Proverbs 20
1 Wine is a mocker and strong drinke is raging: and whosoeuer is deceiued thereby, is not wise.
El vino te transforma en un burlador, y el alcohol te vuelve agresivo. Si te dejas engañar por la bebida, eres un tonto.
2 The feare of the King is like the roaring of a lyon: hee that prouoketh him vnto anger, sinneth against his owne soule.
Cuando un rey se enoja en gran manera, se escuchará como un león rugiente. Quien haya causado su enojo corre el riesgo de ir a la muerte.
3 It is a mans honour to cease from strife: but euery foole will be medling.
Evitar el conflicto es hacer lo correcto. Pero los necios se apresuran a iniciar la discusión.
4 The slouthfull will not plowe, because of winter: therefore shall he beg in sommer, but haue nothing.
Los holgazanes no salen a sembrar cuando deberían. Por eso, cuando llega la cosecha, no tienen nada que recoger.
5 The counsell in the heart of man is like deepe waters: but a man that hath vnderstanding, will drawe it out.
Descubrir lo que piensan los demás es como mirar en aguas profundas. Pero el que tiene entendimiento los conocerá.
6 Many men wil boast, euery one of his owne goodnes: but who can finde a faithfull man?
Muchos te dirán que son leales, pero ¿podrás hallar a una persona digna de confianza?
7 He that walketh in his integritie, is iust: and blessed shall his children be after him.
El pueblo de Dios vive con honestidad. ¡Cuán felices son sus hijos si siguen tal ejemplo!
8 A King that sitteth in the throne of iudgement, chaseth away all euill with his eyes.
Cuando el rey se sienta a emitir un juicio, puede ver lo que no está bien.
9 Who can say, I haue made mine heart cleane, I am cleane from my sinne?
¿Quién puede decir: “Estoy seguro de que mi conciencia está limpia y estoy limpio de pecado”?
10 Diuers weightes, and diuers measures, both these are euen abomination vnto the Lord.
El Señor aborrece el peso falso así como la medida falsa.
11 A childe also is knowen by his doings, whether his worke be pure and right.
Hasta los niños revelan su carácter por lo que hacen, ya sean acciones buenas o malas.
12 The Lord hath made both these, euen the eare to heare, and the eye to see.
El Señor nos dio orejas para oír y ojos para ver.
13 Loue not sleepe least thou come vnto pouertie: open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
Si te gusta dormir, terminarás pobre. Levántate y trabaja, para que tengas qué comer.
14 It is naught, it is naught, sayth the buyer: but when he is gone apart, he boasteth.
“Es basura”, dice el que compra, pero luego se jacta delante de otros de haber hecho un buen negocio.
15 There is golde, and a multitude of precious stones: but the lips of knowledge are a precious iewel.
Hay oro y muchas piedras preciosas. Pero hablar con sensatez es la joya más valiosa.
16 Take his garment, that is suretie for a stranger, and a pledge of him for the stranger.
Si alguno sirve como codeudor de un extranjero dando su abrigo como garantía de pago, asegúrate de tomarlo. ¡Toma todo lo que haya sido entregado como pago a favor de un extranjero!
17 The bread of deceit is sweete to a man: but afterward his mouth shalbe filled with grauel.
La comida que es producto del fraude puede tener un dulce sabor, pero después verán sus bocas llenas de gravilla.
18 Establish the thoughtes by counsell: and by counsell make warre.
Con el consejo sabio, los planes son exitosos. Si vas a la guerra, asegúrate de tener la instrucción correcta.
19 He that goeth about as a slanderer, discouereth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
El chismoso anda de aquí para allá revelando secretos. Aléjate de aquellos que hablan mucho.
20 He that curseth his father or his mother, his light shalbe put out in obscure darkenes.
Todo aquél que maldice a su padre o a su madre apaga su luz y terminará en oscuridad absoluta.
21 An heritage is hastely gotten at the beginning, but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
La riqueza rápida no te hará bien al final de cuentas.
22 Say not thou, I wil recompense euill: but waite vpon the Lord, and he shall saue thee.
No digas: “Me pagarás por este mal que me has hecho”. Déjaselo al Señor, y él te ayudará.
23 Diuers weightes are an abomination vnto the Lord, and deceitful balances are not good.
El Señor aborrece el peso incorrecto. No está bien usar peso falso.
24 The steps of man are ruled by the Lord: how can a man then vnderstand his owne way?
El Señor nos muestra el camino a seguir, ¿por qué habríamos de decidir nosotros mismos?
25 It is a destruction for a man to deuoure that which is sanctified, and after the vowes to inquire.
Es un error hacerle una promesa al Señor y luego arrepentirnos de lo que hemos prometido.
26 A wise King scattereth the wicked, and causeth the wheele to turne ouer them.
Un rey sabio separa a los malvados con un aventador y luego los castiga cuando hace el trillado.
27 The light of the Lord is the breath of man, and searcheth all the bowels of the belly.
La luz del Señor brilla en la conciencia, revelando nuestros más profundos pensamientos.
28 Mercie and trueth preserue the King: for his throne shall be established with mercie.
El amor fiel y la lealtad mantienen al rey a salvo. El amor fiel es el fundamento de su gobierno.
29 The beautie of yong men is their strength, and the glory of the aged is the gray head.
Los jóvenes valoran su fuerza, pero los ancianos estiman más la sabiduría que viene con los años.
30 The blewnes of the wound serueth to purge the euill, and the stripes within the bowels of the belly.
Los azotes espantan la maldad; los golpes limpian hasta adentro.
