Nehemiah 5
1 Nowe there was a great crie of the people, and of their wiues against their brethren the Iewes.
Or il y eut un grand cri du peuple et de leurs femmes, contre les Juifs leurs frères.
2 For there were that said, We, our sonnes and our daughters are many, therefore we take vp corne, that we may eate and liue.
Car il y en avait qui disaient: Que plusieurs d'entre nous [engagent] leurs fils et leurs filles, pour prendre du froment, afin que nous mangions, et que nous vivions.
3 And there were that saide, We must gage our landes, and our vineyardes, and our houses, and take vp corne for the famine.
Et il y en avait d'autres qui disaient: nous engageons nos champs, et nos vignes, et nos maisons, pour prendre du froment contre la famine.
4 There were also that said, We haue borowed money for the Kings tribute vpon our landes and our vineyardes.
Il y en avait aussi qui disaient: nous empruntons de l'argent pour la taille du Roi, sur nos champs et sur nos vignes.
5 And nowe our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, and our sonnes as their sonnes: and lo, we bring into subiection our sonnes and our daughters, as seruants, and there be of our daughters nowe in subiection, and there is no power in our handes: for other men haue our landes and our vineyardes.
Toutefois notre chair est comme la chair de nos frères, et nos fils [sont] comme leurs fils; et voici, nous assujettissons nos fils et nos filles pour être esclaves; et quelques-unes de nos filles sont déjà assujetties, et ne sont plus en notre pouvoir; et nos champs et nos vignes sont à d'autres.
6 Then was I very angrie when I heard their crie and these wordes.
Or je fus fort en colère quand j'eus entendu leur cri et ces paroles-là.
7 And I thought in my minde, and I rebuked the princes, and the rulers, and saide vnto them, You lay burthens euery one vpon his brethren: and I set a great assemblie against them,
Et je consultai en moi-même; puis je censurai les principaux et les magistrats, et je leur dis: Vous exigez rigoureusement ce que chacun de vous a imposé à son frère; et je fis convoquer contre eux la grande assemblée.
8 And I said vnto them, We (according to our abilitie) haue redeemed our brethren the Iewes, which were solde vnto the heathen: and will you sell your brethren againe, or shall they be solde vnto vs? Then helde they their peace, and could not answere.
Et je leur dis: Nous avons racheté selon notre pouvoir nos frères Juifs, qui avaient été vendus aux nations, et vous vendriez vous-mêmes vos frères, ou nous seraient-ils vendus? Alors ils se turent, et ne surent que dire.
9 I said also, That which ye do, is not good. Ought ye not to walke in the feare of our God, for the reproche of the heathen our enemies?
Et je dis: Vous ne faites pas bien; ne voulez-vous pas marcher dans la crainte de notre Dieu, plutôt que d'être en opprobre aux nations qui sont nos ennemies?
10 For euen I, my brethren, and my seruants doe lende them money and corne: I pray you, let vs leaue off this burden.
Nous pourrions aussi exiger de l'argent et du froment, moi, mes frères, et mes serviteurs; [mais] quittons-leur, je vous prie, cette dette.
11 Restore, I pray you, vnto them this day their landes, their vineyardes, their oliues, and their houses, and remit the hundreth part of the siluer and of the corne, of the wine, and of the oyle that ye exact of them.
Rendez-leur, je vous prie, aujourd'hui leurs champs, leurs vignes, leurs oliviers et leurs maisons, et outre cela, le centième de l'argent, du froment, du vin, et de l'huile que vous exigez d'eux.
12 Then said they, We will restore it, and will not require it of them: we will doe as thou hast said. Then I called the Priestes, and caused them to sweare, that they shoulde doe according to this promise.
Et ils répondirent: Nous les rendrons, et nous ne leur demanderons rien; nous ferons ce que tu dis; alors j'appelai les Sacrificateurs, et je les fis jurer qu'ils le feraient [ainsi].
13 So I shooke my lappe, and said, So let God shake out euery man that wil not perfourme this promise from his house, and from his labour: euen thus let him be shaken out, and emptied. And all the Cogregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord: and the people did according to this promise.
Et je secouai mon sein, et je dis: Que Dieu secoue ainsi de sa maison et de son travail tout homme qui n'aura point mis en effet cette parole, et qu'il soit ainsi secoué et vidé. Et toute l'assemblée répondit: Amen! Et ils louèrent l'Eternel; et le peuple fit selon cette parole-là.
14 And from the time that the King gaue me charge to be gouernour in the lande of Iudah, from the twentieth yeere, euen vnto the two and thirtieth yeere of King Artahshashte, that is, twelue yeere, I, and my brethren haue not eaten the bread of the gouernour.
Et même, depuis le jour auquel [le Roi] m'avait commandé d'être leur Gouverneur au pays de Juda, qui est depuis la vingtième année jusqu'à la trente-deuxième année du Roi Artaxerxes, l'espace de douze ans, moi et mes frères, nous n'avons point pris ce qui était assigné au Gouverneur pour son plat.
15 For the former gouernours that were before me, had bene chargeable vnto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, besides fourtie shekels of siluer: yea, and their seruants bare rule ouer the people: but so did not I, because of the feare of God.
Quoique les premiers Gouverneurs qui avaient été avant moi, eussent chargé le peuple, et eussent pris d'eux du pain et du vin, outre quarante sicles d'argent, et qu'aussi leurs serviteurs eussent dominé sur le peuple; mais je n'ai point fait ainsi, à cause de la crainte de [mon] Dieu.
16 But rather I fortified a portion in the worke of this wall, and we bought no lande, and all my seruants came thither together vnto the worke.
Et même j'ai réparé une partie de cette muraille, et nous n'avons point acheté de champ, et tous mes serviteurs ont été assemblés là après le travail.
17 Moreouer there were at my table an hundreth and fiftie of the Iewes, and rulers, which came vnto vs from among the heathen that are about vs.
Et, outre cela, les Juifs et les Magistrats, au nombre de cent cinquante hommes, et ceux qui venaient vers nous des nations qui [étaient] autour de nous, étaient à ma table.
18 And there was prepared daily an oxe, and sixe chosen sheepe, and birdes were prepared for me, and within ten dayes wine for all in abundance. Yet for all this I required not the bread of the gouernour: for the bondage was grieuous vnto this people.
Et ce qu'on apprêtait chaque jour, était un bœuf, et six moutons choisis. On m'apprêtait aussi des volailles; et de dix en dix jours [on me présentait] de toute sorte de vin en abondance; et nonobstant tout cela, je n'ai point demandé le plat qui était assigné au Gouverneur; car c'eût été une rude servitude pour ce peuple.
19 Remember me, O my God, in goodnesse, according to all that I haue done for this people.
Ô mon Dieu! souviens-toi de moi en bien, [selon] tout ce que j'ai fait pour ce peuple.
