< Acts 17 >
1 And having traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came into Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
cum autem perambulassent Amphipolim et Apolloniam venerunt Thessalonicam ubi erat synagoga Iudaeorum
2 And according to custom to Paul, he came in unto them, and for three Sabbaths he expounded unto them from the scriptures,
secundum consuetudinem autem Paulus introivit ad eos et per sabbata tria disserebat eis de scripturis
3 opening and proving, that it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead, and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is the Christ.
adaperiens et insinuans quia Christum oportuit pati et resurgere a mortuis et quia hic est Christus Iesus quem ego adnuntio vobis
4 And certain ones of them were persuaded, and identified themselves with Paul and Silas, and of the pious Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
et quidam ex eis crediderunt et adiuncti sunt Paulo et Silae et de colentibus gentilibusque multitudo magna et mulieres nobiles non paucae
5 But the Jews giving away to jealousy, and receiving to themselves certain wicked men of those around the forum, and raising a mob, continued to put the city in an uproar; and assaulting the house of Jason, they were seeking to lead them out to the people:
zelantes autem Iudaei adsumentesque de vulgo viros quosdam malos et turba facta concitaverunt civitatem et adsistentes domui Iasonis quaerebant eos producere in populum
6 but not finding them, they dragged Jason and certain brethren to the rulers of the city, roaring that, These who have turned the world upside down are also come hither;
et cum non invenissent eos trahebant Iasonem et quosdam fratres ad principes civitatis clamantes quoniam hii qui orbem concitant et huc venerunt
7 whom Jason has received: and all these are doing contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another King, Jesus.
quos suscepit Iason et hii omnes contra decreta Caesaris faciunt regem alium dicentes esse Iesum
8 And they excited the rabble and the city rulers hearing these things;
concitaverunt autem plebem et principes civitatis audientes haec
9 and having received satisfaction from Jason and the others they sent them away.
et accepto satis ab Iasone et a ceteris dimiserunt eos
10 But the brethren immediately sent away both Paul and Silas to Berea by night, who coming into the synagogue of the Jews departed;
fratres vero confestim per noctem dimiserunt Paulum et Silam in Beroeam qui cum advenissent in synagogam Iudaeorum introierunt
11 but these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, who received the word with all enthusiasm, searching the scriptures daily, if these things are so.
hii autem erant nobiliores eorum qui sunt Thessalonicae qui susceperunt verbum cum omni aviditate cotidie scrutantes scripturas si haec ita se haberent
12 Then indeed many of them believed, and of the noble Greek women and men, not a few;
et multi quidem crediderunt ex eis et gentilium mulierum honestarum et viri non pauci
13 but when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that the word of God was preached by Paul in Berea, they came thither also, agitating and stirring up the rabbles.
cum autem cognovissent in Thessalonica Iudaei quia et Beroeae praedicatum est a Paulo verbum Dei venerunt et illuc commoventes et turbantes multitudinem
14 But immediately at that time the brethren sent away Paul to travel even to the sea: and Silas and Timothy remained there.
statimque tunc Paulum dimiserunt fratres ut iret usque ad mare Silas autem et Timotheus remanserunt ibi
15 But having embarked Paul, they led him even to Athens: and receiving commandment to Silas and Timothy that they should come to him as quickly as possible, they departed from him.
qui autem deducebant Paulum perduxerunt usque Athenas et accepto mandato ab eo ad Silam et Timotheum ut quam celeriter venirent ad illum profecti sunt
16 But Paul waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, seeing the city devoted to idolatry.
Paulus autem cum Athenis eos expectaret incitabatur spiritus eius in ipso videns idolatriae deditam civitatem
17 Then indeed he spoke to the Jews, and to the worshipers in the synagogue, and to those incidentally meeting him every day in the forum.
disputabat igitur in synagoga cum Iudaeis et colentibus et in foro per omnes dies ad eos qui aderant
18 And certain ones of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers interviewed him, and some continued to say, What would this babbler wish to say? and others said, He seems to be the propagator of strange divinities: because he was preaching the gospel of Jesus, and the resurrection.
quidam autem epicurei et stoici philosophi disserebant cum eo et quidam dicebant quid vult seminiverbius hic dicere alii vero novorum daemoniorum videtur adnuntiator esse quia Iesum et resurrectionem adnuntiabat eis
19 And taking him, they led him to the Areopagus, saying; Are we able to know what is this new teaching, spoken by thee?
et adprehensum eum ad Ariopagum duxerunt dicentes possumus scire quae est haec nova quae a te dicitur doctrina
20 For you bring certain strange things to our hearing: therefore we desire to know what these things wish to be.
nova enim quaedam infers auribus nostris volumus ergo scire quidnam velint haec esse
21 But all the Athenians and itinerant strangers were accustomed to devote their time to nothing else, than to tell something new, or to hear something.
Athenienses autem omnes et advenae hospites ad nihil aliud vacabant nisi aut dicere aut audire aliquid novi
22 And Paul standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said, Athenian men, I perceive that in all things you are very religious.
stans autem Paulus in medio Ariopagi ait viri athenienses per omnia quasi superstitiosiores vos video
23 For going through, and seeing your devotions, I also found an altar on which it was superscribed, To THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore I now preach unto you Him whom you are ignorantly worshiping.
praeteriens enim et videns simulacra vestra inveni et aram in qua scriptum erat ignoto deo quod ergo ignorantes colitis hoc ego adnuntio vobis
24 God having made the world and all things which are in it, being himself Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands;
Deus qui fecit mundum et omnia quae in eo sunt hic caeli et terrae cum sit Dominus non in manufactis templis inhabitat
25 neither is he worshiped by human hands, as if needing something, Himself having given life, and breath, and all things to all;
nec manibus humanis colitur indigens aliquo cum ipse det omnibus vitam et inspirationem et omnia
26 and of (one) man he created every nation of men to dwell upon the whole face of the earth, having determined their predestinated times, and the boundaries of their habitation;
fecitque ex uno omne genus hominum inhabitare super universam faciem terrae definiens statuta tempora et terminos habitationis eorum
27 that they should seek God, if perhaps indeed they might feel after him, and find him, though not being far from each one of you.
quaerere Deum si forte adtractent eum aut inveniant quamvis non longe sit ab unoquoque nostrum
28 For in him we live and move and have our being, as indeed certain ones of your own poets have said, For we are truly his offspring.
in ipso enim vivimus et movemur et sumus sicut et quidam vestrum poetarum dixerunt ipsius enim et genus sumus
29 Then being the offspring of God, we ought not to think that divinity is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, the invention of art and the device of man.
genus ergo cum simus Dei non debemus aestimare auro aut argento aut lapidi sculpturae artis et cogitationis hominis divinum esse simile
30 Then indeed God winking at the times of ignorance, now commands all men everywhere to repent:
et tempora quidem huius ignorantiae despiciens Deus nunc adnuntiat hominibus ut omnes ubique paenitentiam agant
31 as He has appointed a day, in which he is about to judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; giving faith to all, having raised Him from the dead.
eo quod statuit diem in qua iudicaturus est orbem in aequitate in viro in quo statuit fidem praebens omnibus suscitans eum a mortuis
32 And having heard the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: others said; We will hear thee concerning this even again.
cum audissent autem resurrectionem mortuorum quidam quidem inridebant quidam vero dixerunt audiemus te de hoc iterum
33 So Paul went out from their midst.
sic Paulus exivit de medio eorum
34 But certain men, having adhered to him, believed; among whom was also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman Damarias by name, and others along with them.
quidam vero viri adherentes ei crediderunt in quibus et Dionisius Ariopagita et mulier nomine Damaris et alii cum eis
