Numbers 22
1 After, the children of Israel departed and pitched in the plaine of Moab on the other side of Iorden from Iericho.
Hierauf zogen die Israeliten weiter und lagerten sich in den Steppen Moabs, jenseits des Jordan gegenüber Jericho.
2 Now Balak the sonne of Zippor sawe all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
Balak, der Sohn Zipors, aber sah alles, was die Israeliten den Amoritern zufügten.
3 And the Moabites were sore afraide of the people, because they were many, and Moab fretted against the children of Israel.
Da gerieten die Moabiter in große Furcht vor dem Volke; denn dasselbe war zahlreich, und den Moabitern wurde angst und bange vor den Israeliten.
4 Therfore Moab said vnto the Elders of Midian, Nowe shall this multitude licke vp all that are round about vs, as an oxe licketh vp ye grasse of the fielde: and Balak the sonne of Zippor was King of the Moabites at that time.
Da sprachen die Moabiter zu den Vornehmsten der Midianiter: Wie es jetzt steht, wird dieser Haufe alles, was sich in unserer Umgebung findet, aufessen, wie die Stiere alles Grüne auf den Feldern abfressen. Balak, der Sohn Zipors, war aber zu jener Zeit König über die Moabiter.
5 Hee sent messengers therefore vnto Balaam the sonne of Beor to Pethor (which is by the riuer of the lande of the children of his folke) to call him, saying, Beholde, there is a people come out of Egypt, which couer the face of the earth, and lye ouer against me.
Da sandte er Boten an Bileam, den Sohn Beors, nach Pethor, das am Euphrat liegt, nach dem Lande seiner Volksgenossen, um ihn herbeizurufen, und ließ ihm sagen: Da ist ein Volk aus Ägypten ausgezogen, das hat das Land weit und breit überflutet und nun lagert es mir gegenüber.
6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, and curse me this people (for they are stronger then I) so it may be that I shall be able to smite them, and to driue them out of the land: for I knowe that hee, whome thou blessest, is blessed, and he whom thou cursest, shall be cursed.
So komm nun und verfluche mir dieses Volk, denn es ist mir zu mächtig; vielleicht kann ich ihm dann eine Niederlage beibringen und es aus dem Lande vertreiben. Ich weiß ja: wen du segnest, der bleibt gesegnet, und wem du fluchst, der bleibt verflucht!
7 And the Elders of Moab, and the Elders of Midian departed, hauing the reward of the soothsaying in their hande, and they came vnto Balaam, and tolde him the wordes of Balak.
Da brachen die Vornehmsten der Moabiter und die Vornehmsten der Midianiter auf, indem sie Wahrsagerlohn mitnahmen, gelangten zu Bileam und richteten ihm den Auftrag Balaks aus.
8 Who answered them, Tary here this night, and I will giue you an answere, as the Lord shall say vnto mee. So the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
Er aber antwortete ihnen: Bleibt heute Nacht hier, so will ich euch Bescheid geben, je nachdem Jahwe mich anweisen wird. Da blieben die Häuptlinge der Moabiter bei Bileam.
9 Then God came vnto Balaam, and sayde, What men are these with thee?
Gott aber kam zu Bileam und fragte ihn: Wer sind die Männer, die da bei dir sind?
10 And Baalam said vnto God, Balak ye sonne of Zippor, king of Moab hath set vnto me, saying,
Bileam antwortete Gott: Balak, der Sohn Zipors, der König von Moab, hat mir Botschaft gesandt:
11 Beholde, there is a people come out of Egypt and couereth the face of the earth: come nowe, curse them for my sake: so it may be that I shalbe able to ouercome them in battell, and to driue them out.
Da ist ein Volk, das aus Ägypten ausgezogen ist und das ganze Land weit und breit überflutet hat; so komm nun und verwünsche mir dasselbe; vielleicht bin ich dann imstande, es zu bekämpfen und es zu vertreiben.
12 And God said vnto Balaam, Go not thou with them, neither curse the people, for they are blessed.
Gott aber sprach zu Bileam: Du darfst nicht mit ihnen gehen, du darfst dieses Volk nicht verfluchen, denn es ist ein gesegnetes!
13 And Balaam rose vp in the morning, and sayde vnto ye princes of Balak, Returne vnto your land: for the Lord hath refused to giue me leaue to go with you.
Frühmorgens nun gab Bileam den Häuptlingen Balaks den Bescheid: Zieht nur in euer Land, denn Jahwe, will es mir nicht gestatten, mit euch zu ziehn.
14 So the princes of Moab rose vp, and went vnto Balak, and sayd, Balaam hath refused to come with vs.
Da brachen die Häuptlinge der Moabiter auf, gelangten wieder zu Balak und berichteten: Bileam hat sich geweigert, mit uns zu ziehn!
15 Balak yet sent againe moe princes, and more honourable then they.
Hierauf entsandte Balak nochmals Boten und zwar noch mehr und angesehenere Häuptlinge, als jene.
16 Who came to Balaam, and sayde to him, Thus saith Balak the sonne of Zippor, Bee not thou staied, I pray thee, from comming vnto me.
Als diese zu Bileam gelangt waren, sprachen sie zu ihm: So läßt dir Balak, der Sohn Zipors, sagen: Schlage es nicht ab, zu mir zu kommen!
17 For I wil promote thee vnto great honour, and wil do whatsoeuer thou sayest vnto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.
Ich will dir's überaus reichlich lohnen und will alles thun, was du mich heißest; so komm nun und verwünsche mir dieses Volk!
18 And Balaam answered, and sayde vnto the seruants of Balak, If Balak woulde giue me his house full of siluer and golde, I can not goe beyonde the worde of the Lord my God, to doe lesse or more.
Bileam aber entgegnete den Untergebenen Balaks: Wenn mir Balak Silber und Gold schenkte, so viel nur in sein Haus geht, so könnte ich doch dem Befehle Jahwes, meines Gottes, nicht zuwiderhandeln, möchte es nun eine geringfügige oder eine wichtige Sache betreffen.
19 But nowe, I pray you, tary here this night, that I may wit, what the Lord will say vnto mee more.
Bleibt also nun auch ihr heute Nacht hier, damit ich erst in Erfahrung bringe, was Jahwe mir diesmal sagt.
20 And God came vnto Balaam by night, and sayd vnto him, If the men come to call thee, rise vp, and goe with them: but onely what thing I say vnto thee, that shalt thou doe.
Während der Nacht aber kam Gott zu Bileam und sprach zu ihm: Wenn diese Männer gekommen sind, um dich zu berufen, so mache dich auf und geh mit ihnen; nur darfst du nichts anderes thun, als was ich dich heißen werde.
21 So Balaam rose vp early, and sadled his asse, and went with the princes of Moab.
Am andern Morgen früh zäumte Bileam seine Eselin auf und zog mit den Häuptlingen der Moabiter von dannen.
22 And ye wrath of God was kindled, because he went: and the Angel of the Lord stood in the way to be against him, as he rode vpon his asse, and his two seruants were with him.
Aber Gott geriet in Zorn darüber, daß er sich auf den Weg gemacht hatte; und der Engel Jahwes trat ihm auf dem Wege feindselig entgegen, während er auf seiner Eselin ritt und seine beiden Diener bei sich hatte.
23 And when the asse saw the Angel of the Lord stand in the way, and his sworde drawen in his hand, the asse turned out of the way and went into the field, but Balaam smote the asse, to turne her into the way.
Als nun die Eselin sah, wie der Engel Jahwes mit dem gezückten Schwert in der Hand auf dem Wege dastand, da bog die Eselin vom Weg ab und ging auf dem Felde; Bileam aber schlug die Eselin, um sie wieder auf den Weg zu bringen.
24 Againe the Angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyardes, hauing a wall on the one side, and a wall on the other.
Da trat der Engel Jahwes in den Hohlweg zwischen den Weinbergen, wo zu beiden Seiten eine Mauer war.
25 And when the asse sawe the Angel of the Lord, she thrust her selfe vnto the wall, and dasht Balaams foote against the wall: wherefore hee smote her againe.
Als nun die Eselin den Engel Jahwes erblickte, drängte sie sich an die Mauerwand und preßte so den Fuß Bileams an die Mauerwand; da schlug er sie abermals.
26 Then the Angel of the Lord went further, and stoode in a narowe place, where was no way to turne, either to the right hand, or to the left.
Der Engel Jahwes aber ging nochmals voraus und trat an eine enge Stelle, wo keine Möglichkeit war, nach rechts oder nach links auszuweichen.
27 And when the asse sawe the Angell of the Lord, she lay downe vnder Balaam: therefore Balaam was very wroth, and smote the asse with a staffe.
Als nun die Eselin den Engel Jahwes erblickte, legte sie sich unter Bileam auf den Boden. Da geriet Bileam in Zorn und schlug die Eselin mit dem Stocke.
28 Then the Lord opened the mouth of the asse, and she saide vnto Balaam, What haue I done vnto thee, that thou hast smitten me nowe three times?
Jahwe aber verlieh der Eselin Sprache; da sagte sie zu Bileam: Was habe ich dir gethan, daß du mich nun schon dreimal geschlagen hast?
29 And Balaam saide vnto the asse, Because thou hast mocked me: I woulde there were a sworde in mine hand, for nowe would I kill thee.
Bileam erwiderte der Eselin: Weil du mich zum Narren gehabt hast! Hätte ich nur ein Schwert in der Hand, so hätte ich dich längst umgebracht!
30 And the asse saide vnto Balaam, Am not I thine asse, which thou hast ridden vpon since thy first time vnto this day? haue I vsed at any time to doe thus vnto thee? Who said, Nay.
Da sprach die Eselin zu Bileam: Bin ich denn nicht deine Eselin, auf der du geritten bist von jeher bis auf den heutigen Tag? Hatte ich jemals die Gewohnheit, so gegen dich zu handeln? Er erwiderte: Nein!
31 And the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he sawe the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with his sword drawen in his hande: then he bowed him selfe, and fell flat on his face.
Da öffnete Jahwe Bileam die Augen, daß er den Engel Jahwes erblickte, wie er mit dem gezückten Schwert in der Hand auf dem Wege dastand. Da verneigte er sich und warf sich zu Boden.
32 And the Angel of the Lord said vnto him, Wherefore hast thou nowe smitten thine asse three times? beholde, I came out to withstande thee, because thy way is not straight before me.
Der Engel Jahwes aber sprach zu ihm: Warum hast du deine Eselin nun schon dreimal geschlagen? Ich bin es ja, der dir entgegengetreten ist, denn der Weg ist abschüssig vor mir.
33 But the asse sawe me, and turned from me now three times: for els, if she had not turned from me, surely I had euen nowe slaine thee, and saued her aliue.
Die Eselin aber sah mich und wich mir daher nun schon dreimal aus. Wäre sie mir nicht ausgewichen, so hätte ich dich schon längst umgebracht; sie aber hätte ich am Leben gelassen.
34 Then Balaam saide vnto the Angel of the Lord, I haue sinned: for I wist not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore if it displease thee, I will turne home againe.
Da erwiderte Bileam dem Engel Jahwes: Ich habe gefehlt; ich wußte ja nicht, daß du mir auf dem Weg entgegengetreten warst. Wenn es dir also mißfällig ist, so will ich wieder umkehren!
35 But the Angel said vnto Balaam, Go with the men: but what I say vnto thee, that shalt thou speake. So Balaam went with ye princes of Balak.
Der Engel Jahwes aber antwortete Bileam: Zieh nur hin mit den Männern; aber bloß die Worte, die ich dir eingeben werde, darfst du reden! Da zog Bileam mit den Häuptlingen Balaks weiter.
36 And when Balak heard that Balaam came, he went out to meete him vnto a citie of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, euen in the vtmost coast.
Als nun Balak vernahm, daß Bileam unterwegs sei, zog er ihm entgegen bis nach Ir Moab, das an der Arnongrenze liegt, an der äußersten Grenze.
37 Then Balak saide vnto Balaam, Did I not sende for thee to call thee? Wherefore camest thou not vnto me? am I not able in deede to promote thee vnto honour?
Da sprach Balak zu Bileam: habe ich denn nicht wiederholt Boten an dich geschickt, um dich rufen zu lassen? Warum bist du nicht zu mir gekommen? Bin ich denn etwa nicht imstande, dir es reichlich zu lohnen?
38 And Balaam made answere vnto Balak, Lo, I am come vnto thee, and can I nowe say any thing at all? the worde that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speake.
Bileam antwortete Balak: Wohl bin ich zu dir gekommen. Aber werde ich wirklich irgend etwas reden können? Die Worte, die mir Gott in den Mund legt, die werde ich reden!
39 So Balaam went with Balak, and they came vnto the citie of Huzoth.
Hierauf ging Bileam mit Balak, und sie gelangten nach Kirjath Chuzoth.
40 Then Balak offred bullockes, and sheepe, and sent thereof to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
Balak aber ließ Rinder und Schafe opfern und sandte Stücke davon an Bileam und die Häuptlinge, die bei ihm waren.
41 And on the morowe Balak tooke Balaam, and brought him vp into the hie places of Baal, that thence hee might see the vtmost part of the people.
Am andern Morgen früh aber nahm Balak Bileam mit und führte ihn hinauf nach Bamoth Baal; von dort konnte er einen Teil des Volkes sehen.
