Numbers 21
1 When King Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt toward the South, heard tel that Israel came by the way of the spies, then fought hee against Israel, and tooke of them prysoners.
Cependant, le Chananéen roi d'Arad, voisin du désert, apprit qu'Israël s'avançait par le chemin d'Atharin. Aussitôt, il prit les armes contre Israël, et il lui enleva quelques prisonniers.
2 So Israel vowed a vowe vnto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt deliuer and giue this people into mine hand, then I wil vtterly destroy their cities.
Israël fit alors un vœu au Seigneur, disant: Si vous me livrez ce peuple qui est sous ma main, je l'anathématiserai lui et ses villes.
3 And the Lord heard the voyce of Israel, and deliuered them the Canaanites: and they vtterly destroied them and their cities, and called ye name of the place Hormah.
Le Seigneur ouït la voix d'Israël, et il lui livra le Chananéen; Israël, de son côté, l'anathématisa lui et ses villes, et il donna à ce lieu le nom d'Anathème.
4 After, they departed from the mount Hor by the way of the red Sea, to compasse the land of Edom: and the people were sore grieued because of the way.
Ils levèrent ensuite leur camp de la montagne de Hor pour quitter le chemin de la mer Rouge et tourner autour d'Edom; mais dans ce voyage le peuple défaillit,
5 And the people spake against God and against Moses, saying, Wherefore haue ye brought vs out of Egypt, to die in the wildernesse? for here is neither bread nor water, and our soule lotheth this light bread.
Il injuria Dieu et Moïse, disant: Qu'allons-nous devenir? Tu nous a tirés de l'Egypte pour nous faire mourir dans le désert où il n'y a ni pain ni eau; notre âme se révolte contre cette maigre manne dont nous sommes nourris.
6 Wherefore the Lord sent fierie serpents among ye people, which stung the people: so that many of the people of Israel died.
Alors, le Seigneur envoya contre le peuple des serpents dont le venin était mortel, et ils mordirent le peuple, et une multitude des fils d'Israël périt.
7 Therefore the people came to Moses and said, We haue sinned: for wee haue spoken against the Lord, and against thee: pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from vs: and Moses prayed for the people.
Et le peuple alla trouver Moïse, disant: Nous avons péché; nous avons injurié le Seigneur et toi; prie donc le Seigneur qu'il éloigne de nous les serpents.
8 And the Lord said vnto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it vp for a signe, that as many as are bitten, may looke vpon it, and liue.
Moïse pria le Seigneur pour le peuple, et le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Fais un serpent, et pose-le au haut d'une enseigne; quand un serpent mordra un homme, quiconque sera mordu et regardera ce signe, vivra.
9 So Moses made a serpent of brasse, and set it vp for a signe: and when a serpent had bitten a man, then he looked to the serpent of brasse, and liued.
Moïse fit donc un serpent d'airain qu'il plaça au haut d'une enseigne, et quand un serpent mordait un homme, celui-ci regardait le serpent d'airain, et il vivait.
10 And ye children of Israel departed thence, and pitched in Oboth.
Les fils d'Israël se mirent en marche, et ils s'arrêtèrent en Oboth.
11 And they departed from Oboth, and pitched in lie-abarim, in the wildernesse, which is before Moab on the Eastside.
Etant partis d'Oboth, ils campèrent en Achalgé, hors de la région du désert qui regarde Moab du côté du levant.
12 They remoued thence, and pitched vpon the riuer of Zared.
Partis de nouveau, ils campèrent dans le val de Zared.
13 Thence they departed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wildernesse, and commeth out of the coasts of the Amorites: (for Arnon is the border of Moab, betweene the Moabites and the Amorites)
De ce lieu, ils campèrent sur l'Arnon, dans la région du désert qui fait saillie sur les limites des Amorrhéens; cet Arnon est frontière de Moab, entre Moab et l'Amorrhéen.
14 Wherefore it shall be spoken in the booke of the battels of the Lord, what thing he did in the red sea, and in the riuers of Arnon,
C'est pourquoi il est écrit en un livre: La guerre du Seigneur a embrasé Zoob et les torrents d'Arnon,
15 And at the streame of the riuers that goeth downe to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth vpon the border of Moab.
Et il a placé auprès des torrents la demeure de Ar, qui est contiguë aux frontières de Moab.
16 And from thence they turned to Beer: the same is the well where the Lord said vnto Moses, Assemble the people, and I wil giue them water.
Or, il y a en ce lieu un puits: c'est le puits au sujet duquel le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Rassemble le peuple, et je leur donnerai de l'eau, et ils boiront.
17 Then Israel sang this song, Rise vp well, sing ye vnto it.
Alors, Israël chanta ce cantique autour du puits: Célébrez le puits.
18 The princes digged this well, the captaines of the people digged it, euen the lawe giuer, with their staues. And from the wildernesse they came to Mattanah,
Les chefs l'ont creusé; les rois des nations, durant leur règne, tandis qu'ils étaient les maîtres, l'ont revêtu de pierres de taille. Après cela, le peuple d'Israël alla du puits à Manthanaïn;
19 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
Ensuite, de Manthanaïn à Nahaliel, de Nahaliel à Bamoth;
20 And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the plaine of Moab, to the top of Pisgah that looketh toward Ieshimon.
De Bamoth à Janin, en la plaine de Moab, que l'on voit de la cime du roc escarpé regardant le désert.
21 Then Israel sent messengers vnto Sihon, King of the Amorites, saying,
Alors, Moïse envoya les anciens à Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, avec des paroles pacifiques, disant:
22 Let me goe through thy land: we wil not turne aside into the fieldes, nor into the vineyardes, neither drinke of the waters of ye welles: we will goe by the kings way, vntill we be past thy countrey.
Nous passerons par ton territoire et nous suivrons la route; nous ne nous écarterons ni dans les champs, ni dans les vignes; nous ne boirons point d'eau de ton puits; nous suivrons le grand chemin jusqu'à ce que nous ayons dépassé tes limites.
23 But Sihon gaue Israel no licence to passe through his countrey, but Sihon assembled all his people, and went out against Israel into the wildernesse: and he came to Iahoz, and fought against Israel.
Mais Séhon ne permit point à Israël de franchir ses frontières; il rassembla tout son peuple, et il sortit pour se ranger en bataille devant Israël, dans le désert; il vint à Jasa, et il se rangea en bataille devant Israël.
24 But Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and conquered his land, from Arnon vnto Iabok, euen vnto ye children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
Israël le vainquit avec grand carnage, et se rendit maître de son territoire depuis Arnon jusqu'à Jéboc, sur les frontières des fils d'Ammon, car Jazer est ville frontière des Ammonites.
25 And Israel tooke al these cities, and dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites in Heshbon and in all the villages thereof.
Israël prit toutes ses villes, et Israël habita toutes les villes des Amorrhéens, Esebon et ses dépendances.
26 For Heshbon was the citie of Sihon the king of the Amorites, which had fought beforetime against the king of the Moabites, and had taken al his land out of his hand, euen vnto Arnon.
Car Esebon était la ville de Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens; il avait d'abord fait la guerre au roi de Moab, et il avait pris tout son territoire depuis Aroer jusqu'à l'Arnon.
27 Wherefore they that speake in prouerbes, say, Come to Heshbon, let the citie of Sihon bee built and repaired:
C'est pourquoi on dit en proverbe: Venez en Esebon, où a été bâtie et peuplée la ville de Séhon.
28 For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, and a flame from the citie of Sihon, and hath consumed Ar of the Moabites, and the lords of Bamoth in Arnon.
Car le feu est sorti d'Esebon, c'était la flamme de la guerre de Séhon, et elle a dévoré jusqu'à Moab, elle a dévoré les colonnes d'Arnon.
29 Wo be to thee, Moab: O people of Chemosh, thou art vndone: he hath suffered his sonnes to be pursued, and his daughters to be in captiuitie to Sihon the king of the Amorites.
Malheur à toi, Moab; tu as péri, peuple de Chamos; leurs fils se sont vendus pour vivre, et leurs filles sont captives du roi des Amorrhéens Séhon.
30 Their empire also is lost from Heshbon vnto Dibon, and wee haue destroyed them vnto Nophah, which reacheth vnto Medeba.
Leur race est à jamais détruite d'Esebon à Dibon; et les femmes ont encore allumé le feu dans Moab.
31 Thus Israel dwelt in the lande of the Amorites.
Or, Israël occupa toutes les villes des Amorrhéens.
32 And Moses sent to searche out Iaazer, and they tooke the townes belonging thereto, and rooted out the Amorites that were there.
Moïse envoya reconnaître Jazer; ils la prirent avec ses bourgs, et ils chassèrent les Amorrhéens qui l'habitaient.
33 And they turned and went vp toward Bashan: and Og the King of Bashan came out against them, hee, and all his people, to fight at Edrei.
A leur retour, ils prirent la route qui conduit à Basan, et Og, roi de Basan, sortit à leur rencontre avec tout son peuple, pour combattre en Edraï.
34 Then the Lord said vnto Moses, Feare him not: for I haue deliuered him into thine hand and all his people, and his land: and thou shalt do to him as thou diddest vnto Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.
Mais le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Ne le crains pas, je l'ai livré à tes mains, lui, tout son peuple et tout son territoire; tu le traiteras comme tu as traité Sehon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui demeurait en Esebon.
35 They smote him therefore, and his sonnes, and all his people, vntill there was none left him: so they conquered his land.
Alors, Moïse vainquit Og et ses fils, et tout son peuple; nul n'en resta vivant, et il s'empara de son territoire.
