? and they said to Him, Doctor, (which is said, being interpreted, Teacher), where dwellest thou?
And Jesus having turned, and having beheld them following, says to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is, being interpreted, Teacher), “where do You remain?”
39 He says to them; Come and see. Then they came and saw where He dwelleth, and they abode with Him that day: it was about the tenth hour.
He says to them, “Come and see”; they came and saw where He remains, and they remained with Him that day and the hour was about the tenth.
40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two hearing from John, and follows Him;
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard from John, and followed Him;
41 he first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, We have found Messiah, which is being interpreted, Christ.
this one first finds his own brother Simon and says to him, “We have found the Messiah,” (which is, being interpreted, Anointed One),
42 He led him to Jesus. Jesus looking upon him said; Thou art Simon the Son of Jonah, thou shalt be called Cephas (which is interpreted, Peter).
and he brought him to Jesus: and having looked on him, Jesus says, “You are Simon, the son of Jonas, you will be called Cephas,” (which is interpreted, A rock).
43 On the following day he wished to depart into Galilee, and he finds Philip. And Jesus says to him; Follow me.
On the next day He willed to go forth to Galilee, and He finds Philip and says to him, “Follow Me.”
44 Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.
And Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter;
45 Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, We have found Him, of whom Moses and the prophets, in the law, did write, Jesus the son of Joseph, who is from Nazareth.
Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, “Him of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and the Prophets, we have found, Jesus the Son of Joseph, who [is] from Nazareth!”
46 Nathanael said to him, Is any good thing able to come out of Nazareth? Philip says to him, Come and see.
And Nathanael said to him, “Is any good thing able to be out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and says concerning him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and He says concerning him, “Behold, truly an Israelite, in whom is no guile”;
48 Nathanael says to Him, Whence do you know me? Jesus responded and said to him, Before Philip called you, I saw you, being under the fig-tree.
Nathanael says to Him, “From where do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip’s calling you, being under the fig tree, I saw you.”
49 Nathanael responded, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, the King of Israel.
Nathanael answered and says to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God, You are the King of Israel.”
50 Jesus responded and said to him, Because I said to thee, that I saw thee under the fig-tree, dost thou believe? thou shalt see greater things than these.
Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, you believe; you will see greater things than these”;
51 And He says to him, Truly, truly, I say unto you, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
and He says to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, from now on you will see Heaven opened, and the messengers of God going up and coming down on the Son of Man.”
