Nehemiah 9
1 In the foure and twentieth day of this moneth the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackecloth, and earth vpon them.
Au vingt-quatrième jour de ce Mois, les fils d'Israël se réunirent pour un jeûne, ayant des cendres sur la tête, et des cilices autour du corps.
2 (And they that were of the seede of Israel were separated from all the strangers) and they stoode and confessed their sinnes and the iniquities of their fathers.
Et les fils d'Israël se tinrent séparés de tout fils de l'étranger, et debout, ils confessèrent leurs péchés et les iniquités de leurs pères.
3 And they stood vp in their place and read in the booke of the Lawe of the Lord their GOD foure times on the day, and they confessed and worshipped the Lord their God foure times.
Et, chacun demeurant immobile à sa place, ils lurent dans le livre de la loi du Seigneur leur Dieu; et ils étaient là, se confessant au Seigneur, adorant le Seigneur leur Dieu.
4 Then stoode vp vpon the staires of the Leuites Ieshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cryed with a loud voyce vnto the Lord their God.
Ensuite, Josué, les fils de Cadmiel, Sechénias, fils de Sarabie, et les fils d'Honeni se levèrent sur les degrés des lévites, et invoquèrent à grands cris le Seigneur leur Dieu.
5 And the Leuites said, euen Ieshua and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodiiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah, Stande vp, and praise the Lord your God for euer, and euer, and let them praise thy glorious Name, O God, which excelleth aboue all thankesgiuing and praise.
Et les lévites Josué et Cadmiel dirent: Relevez-vous, bénissez le Seigneur notre Dieu, dans tous les siècles des siècles; que l'on bénisse, ô Seigneur, votre nom et votre gloire; que l'on vous exalte en toute bénédiction et louange.
6 Thou art Lord alone: thou hast made heauen, and the heauen of all heauens, with all their hoste, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and al that are in them, and thou preseruest them all, and the host of the heauen worshippeth thee.
Et Esdras dit: Vous êtes le seul Seigneur, vous avez créé le ciel et le ciel des cieux, et toute l'armée céleste, et la terre et tout ce qui est en elle, et les mers et tout ce qui est en elles; c'est vous qui vivifiez toutes choses, et c'est vous que les armées du ciel adorent.
7 Thou art, O Lord, the God, that hast chosen Abram, and broughtest him out of Vr in Caldea, and madest his name Abraham,
Vous êtes le Seigneur Dieu, et vous avez élu Abram, et vous l'avez amené du pays des Chaldéens, et vous lui avez donné le nom d'Abrabam.
8 And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a couenant with him, to giue vnto his seede the lande of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, and Perizzites, and Iebusites, and Girgashites, and hast performed thy wordes, because thou art iust.
Et vous avez trouvé son cœur fidèle devant vous, et vous avez fait alliance avec lui, pour donner la terre des Chananéens, des Hettéens, des Amorrhéens, des Phérézéens, des Jébuséens et des Gergéséens, à lui et à sa race: et vous avez tenu parole, parce que vous êtes juste.
9 Thou hast also considered the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the red Sea,
Et vous avez regardé l'affliction de nos pères en Égypte, et vous avez ouï leurs cris sur les bords de la mer Rouge.
10 And shewed tokens and wonders vpon Pharaoh, and on all his seruants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudely against them: therefore thou madest thee a Name, as appeareth this day.
Et vous avez donné des signes et des prodiges en Égypte, sur Pharaon, ses serviteurs, tout le peuple de sa terre, parce que vous saviez qu'ils traitaient votre peuple orgueilleusement, et vous vous êtes fait un grand nom, comme vous vous le faites encore aujourd'hui.
11 For thou didest breake vp the Sea before them, and they went through the middes of the Sea on dry lande: and those that pursued them, hast thou cast into the bottomes as a stone, in the mightie waters:
Et, devant eux, vous avez séparé la mer, et votre peuple l'a traversée à sec, et, ceux qui le poursuivaient, vous les avez jetés dans l'abîme comme une pierre dans l'eau profonde.
12 And leddest them in the day with a pillar of a cloude, and in the night with a pillar of fire to giue them light in the way that they went.
Et le jour, vous avez guidé votre peuple par une colonne de nuée, et la nuit par une colonne de feu, pour éclairer la voie qu'il devait suivre.
13 Thou camest downe also vpon mount Sinai, and spakest vnto them from heauen, and gauest them right iudgements, and true lawes, ordinances and good commandements,
Et vous êtes descendu sur le mont Sina, et, du haut du ciel, vous leur avez parlé, et vous leur avez donné des jugements droits, des lois de vérité, des commandements et des préceptes salutaires.
14 And declaredst vnto them thine holy Sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, and ordinances, and lawes, by the hande of Moses thy seruant:
Et vous leur avez fait connaître votre sabbat saint, et vous leur avez intimé par la voix de Moïse, votre serviteur, la loi, les préceptes et les commandements.
15 And gauest them bread from heauen for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rocke for their thirst: and promisedst them that they shoulde goe in, and take possession of the land: for the which thou haddest lift vp thine hand for to giue them.
Et pour aliment, vous leur avez donné du pain du ciel, et pour leur soif, vous avez fait jaillir de l'eau des rochers; et vous leur avez dit d'entrer, pour qu'elle soit leur héritage, en la terre sur laquelle vous aviez étendu la main, promettant de la leur donner.
16 But they and our fathers behaued them selues proudely, and hardened their neck, so that they hearkened not vnto thy commandements,
Mais, eux et nos pères se sont enorgueillis, et ils ont endurci leur cœur, et ils n'ont point obéi à vos commandements.
17 But refused to obey, and would not remember thy marueilous works that thou haddest done for them, but hardened their neckes, and had in their heads to returne to their bondage by their rebellion: but thou, O God of mercies, gratious and full of compassion, of long suffring and of great mercie, yet forsookest them not.
Et ils ont refusé de rien entendre, et ils n'ont pas eu mémoire de vos merveilles, que vous aviez faites pour eux; et ils ont endurci leur cœur, et ils ont songé à rentrer en la servitude d'Égypte. Et vous, ô mon Dieu, miséricordieux et compatissant, clément et magnanime, vous ne les avez pas abandonnés,
18 Moreouer, when they made them a molten calfe (and said, This is thy God that brought thee vp out of the land of Egypt) and committed great blasphemies,
Même lorsqu'ils eurent jeté en fonte un veau d'or, et qu'ils eurent dit: Voilà les dieux qui nous ont fait sortir de l'Égypte. Et ils vous ont gravement offensé.
19 Yet thou for thy great mercies forsookest them not in the wildernesse: the pillar of the cloude departed not from them by day to leade them the way, neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way whereby they should goe.
Mais vous, dans votre miséricorde infinie, vous ne les avez point abandonnés dans le désert; vous n'avez point détourné d'eux la colonne de nuée qui les guidait le jour, ni la colonne de feu qui, la nuit, éclairait leur voie.
20 Thou gauest also thy good Spirite to instruct them, and withheldest not thy MAN from their mouth, and gauest them water for their thirst.
Et vous leur avez donné votre bon esprit pour les instruire; vous n'avez point retiré la manne de leur bouche, et vous leur avez donné de l'eau en leur soif.
21 Thou didest also feede them fourtie yeres in ye wildernes: they lacked nothing: their clothes waxed not old, and their feete swelled not.
Et vous les avez nourris quarante ans dans le désert, sans les laisser manquer de rien, et leurs vêtements ne se sont point usés, et leurs pieds n'ont point été meurtris.
22 And thou gauest them kingdomes and people, and scatteredst them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon and the land of ye King of Heshbon, and the land of Og King of Bashan.
Et vous leur avez donné des royaumes, vous leur avez partagé des peuples, et ils ont possédé la terre de Séhon, roi d'Esebon, et la terre d'Og, roi de Basan.
23 And thou diddest multiplie their children, like the starres of the heauen, and broughtest them into the lande, whereof thou haddest spoken vnto their fathers, that they should goe, and possesse it.
Et vous avez multiplié leurs fils comme les étoiles du ciel, et vous les avez introduits en la terre que vous aviez promise à leurs pères.
24 So the children went in, and possessed the lande, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the lande, euen the Canaanites, and gauest them into their handes, with their Kings and the people of the lande, that they might do with them what they would.
Et ils en ont fait leur héritage, et vous avez écrasé devant eux les habitants de la terre des Chananéens, et vous avez livré à leur merci les rois et les peuples de cette terre, pour qu'ils les traitassent comme il leur plaisait.
25 And they tooke their strong cities and the fat lande, and possessed houses, full of all goods, cisternes digged out, vineyardes, and oliues, and trees for foode in abundance, and they did eate, and were filled, and became fat, and liued in pleasure through thy great goodnesse.
Ils ont donc pris des villes superbes, ils ont hérité de maisons pleines de biens, de citernes en pierres de taille, de vignes, d'oliviers, et d'une multitude d'arbres fruitiers. Et ils ont mangé, et ils se sont rassasiés, et ils se sont engraissés, et ils ont abondé en délices par votre grande bonté.
26 Yet they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy Lawe behinde their backes, and slewe thy Prophets (which protested among them to turne them vnto thee) and committed great blasphemies.
Ensuite, ils ont changé; ils se sont retirés de vous; ils ont rejeté derrière eux la loi; ils ont tué vos prophètes qui les admonestaient pour les ramener à vous. Et ils vous ont gravement offensé.
27 Therefore thou deliueredst them into the hande of their enemies that vexed them: yet in the time of their affliction, when they cryed vnto thee, thou heardest them from the heauen, and through thy great mercies thou gauest them sauiours, who saued them out of the hande of their aduersaries.
Alors, vous les avez livrés aux mains de ceux qui les opprimaient; ceux-ci les ont écrasés, et, au temps de leur affliction, ils ont crié à vous; et vous, du haut du ciel, vous les avez entendus; et, en votre grande miséricorde, vous leur avez envoyé des sauveurs, et vous les avez tirés des mains de ceux qui les opprimaient.
28 But when they had rest, they returned to doe euill before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hande of their enemies, so that they had the dominion ouer them, yet when they conuerted and cryed vnto thee, thou heardest them from heauen, and deliueredst them according to thy great mercies many times,
Mais, après s'être reposés, ils ont encore fait le mal devant vous, et vous les avez livrés aux mains de leurs ennemis qui les ont maîtrisés. Et, derechef, ils ont crié à vous; et du haut du ciel, vous les avez encore entendus; et, en votre grande miséricorde, vous les avez délivrés.
29 And protestedst among them that thou mightest bring them againe vnto thy Lawe: but they behaued them selues proudely, and hearkened not vnto thy commandements, but sinned against thy iudgements (which a man should doe and liue in them) and pulled away the shoulder, and were stiffenecked, and woulde not heare.
Et vous les avez admonestés pour qu'ils se convertissent à votre loi; mais ils ne nous ont point écouté, et ils ont péché contre vos commandements et vos jugements, par lesquels, en les faisant, l'homme vivra. Et ils ont tourné le dos, et ils ont endurci leur cœur, et ils ne vous ont pas écouté.
30 Yet thou diddest forbeare them many yeeres, and protestedst among them by thy Spirite, euen by the hande of thy Prophets, but they woulde not heare: therefore gauest thou them into the hande of the people of the lands.
Vous avez différé avec eux bien des années, et vous les avez admonestés par votre esprit, par la voix de vos prophètes, et ils ne vous ont point écouté; enfin, vous les avez livrés aux peuples de la terre.
31 Yet for thy great mercies thou hast not consumed them, neither forsaken them: for thou art a gracious and mercifull God.
Mais, en votre grande miséricorde, vous ne les avez point anéantis, vous ne les avez point abandonnés; car, vous êtes fort, et compatissant, et miséricordieux.
32 Nowe therefore our God, thou great God, mightie and terrible, that keepest couenant and mercie, let not all the affliction that hath come vnto vs, seeme a litle before thee, that is, to our Kings, to our princes, and to our Priests, and to our Prophets, and to our fathers, and to all thy people since the time of the Kings of Asshur vnto this day.
Et maintenant, ô notre Dieu, Dieu fort, grand, puissant et redoutable, qui gardez votre alliance et votre miséricorde, ne tenez pas pour peu de chose toutes les souffrances qui ont atteint nous, nos rois, nos princes, nos prêtres, nos prophètes, nos pères et tout le peuple, depuis les jours du roi d'Assyrie, jusqu'à ce jour.
33 Surely thou art iust in all that is come vpon vs: for thou hast dealt truely, but we haue done wickedly.
Vous avez été juste en tout ce qui nous est advenu, car vous avez agi selon la vérité, et nous, nous avons péché;
34 And our kings and our princes, our Priests and our fathers haue not done thy Lawe, nor regarded thy commandements nor thy protestations, wherewith thou hast protested among them.
Nos rois, nos princes, nos prêtres, nos pères, n'ont pas observé votre loi; ils n'ont pas été attentifs à vos commandements, ni à vos témoignages que vous leur avez notifiés.
35 And they haue not serued thee in their kingdome, and in thy great goodnesse that thou shewedst vnto them, and in the large and fat lande which thou diddest set before them, and haue not conuerted from their euill workes.
Et ils ne vous ont point servi dans votre royaume, au milieu de ces marques de votre grande bonté que vous leur avez données, dans cette terre vaste et grasse que vous avez fait apparaître devant eux, et ils ne se sont point détournés de leurs habitudes criminelles.
36 Beholde, we are seruants this day, and the lande that thou gauest vnto our fathers, to eate the fruite thereof, and the goodnesse thereof, beholde, we are seruants therein.
Et voilà qu'aujourd'hui nous sommes esclaves, en cette terre que vous avez donnée à nos pères, pour manger ses fruits et ses bonnes choses; voilà que nous sommes esclaves en elle.
37 And it yeeldeth much fruit vnto the kings whom thou hast set ouer vs, because of our sinnes: and they haue dominion ouer our bodyes and ouer our cattell at their pleasure, and we are in great affliction.
Et ses fruits sont abondants pour les rois que vous avez mis sur nous en punition de nos péchés; ils ont pouvoir sur nos corps et sur nos troupeaux, à leur gré, et nous sommes dans une grande affliction.
38 Now because of all this we make a sure couenant, and write it, and our princes, our Leuites and our Priestes seale vnto it.
Et, à cause de tout cela, nous vous promettons alliance et nous l'écrivons, et nos princes, et nos lévites, et nos prêtres y mettent leur sceau.
