Numbers 13
1 And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,
Et le Seigneur parla à Moïse, disant:
2 Sende thou men out to search the lande of Canaan which I giue vnto the children of Israel: of euery tribe of their fathers shall ye sende a man, such as are all rulers among them.
Envoie devant toi des hommes; qu'ils reconnaissent la terre de Chanaan que je donne aux fils d'Israël afin qu'ils s'y établissent; envoie un homme par tribu, par famille paternelle; prends-le parmi les princes.
3 Then Moses sent them out of the wildernesse of Paran at the commandement of the Lord: all those men were heades of the children of Israel.
Et, selon l'ordre du Seigneur, Moïse fit partir du désert de Pharan des hommes tous princes des fils d'Israël.
4 Also their names are these: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the sonne of Zaccur:
Et voici leurs noms: De la tribu de Ruben, Samuel, fils de Zachur;
5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the sonne of Hori:
De la tribu de Siméon, Saphat, fils de Suri;
6 Of the tribe of Iudah, Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh:
De la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Jéphoné;
7 Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the sonne of Ioseph:
De la tribu d'Issachar, Ilaal, fils de Joseph;
8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the sone of Nun:
De la tribu d'Ephraïm, Osée, fils de Nau;
9 Of the tribe of Beniamin, Palti the sonne of Raphu:
De la tribu de Benjamin, Phalti, fils de Raphu;
10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the sone of Sodi:
De la tribu de Zabulon, Gudiel, fils de Sudi;
11 Of the tribe of Ioseph, to wit, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the sonne of Susi:
De la tribu de Manassé, fils de Joseph, Gaddi, fils de Susi;
12 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the sonne of Gemalli:
De la tribu de Dan, Amiel, fils de Gamali;
13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the sonne of Michael:
De la tribu d'Aser, Sathur, fils de Michel;
14 Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the sonne of Vophsi:
De la tribu de Nephthali, Nabi, fils de Sabi;
15 Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the sonne of Machi.
De la tribu de Gad, Gudiel, fils de Machi.
16 These are the names of the men, which Moses sent to spie out the lande: and Moses called ye name of Oshea the sonne of Nun, Iehoshua.
Tels sont les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya reconnaître la terre promise; or, Moïse avait donné à Osée, fils de Nau, le surnom de Josué.
17 So Moses sent them to spie out the lande of Canaan, and said vnto them, Go vp this way toward the South, and go vp into the moutaines,
Moïse les envoya reconnaître la terre de Chanaan, et il leur dit: Traversez ce désert et montez sur la colline;
18 And consider the land what it is, and the people that dwel therein, whether they be strong or weake, either fewe or many,
Vous verrez ce qu'est cette terre; quel est le peuple qui l'habite, s'il est puissant ou faible, s'ils sont peu ou beaucoup.
19 Also what the lande is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad: and what cities they be, that they dwell in, whether they dwell in tents, or in walled townes:
Vous verrez aussi ce qu'est la terre en laquelle ils demeurent, si elle est bonne ou mauvaise; l'état des villes qu'ils habitent, si elles sont ouvertes ou entourées de remparts;
20 And what the land is: whether it be fat or leane, whether there be trees therein, or not. And be of good courage, and bring of the fruite of the lande (for then was the time of the first ripe grapes)
Si la terre est grasse ou stérile, si elle produit ou non des arbres; vous ferez plus, vous rapporterez des fruits de cette terre; or, on était aux jours du printemps qui précèdent la maturité de la grappe.
21 So they went vp, and searched out the lande, from the wildernesse of Zin vnto Rehob, to go to Hamath,
Et ils marchèrent en explorant la terre depuis le désert de Sin, jusqu'à Robob à l'entrée d'Emath.
22 And they ascended toward the South, and came vnto Hebron, where were Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the sonnes of Anak. And Hebron was built seuen yeere before Zoan in Egypt.
Ils montèrent le long du désert, et ils poussèrent jusqu'à Hébron, où résidaient Achiman, Sessi et Thelami, issus d'Enac; Hébron avait été fondée sept ans avant Tanis d'Egypte.
23 Then they came to the riuer of Eshcol, and cut downe thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it vpon a barre betweene two, and brought of the pomegranates and of the figges.
Arrivés au vallon de la Grappe, ils l'explorèrent; ils y prirent un rameau avec sa grappe et ils remportèrent sur des leviers; ils cueillirent aussi des grenades et des figues.
24 That place was called the riuer Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes, which the children of Israel cut downe thence.
Et ils nommèrent ce lieu vallon de la Grappe, à cause de celle qu'ils y avaient coupée.
25 Then after fourtie dayes, they turned againe from searching of the land.
Ils revinrent ensuite après avoir exploré la terre pendant quarante jours.
26 And they went and came to Moses and to Aaron and vnto al the Congregation of the children of Israel, in the wildernesse of Paran, to Kadesh, and brought to the, and to all the Congregation tydings, and shewed them the fruite of the lande.
Et, ayant marché, ils rejoignirent Aaron et Moïse, et toute la synagogue des fils d'Israël, dans le désert de Pharan-Cadès; ils rendirent compte de leur voyage à eux et à toute la synagogue, et ils montrèrent les fruits de la terre promise.
27 And they tolde him, and saide, We came vnto the land whither thou hast sent vs, and surely it floweth with milke and honie: and here is of the fruite of it.
Et, s'adressant à Moïse, ils dirent: Nous sommes allés en la terre où tu nous as envoyés; c'est une terre où coulent le lait et le miel, et voilà ses fruits.
28 Neuerthelesse the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled and exceeding great: and moreouer, we sawe the sonnes of Anak there.
Mais que la nation qui l'habite est vaillante! Combien il y a de villes fortes entourées de superbes remparts! Nous y avons vu les enfants d'Enac.
29 The Amalekites dwell in the South countrey, and the Hittites, and the Iebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountaines, and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Iorden.
Amalec demeure au midi de cette terre; l'Hettéen, et le Jébuséen, et l'Amorrhéen, habitent la région montagneuse; le Chananéen occupe les rives de la mer Morte et du Jourdain.
30 Then Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and saide, Let vs go vp at once, and possesse it: for vndoubtedly we shall ouercome it.
Et Caleb fit taire le peuple qui entourait Moïse, et il dit: N'importe, nous marcherons et nous nous partagerons cette terre; nous sommes assez forts pour prévaloir contre eux.
31 But the men, that went vp with him, saide, we be not able to goe vp against the people: for they are stronger then we.
Mais ses compagnons disaient: N'y allons pas, nous ne pourrons vaincre ces peuples, ils sont plus puissants que nous.
32 So they brought vp an euill report of the land which they had searched for the children of Israel, saying, The lande which we haue gone through to search it out, is a land that eateth vp the inhabitants thereof: for all the people that we sawe in it, are men of great stature.
Ainsi ils inspirèrent aux enfants d'Israël la crainte de la terre qu'ils avaient explorée, et ils dirent: La terre où nous avons passé pour la reconnaître, dévore ceux qui s'y établissent; le peuple que nous y avons trouvé est d'une très-grande taille.
33 For there we sawe gyants, the sonnes of Anak, which come of the gyants, so that we seemed in our sight like grashoppers: and so wee were in their sight.
Nous y avons vu des géants, auprès desquels nous étions comme des sauterelles; voilà ce que nous étions auprès d'eux.
