< John 16 >

1 I have spoken these things to you, that you may not be offended.
“I have spoken to you in this way so that you may not falter.
2 They will put you out of the synagogues: but the hour is coming, that every one killing you may think he is offering service to God.
They will expel you from their synagogues; indeed the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think that they are making an offering to God.
3 And they will do these things, because they did not know the Father, nor me.
They will do this, because they have not learned to know the Father, or even me.
4 But I have spoken these things to you, that when the hour may come, you may remember them, that I did say them to you. But I said not these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.
But I have spoken to you of these things so that, when the time for them comes, you may remember that I told you about them myself.
5 But now I go to Him that sent me; and no one of you asks me, Whither goest thou?
I did not tell you all this at first, because I was with you. But now I am to return to him who sent me; and yet not one of you asks me – ‘Where are you going?’
6 But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
Although your hearts are full of sorrow at all that I have been saying to you.
7 But now I tell you the truth; it is profitable to you that I may go away. For if I go not away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I may go, I will send Him to you.
Yet I am only telling you the truth; it is for your good that I should go away. For otherwise the helper will never come to you, but, if I leave you, I will send him to you.
8 And having come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment.
And he, when he comes, will bring conviction to the world as to sin, and as to righteousness, and as to judgment;
9 Concerning sin indeed, because they do not believe on me; and concerning righteousness;
as to sin, for people do not believe in me;
10 because I go to the Father, and you see me no more;
as to righteousness, for I am going to the Father, and you will see me no longer;
11 and concerning judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.
as to judgment, for the Spirit that is ruling this world has been condemned.
12 I have many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them now.
I have still much to say to you, but you cannot bear it now.
13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, may come, He will guide you in all truth: for He will not speak from Himself; but so many things as He hears, He will speak: and will proclaim to you the things which are coming.
Yet when he – The Spirit of truth – comes, he will guide you into all truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but he will speak of all that he hears; and he will tell you of the things that are to come.
14 He will glorify me: because He will receive from mine, and proclaim them unto you.
He will honor me; because he will take of what is mine, and will tell it to you.
15 And all things whatsoever the Father has are mine: therefore I said, that He takes from mine, and will proclaim them to you.
Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said that he takes of what is mine, and will tell it to you.
16 A little while, and ye see me no more; again a little while, and ye shall see me.
In a little while you will no longer see me; and then in a little while you will see me indeed.”
17 Then some of His disciples were saying to one another, What is this which He speaks to us, A little while, and you see me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me? and that I go to the Father?
At this some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying to us ‘In a little while you will not see me, and then in a little while you will see me indeed’; and by saying ‘Because I am going to the Father’?
18 Then they were speaking, What is this, Little while, of which He speaks? and we know not what He is talking about.
What does he mean by ‘In a little while’?” they said. “We do not know what he is speaking about.”
19 Jesus knew that they wished to ask Him, and said to them, You are seeking with one another concerning this, because I said, A little while, and you see me no more, and again a little while, and you shall see me?
Jesus saw that they were wanting to ask him a question, and said, “Are you trying to find out from one another what I meant by saying ‘In a little while you will not see me; and then in a little while you will see me indeed’?
20 Truly, truly, I say unto you, that you will weep and mourn, and the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.
In truth I tell you that you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will suffer pain, but your pain will turn to joy.
21 When a woman may bring forth she has sorrow, because her hour has come: but when the little child may be born, she remembers her suffering no more, for the joy that a man has been born into the world.
A woman in labor is in pain because her time has come; but no sooner is the child born, than she forgets her trouble in her joy that a child has been born into the world.
22 Therefore you indeed also now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one taketh your joy from you.
You, in the same way, are sorry now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will rob you of your joy.
23 And in that day you will ask of me nothing. Truly, truly, I say unto you, Whatsoever you may ask the Father, He will give it to you in my name.
And at that time you will not ask me anything; in truth I tell you, if you ask the Father for anything, he will grant it to you in my name.
24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name: ask, and you shall receive, in order that your joy may be full.
So far you have not asked for anything, in my name; ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
25 I have spoken these things unto you in parables; the hour comes, when I shall no longer speak to you in parables, but openly will I proclaim to you concerning the Father.
I have spoken to you of all this in figures; a time is coming, however, when I will not speak any longer to you in figures, but will tell you about the Father plainly.
26 In that clay you shall ask in my name: and I do not say, that I will ask the Father for you;
You will ask, at that time, in my name; and I do not say that I will intercede with the Father for you;
27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved me as a friend, and you have believed that I came out from God.
for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came from the Father.
28 I came out from the Father, and have come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
I came out from the Father, and have come into the world; and now I am to leave the world, and go to the Father.”
29 His disciples say; Behold, now you are talking openly, and speaking no parable.
“At last,” exclaimed the disciples, “you are using plain words and not speaking in figures at all.
30 Now we know that you know all things, and have no need that any one may ask you: in this we believe that you came out from God.
Now we are sure that you know everything, and need not wait for anyone to question you. This makes us believe that you did come from God.”
31 Jesus responded to them, Do you now believe?
“Do you believe that already?” Jesus answered.
32 Behold, the hour cometh, and is already come, that you must be scattered abroad, each one to his own place, and leave me alone: I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
“Listen! A time is coming – indeed it has already come – when you are to be scattered, each going his own way, and to leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 I have spoken these things to you, in order that you may have peace in me. In the world you have tribulation: but take courage; I have conquered the world.
I have spoken to you in this way, so that in me you may find peace. In the world you will find trouble; yet, take courage! I have conquered the world.”
