Proverbs 22
1 A good name is to be chosen aboue great riches, and louing fauour is aboue siluer and aboue golde.
Un nom estimé est préférable à la grande richesse: la sympathie est plus précieuse que l’argent et que l’or.
2 The rich and poore meete together: the Lord is the maker of them all.
Riche et pauvre sont sur la même ligne: l’Eternel les a faits l’un et l’autre.
3 A prudent man seeth the plague, and hideth himselfe: but the foolish goe on still, and are punished.
L’Homme avisé aperçoit le danger et se met à l’abri; les niais passent outre et en pâtissent.
4 The rewarde of humilitie, and the feare of God is riches, and glory, and life.
Fruits de l’humilité, de la crainte de Dieu: richesse, honneur et vie!
5 Thornes and snares are in the way of the frowarde: but he that regardeth his soule, will depart farre from them.
Des lacets et des pièges sont semés sur la route du pervers; qui tient à sa vie s’en éloigne.
6 Teache a childe in the trade of his way, and when he is olde, he shall not depart from it.
Donne au jeune homme de bonnes habitudes dès le début de sa carrière; même avancé en âge, il ne s’en écartera point.
7 The rich ruleth the poore, and the borower is seruant to the man that lendeth.
Le riche prime les pauvres; le débiteur est prisonnier de son créancier.
8 He that soweth iniquitie, shall reape affliction, and the rodde of his anger shall faile.
Qui sème l’injustice, récolte l’adversité, l’instrument de sa passion sera anéanti.
9 He that hath a good eye, he shalbe blessed: for he giueth of his bread vnto the poore.
Celui qui a bon cœur sera béni, car il partage son pain avec le pauvre.
10 Cast out the scorner, and strife shall go out: so contention and reproche shall cease.
Expulse le persifleur, la discorde décampera avec lui, plus de disputes ni d’injures!
11 Hee that loueth purenesse of heart for the grace of his lippes, the King shalbe his friend.
Un ami au cœur pur, par l’agrément de ses lèvres, gagne l’affection du roi.
12 The eyes of the Lord preserue knowledge: but hee ouerthroweth the wordes of the transgressour.
Les yeux de l’Eternel protègent le vrai savoir; mais ils renversent les entreprises du perfide.
13 The slouthfull man saith, A lyon is without, I shall be slaine in the streete.
Le paresseux s’écrie: "Il y a un lion dehors! Je vais être massacré en pleine rue!"
14 The mouth of strage women is as a deepe pit: he with whom the Lord is angry, shall fall therein.
La bouche des femmes étrangères est comme un abîme profond; celui que Dieu réprouve y tombe.
15 Foolishnesse is bounde in the heart of a childe: but the rodde of correction shall driue it away from him.
La sottise est attachée au cœur de l’adolescent; la verge qui châtie doit l’en arracher.
16 Hee that oppresseth the poore to increase him selfe, and giueth vnto the riche, shall surely come to pouertie.
On pressure le pauvre, et cela tourne à son profit; on donne au riche, et c’est un appauvrissement pour lui.
17 Incline thine eare, and heare the wordes of the wise, and apply thine heart vnto my knowledge.
Incline ton oreille et écoute les paroles des sages; prête ton attention aux leçons de mon expérience.
18 For it shalbe pleasant, if thou keepe them in thy bellie, and if they be directed together in thy lippes.
II sera beau pour toi de les retenir en ton cœur, de les fixer en permanence sur tes lèvres.
19 That thy confidence may be in the Lord, I haue shewed thee this day: thou therefore take heede.
Mets ta confiance en l’Eternel; voilà ce que je t’enseigne à toi-même en ce jour.
20 Haue not I written vnto thee three times in counsels and knowledge,
N’Est-ce pas à ton intention que j’ai consigné par écrit d’importantes maximes, en fait de bons conseils et d’expérience,
21 That I might shewe thee the assurance of the wordes of trueth to answere the wordes of trueth to them that sende to thee?
pour t’apprendre ce qu’iI y a de réel dans les dictons de la vérité et te permettre de présenter fidèlement les choses à ceux qui t’envoient?
22 Robbe not the poore, because hee is poore, neither oppresse the afflicted in iudgement.
Ne dépouille pas le faible parce qu’il est sans défense; n’écrase pas le pauvre à la Porte,
23 For the Lord will defende their cause, and spoyle the soule of those that spoyle them.
car l’Eternel prend en mains leur cause et il traite avec rigueur ceux qui leur infligent des vexations.
24 Make no friendship with an angrie man, neither goe with the furious man,
Ne fraye pas avec un homme irascible, ne lie pas société avec quelqu’un qui s’emporte:
25 Least thou learne his wayes, and receiue destruction to thy soule.
tu pourrais copier leurs mœurs et t’engager toi-même dans un piège.
26 Be not thou of them that touch the hand, nor among them that are suretie for debts.
Ne sois pas de ceux qui disent: "Touchez-là!" et qui se portent garants pour des emprunts.
27 If thou hast nothing to paye, why causest thou that he should take thy bed from vnder thee?
Que tu n’aies pas de quoi payer, pourquoi t’exposer à ce que l’on saisisse la couche où tu reposes?
28 Thou shalt not remooue the ancient bounds which thy fathers haue made.
Ne déplace pas les bornes antiques, que tes pères ont posées.
29 Thou seest that a diligent man in his businesse standeth before Kings, and standeth not before the base sort.
Vois cet homme diligent dans son travail: il pourra paraître devant les rois au lieu de se tenir auprès des gens obscurs.
