Nehemiah 5
1 Nowe there was a great crie of the people, and of their wiues against their brethren the Iewes.
Et il y eut un grand cri du peuple et de leurs femmes, contre les Juifs leurs frères.
2 For there were that said, We, our sonnes and our daughters are many, therefore we take vp corne, that we may eate and liue.
Et les uns disaient: Nous sommes en grand nombre avec nos fils et nos filles, vendons-en; puis nous achèterons du blé, et nous mangerons, et nous vivrons.
3 And there were that saide, We must gage our landes, and our vineyardes, and our houses, and take vp corne for the famine.
Et d'autres disaient: Engageons nos champs, nos vignes, nos maisons; puis, nous achèterons du blé, et nous mangerons.
4 There were also that said, We haue borowed money for the Kings tribute vpon our landes and our vineyardes.
D'autres encore disaient: Nous avons emprunté de l'argent pour les impôts du roi, sur nos champs, et nos vignes, et nos maisons.
5 And nowe our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, and our sonnes as their sonnes: and lo, we bring into subiection our sonnes and our daughters, as seruants, and there be of our daughters nowe in subiection, and there is no power in our handes: for other men haue our landes and our vineyardes.
Et maintenant, notre chair est comme la chair de nos frères; nos fils sont comme leurs fils, et nous traitons nos fils et nos filles comme des esclaves; et il y a de nos filles qui sont servantes, et nous n'avons pas le pouvoir de les racheter; car les nobles possèdent nos champs et nos vignes.
6 Then was I very angrie when I heard their crie and these wordes.
Et j'eus une grande affliction, quand j'ouïs leur clameur et ces discours;
7 And I thought in my minde, and I rebuked the princes, and the rulers, and saide vnto them, You lay burthens euery one vpon his brethren: and I set a great assemblie against them,
Et je tins conseil en mon cœur, et je combattis les nobles et les princes, et je leur dis: Un homme peut-il demander à son frère ce que vous demandez? Et je convoquai contre eux une grande assemblée.
8 And I said vnto them, We (according to our abilitie) haue redeemed our brethren the Iewes, which were solde vnto the heathen: and will you sell your brethren againe, or shall they be solde vnto vs? Then helde they their peace, and could not answere.
Et je leur dis: Nous avons, de nos dons volontaires, racheté nos frères les Juifs qui avaient été vendus aux gentils, et vous vendez vos frères; mais vous seront-ils livrés? Et ils gardèrent le silence, et ils ne trouvèrent pas un mot à dire.
9 I said also, That which ye do, is not good. Ought ye not to walke in the feare of our God, for the reproche of the heathen our enemies?
Et je dis: Elle n'est pas bonne l'action que vous faites; ce n'est pas ainsi que vous vous soustrairez, par la crainte de Dieu, aux outrages des nations, vos ennemies.
10 For euen I, my brethren, and my seruants doe lende them money and corne: I pray you, let vs leaue off this burden.
Or, mes frères, mes parents et moi-même, nous leurs avons prêté de l'argent et du blé; eh bien! renonçons à rien exiger d'eux.
11 Restore, I pray you, vnto them this day their landes, their vineyardes, their oliues, and their houses, and remit the hundreth part of the siluer and of the corne, of the wine, and of the oyle that ye exact of them.
Rendez-leur dès aujourd'hui leurs champs, leurs vignes, leurs oliviers et leurs maisons; et apportez-leur du blé, du vin et de l'huile pour prix de l'argent.
12 Then said they, We will restore it, and will not require it of them: we will doe as thou hast said. Then I called the Priestes, and caused them to sweare, that they shoulde doe according to this promise.
Et ils dirent: Nous rendrons tout; nous ne leur demanderons rien, et nous ferons ce que tu dis. Et j'appelai les prêtres, et je les adjurai de faire selon cette parole.
13 So I shooke my lappe, and said, So let God shake out euery man that wil not perfourme this promise from his house, and from his labour: euen thus let him be shaken out, and emptied. And all the Cogregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord: and the people did according to this promise.
Et je secouai mon manteau, et je dis: Que Dieu ainsi secoue hors de sa maison et de son jardin tout homme qui n'accomplira pas cette parole; que cet homme soit ainsi secoué et vide. Et toute l'Église dit: Amen. Et ils louèrent le Seigneur, et le peuple fit comme il avait été dit.
14 And from the time that the King gaue me charge to be gouernour in the lande of Iudah, from the twentieth yeere, euen vnto the two and thirtieth yeere of King Artahshashte, that is, twelue yeere, I, and my brethren haue not eaten the bread of the gouernour.
Depuis le jour où le roi m'avait commandé d'être leur chef en la terre de Juda: de la vingtième à la trente-deuxième année du règne d'Arthasastha, pendant douze ans, ni moi ni mes frères nous ne mangeâmes de vivres extorqués d'eux.
15 For the former gouernours that were before me, had bene chargeable vnto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, besides fourtie shekels of siluer: yea, and their seruants bare rule ouer the people: but so did not I, because of the feare of God.
Et toutes les extorsions dont mes devanciers les grevaient avant moi, leur avaient enlevé jusqu'à leur dernier argent; ils leur prenaient pour le pain et le vin quarante sicles par jour; et leurs agents avaient toute autorité sur le peuple; et moi je ne fis pas ainsi, en face de la crainte de Dieu.
16 But rather I fortified a portion in the worke of this wall, and we bought no lande, and all my seruants came thither together vnto the worke.
Et, pendant la réédification des murailles, je ne leur extorquai rien, je n'achetai point de champ, non plus qu'aucun de ceux que j'avais rassemblés pour cette œuvre.
17 Moreouer there were at my table an hundreth and fiftie of the Iewes, and rulers, which came vnto vs from among the heathen that are about vs.
Et les Juifs, au nombre de cent cinquante, et ceux des gentils qui venaient d'alentour auprès de nous, mangeaient à ma table.
18 And there was prepared daily an oxe, and sixe chosen sheepe, and birdes were prepared for me, and within ten dayes wine for all in abundance. Yet for all this I required not the bread of the gouernour: for the bondage was grieuous vnto this people.
Et tous les jours on m'amenait un bœuf, six brebis de choix et un chevreau. Et, tous les dix jours, il me venait pour nous tous une ample provision de vin; et, avec tout cela, je ne pris jamais de vivres par extorsion, parce que la servitude avait été pesante pour le peuple.
19 Remember me, O my God, in goodnesse, according to all that I haue done for this people.
Souvenez-vous de moi, mon Dieu, pour mon bien, à cause de tout ce que j'ai fait en faveur de ce peuple.
