Ruth 1
1 In the time that the Iudges ruled, there was a dearth in the lande, and a man of Beth-lehem Iudah went for to soiourne in the countrey of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sonnes.
A l'époque où les juges jugeaient, il y eut une famine dans le pays. Un homme de Bethléem Juda alla s'installer dans le pays de Moab avec sa femme et ses deux fils.
2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi: and the names of his two sonnes, Mahlon, and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth-lehem Iudah: and when they came into the land of Moab, they continued there.
Cet homme s'appelait Elimélek et sa femme Naomi. Ses deux fils s'appelaient Mahlon et Chilion, Ephrathites de Bethléem Juda. Ils vinrent dans le pays de Moab et y habitèrent.
3 Then Elimelech the husband of Naomi died, and she remayned with her two sonnes,
Elimelech, le mari de Naomi, mourut et elle resta avec ses deux fils.
4 Which tooke them wiues of the Moabites: the ones name was Orpah, and the name of ye other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten yeeres.
Ils prirent pour eux des femmes parmi les femmes de Moab. Le nom de l'une était Orpa, et le nom de l'autre Ruth. Ils habitèrent là environ dix ans.
5 And Mahlon and Chilion dyed also both twaine: so the woman was left destitute of her two sonnes, and of her husband.
Mahlon et Chilion moururent tous deux, et la femme fut privée de ses deux enfants et de son mari.
6 Then she arose with her daughters in law, and returned from the countrey of Moab: for she had heard say in the countrey of Moab, that the Lord had visited his people, and giuen them bread.
Elle se leva avec ses belles-filles pour revenir du pays de Moab, car elle avait entendu dire, dans le pays de Moab, comment Yahvé avait visité son peuple en lui donnant du pain.
7 Wherefore shee departed out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her, and they went on their way to returne vnto the land of Iudah.
Elle sortit du lieu où elle se trouvait, et ses deux belles-filles avec elle. Elles prirent le chemin du retour vers le pays de Juda.
8 Then Naomi saide vnto her two daughters in lawe, Goe, returne eche of you vnto her owne mothers house: the Lord shew fauour vnto you, as ye haue done with the dead, and with me.
Naomi dit à ses deux belles-filles: « Allez, retournez chacune dans la maison de votre mère. Que Yahvé vous traite avec bonté, comme vous avez traité les morts et moi.
9 The Lord graunt you, that you may finde rest, either of you in the house of her husband. And when she kissed them, they lift vp their voice and wept.
Que Yahvé vous accorde de trouver du repos, chacune dans la maison de son mari. » Puis elle les embrassa, et ils élevèrent la voix et pleurèrent.
10 And they saide vnto her, Surely we will returne with thee vnto thy people.
Ils lui dirent: « Non, mais nous retournerons avec toi dans ton peuple. »
11 But Naomi saide, Turne againe, my daughters: for what cause will you go with me? are there any more sonnes in my wombe, that they may bee your husbands?
Naomi dit: « Retournez-y, mes filles. Pourquoi voulez-vous partir avec moi? Ai-je encore des fils dans mon sein, pour qu'ils soient vos maris?
12 Turne againe, my daughters: go your way: for I am too olde to haue an husband. If I should say, I haue hope, and if I had an husband this night: yea, if I had borne sonnes,
Repartez, mes filles, allez votre chemin, car je suis trop vieille pour avoir un mari. Si je disais: « J'ai de l'espoir », si j'avais un mari cette nuit, et si j'avais aussi des fils,
13 Would yee tarie for them, till they were of age? would ye be deferred for them from taking of husbands? nay my daughters: for it grieueth me much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord is gone out against me.
attendriez-vous qu'ils soient grands? Vous abstiendriez-vous d'avoir des maris? Non, mes filles, car cela m'afflige beaucoup à cause de vous, car la main de Yahvé s'est levée contre moi. »
14 Then they lift vp their voyce and wept againe, and Orpah kissed her mother in lawe, but Ruth abode still with her.
Elles élevèrent la voix et pleurèrent de nouveau; puis Orpa embrassa sa belle-mère, mais Ruth resta avec elle.
15 And Naomi said, Beholde, thy sister in law is gone backe vnto her people and vnto her gods: returne thou after thy sister in lawe.
Elle dit: « Voici, ta belle-sœur est retournée vers son peuple et vers son dieu. Suis ta belle-sœur. »
16 And Ruth answered, Intreate mee not to leaue thee, nor to depart from thee: for whither thou goest, I will goe: and where thou dwellest, I will dwell: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.
Ruth dit: « Ne me pousse pas à te quitter et à ne plus te suivre, car là où tu iras, j'irai, et là où tu resteras, je resterai. Ton peuple sera mon peuple, et ton Dieu sera mon Dieu.
17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried. the Lord do so to me and more also, if ought but death depart thee and me.
Là où tu mourras, je mourrai, et là je serai enterré. Que Yahvé me fasse ainsi, et plus encore, si quelque chose d'autre que la mort nous sépare, toi et moi. »
18 Whe she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, she left speaking vnto her.
Lorsque Naomi vit qu'elle était décidée à partir avec elle, elle cessa de la presser.
19 So they went both vntill they came to Beth-lehem: and when they were come to Beth-lehem, it was noysed of them through all the citie, and they said, Is not this Naomi?
Elles allèrent donc toutes deux jusqu'à ce qu'elles arrivent à Bethléem. Lorsqu'elles furent arrivées à Bethléem, toute la ville s'enthousiasma pour elles, et elles demandèrent: « Est-ce Naomi? »
20 And she answered them, Call me not Naomi, but call me Mara: for the Almightie hath giuen me much bitternes.
Elle leur dit: « Ne m'appelez pas Naomi. Appelez-moi Mara, car le Tout-Puissant s'est montré très amer envers moi.
21 I went out full, and the Lord hath caused me to returne emptie: why call ye me Naomi, seeing the Lord hath humbled me, and the Almightie hath brought me vnto aduersitie?
Je suis sortie pleine, et Yahvé m'a ramenée à vide. Pourquoi m'appelez-vous Naomi, puisque Yahvé a témoigné contre moi et que le Tout-Puissant m'a affligée? ».
22 So Naomi returned and Ruth the Moabitesse her daughter in law with her, when she came out of the countrey of Moab: and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barly haruest.
Naomi s'en retourna donc, et Ruth la Moabite, sa belle-fille, avec elle, qui était revenue du pays de Moab. Elles arrivèrent à Bethléem au début de la récolte de l'orge.
