Philippians 1
1 Paul and Timotheus the seruants of IESVS CHRIST, to all the Saintes in Christ Iesus which are at Philippi, with the Bishops, and Deacons:
Paul et Timothée, serviteurs de Jésus-Christ, à tous les saints en Jésus-Christ, qui sont à Philippes, ainsi qu'aux évêques et aux diacres.
2 Grace be with you, and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Iesus Christ.
Que la grâce et la paix vous soient données de la part de Dieu, notre Père, et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ!
3 I thanke my God, hauing you in perfect memorie,
Je rends grâces à mon Dieu, toutes les fois que je me souviens de vous;
4 (Alwayes in all my praiers for all you, praying with gladnesse)
et, dans toutes les prières que je fais pour vous tous, je prie toujours avec joie,
5 Because of the fellowship which ye haue in the Gospel, from the first day vnto nowe.
à cause de la part que vous avez prise aux progrès de l'Évangile, depuis le premier jour jusqu'à maintenant,
6 And I am persuaded of this same thing, that he that hath begunne this good worke in you, wil perfourme it vntill the day of Iesus Christ,
— étant persuadé que celui qui a commencé en vous cette bonne oeuvre, en poursuivra l'achèvement jusqu'au jour de Jésus-Christ.
7 As it becommeth me so to iudge of you all, because I haue you in remembrance that both in my bands, and in my defence, and confirmation of the Gospell you all were partakers of my grace.
Il est bien juste que j'éprouve au sujet de vous tous de tels sentiments; car je vous porte dans mon coeur, vous qui, soit dans mes liens, soit dans la défense et la confirmation de l'Évangile, avez tous participé à la grâce qui m'a été accordée.
8 For God is my recorde, howe I long after you all from the very heart roote in Iesus Christ.
Aussi Dieu m'est-il témoin que je vous chéris tous avec la tendresse de Jésus-Christ.
9 And this I pray, that your loue may abound, yet more and more in knowledge, and in all iudgement,
Et ce que je demande dans mes prières, c'est que votre charité abonde encore de plus en plus, avec la connaissance et tout le discernement nécessaire,
10 That ye may alowe those things which are best, that ye may be pure, and without offence vntill the day of Christ,
pour bien apprécier la différence des choses, afin que vous soyez purs et irrépréhensibles pour le jour de Christ,
11 Filled with the fruites of righteousnesse, which are by Iesus Christ vnto the glorie and praise of God.
portant en abondance les fruits de la justice, qui viennent de Jésus-Christ, à la gloire et à la louange de Dieu.
12 I would ye vnderstood, brethren, that the things which haue come vnto me, are turned rather to the furthering of the Gospell,
Or, je veux que vous sachiez, frères, que ce qui m'est arrivé a plutôt contribué aux progrès de l'Évangile,
13 So that my bandes in Christ are famous throughout all the iudgement hall, and in all other places,
au point que, dans tout le prétoire et partout ailleurs, il est devenu manifeste. que je suis prisonnier pour Christ.
14 In so much that many of the brethren in the Lord are boldened through my bandes, and dare more frankely speake the word.
Et la plupart des frères, ayant, à cause de mes liens, une plus grande hardiesse dans le Seigneur, osent annoncer sans crainte la parole de Dieu.
15 Some preache. Christ euen through enuie and strife, and some also of good will.
Quelques-uns, il est vrai, prêchent le Christ dans un esprit d'envie et de dispute; mais d'autres aussi le font dans des dispositions bienveillantes.
16 The one part preacheth Christ of contention and not purely, supposing to adde more affliction to my bandes.
Ceux-ci agissent par affection; ils savent que je suis établi pour la défense de l'Évangile.
17 But the others of loue, knowing that I am set for the defence of the Gospell.
Ceux-là, poussés par l'esprit de parti, annoncent le Christ dans des intentions qui ne sont pas pures, croyant ajouter un surcroît d'affliction à mes liens.
18 What then? yet Christ is preached all maner wayes, whether it be vnder a pretence, or syncerely: and I therein ioye: yea and will ioye.
Qu'importe! De quelque manière que ce soit, avec un zèle apparent ou avec sincérité. Christ est annoncé: c'est de quoi je me réjouis, et je m'en réjouirai encore.
19 For I knowe that this shall turne to my saluation through your prayer, and by the helpe of the Spirit of Iesus Christ,
Car je sais que cela tournera à mon salut, grâce à vos prières et au secours de l'Esprit de Jésus-Christ.
20 As I feruently looke for, and hope, that in nothing I shalbe ashamed, but that with all confidence, as alwayes, so nowe Christ shalbe magnified in my body, whether it be by life or by death.
J'ai cette ferme espérance que je ne serai rendu confus en rien, mais que, maintenant comme toujours, je parlerai avec une entière liberté, et qu'ainsi Christ sera glorifié dans mon corps, soit par ma vie, soit par ma mort.
21 For Christ is to me both in life, and in death aduantage.
Car Christ est ma vie, et la mort m'est un gain.
22 And whether to liue in the flesh were profitable for me, and what to chuse I knowe not.
S'il vaut la peine pour moi de continuer à vivre dans la chair, et ce que je dois préférer, je ne saurais le dire.
23 For I am distressed betweene both, desiring to be loosed and to be with Christ, which is best of all.
Je suis pressé des deux côtés, mon désir étant de partir pour être avec Christ, ce qui est de beaucoup préférable;
24 Neuerthelesse, to abide in the flesh, is more needefull for you.
mais il est nécessaire pour vous que je demeure dans ce corps.
25 And this am I sure of, that I shall abide, and with you all continue, for your furtherance and ioy of your faith,
C'est là ma ferme confiance; aussi ai-je la certitude que je resterai et que je demeurerai avec vous tous, pour le progrès et la joie de votre foi,
26 That ye may more aboundantly reioyce in IESVS CHRIST for me, by my comming to you againe.
afin que, à mon retour auprès de vous, vous ayez toujours plus sujet, par rapport à moi, de vous glorifier en Jésus-Christ.
27 Onely let your conuersation be, as it becommeth the Gospel of Christ, that whether I come and see you, or els be absent, I may heare of your matters that ye continue in one Spirit, and in one mind, fighting together through the faith of the Gospel.
Seulement, conduisez-vous d'une manière digne de l'Évangile du Christ, afin que, soit que je vienne vous voir ou que je sois absent, j'apprenne que vous demeurez fermes dans un même esprit, combattant d'une même âme pour la foi de l'Évangile,
28 And in nothing feare your aduersaries, which is to them a token of perdition, and to you of saluation, and that of God.
sans vous laisser intimider en rien par les adversaires: ce qui est un signe de perdition pour eux, mais de salut pour vous. Et cela est voulu de Dieu,
29 For vnto you it is giuen for Christ, that not onely ye should beleeue in him, but also suffer for his sake,
lui qui vous a fait la grâce, par rapport à Christ, non seulement de croire en lui, mais encore de souffrir pour lui,
30 Hauing the same fight, which ye sawe in me, and nowe heare to be in me.
en soutenant le même combat que vous m'avez vu soutenir, et que je soutiens encore, comme vous l'avez appris.
