Proverbs 22
1 A good name is to be chosen aboue great riches, and louing fauour is aboue siluer and aboue golde.
La renommée est préférable aux grandes richesses, et la bonne grâce plus que l'argent ni l'or.
2 The rich and poore meete together: the Lord is the maker of them all.
Le riche et le pauvre s'entre-rencontrent: celui qui les a tous faits, c'est l'Eternel.
3 A prudent man seeth the plague, and hideth himselfe: but the foolish goe on still, and are punished.
L'homme bien avisé prévoit le mal, et se tient caché; mais les niais passent, et en payent l'amende.
4 The rewarde of humilitie, and the feare of God is riches, and glory, and life.
La récompense de la débonnaireté et de la crainte de l'Eternel sont les richesses, la gloire et la vie.
5 Thornes and snares are in the way of the frowarde: but he that regardeth his soule, will depart farre from them.
Il y a des épines et des pièges dans la voie du pervers; celui qui aime son âme, s'en retirera loin.
6 Teache a childe in the trade of his way, and when he is olde, he shall not depart from it.
Instruis le jeune enfant, à l'entrée de sa voie; lors même qu'il sera devenu vieux, il ne s'en retirera point.
7 The rich ruleth the poore, and the borower is seruant to the man that lendeth.
Le riche dominera sur les pauvres; et celui qui emprunte, sera serviteur de l'homme qui prête.
8 He that soweth iniquitie, shall reape affliction, and the rodde of his anger shall faile.
Celui qui sème la perversité, moissonnera le tourment; et la verge de son indignation prendra fin.
9 He that hath a good eye, he shalbe blessed: for he giueth of his bread vnto the poore.
L'œil bénin sera béni, parce qu'il aura donné de son pain au pauvre.
10 Cast out the scorner, and strife shall go out: so contention and reproche shall cease.
Chasse le moqueur, et le débat sortira, et la querelle, et l'ignominie cesseront.
11 Hee that loueth purenesse of heart for the grace of his lippes, the King shalbe his friend.
Le Roi est ami de celui qui aime la pureté de cœur, et qui a de la grâce en son parler.
12 The eyes of the Lord preserue knowledge: but hee ouerthroweth the wordes of the transgressour.
Les yeux de l'Eternel protègent la science, mais il renverse les paroles du perfide.
13 The slouthfull man saith, A lyon is without, I shall be slaine in the streete.
Le paresseux dit: le lion est là dehors; je serais tué dans les rues.
14 The mouth of strage women is as a deepe pit: he with whom the Lord is angry, shall fall therein.
La bouche des étrangers est une fosse profonde; celui que l'Eternel a en détestation, y tombera.
15 Foolishnesse is bounde in the heart of a childe: but the rodde of correction shall driue it away from him.
La folie est liée au cœur du jeune enfant; [mais] la verge du châtiment la fera éloigner de lui.
16 Hee that oppresseth the poore to increase him selfe, and giueth vnto the riche, shall surely come to pouertie.
Celui qui fait tort au pauvre pour s'accroître, et qui donne au riche, ne peut manquer de tomber dans l'indigence.
17 Incline thine eare, and heare the wordes of the wise, and apply thine heart vnto my knowledge.
Prête ton oreille, et écoute les paroles des sages, et applique ton cœur à ma science.
18 For it shalbe pleasant, if thou keepe them in thy bellie, and if they be directed together in thy lippes.
Car ce te sera une chose agréable si tu les gardes au-dedans de toi, et si elles sont rangées ensemble sur tes lèvres.
19 That thy confidence may be in the Lord, I haue shewed thee this day: thou therefore take heede.
Je te l'ai aujourd'hui fait entendre, à toi, dis-je, afin que ta confiance soit en l'Eternel.
20 Haue not I written vnto thee three times in counsels and knowledge,
Ne t'ai-je pas écrit des choses convenables aux Gouverneurs en conseil et en science;
21 That I might shewe thee the assurance of the wordes of trueth to answere the wordes of trueth to them that sende to thee?
Afin de te donner à connaître la certitude des paroles de vérité, pour répondre des paroles de vérité à ceux qui envoient vers toi?
22 Robbe not the poore, because hee is poore, neither oppresse the afflicted in iudgement.
Ne pille point le chétif, parce qu'il est chétif; et ne foule point l'affligé à la porte.
23 For the Lord will defende their cause, and spoyle the soule of those that spoyle them.
Car l'Eternel défendra leur cause, et enlèvera l'âme de ceux qui les auront volés.
24 Make no friendship with an angrie man, neither goe with the furious man,
Ne t'accompagne point de l'homme colère, et ne va point avec l'homme furieux;
25 Least thou learne his wayes, and receiue destruction to thy soule.
De peur que tu n'apprennes son train, et que tu ne reçoives un piège dans ton âme.
26 Be not thou of them that touch the hand, nor among them that are suretie for debts.
Ne sois point de ceux qui frappent dans la main, ni de ceux qui cautionnent pour les dettes.
27 If thou hast nothing to paye, why causest thou that he should take thy bed from vnder thee?
Si tu n'avais pas de quoi payer, pourquoi prendrait-on ton lit de dessous toi?
28 Thou shalt not remooue the ancient bounds which thy fathers haue made.
Ne recule point la borne ancienne que tes pères ont faite.
29 Thou seest that a diligent man in his businesse standeth before Kings, and standeth not before the base sort.
As-tu vu un homme habile en son travail? il sera au service des Rois, et non à celui des gens de basse condition.
