Nehemiah 2
1 Nowe in the moneth Nisan in the twentieth yere of king Artahshashte, the wine stoode before him, and I tooke vp the wine, and gaue it vnto the King. nowe I was not before time sad in his presence.
Et il arriva au mois de Nisan, la vingtième année du roi Artaxerxès, comme le vin était devant lui, que je pris le vin et le donnai au roi; et je n’avais pas été triste en sa présence.
2 And the king said vnto me, Why is thy coutenance sad, seeing thou art not sicke? this is nothing, but sorow of heart. Then was I sore afrayd,
Et le roi me dit: Pourquoi as-tu mauvais visage, et pourtant tu n’es pas malade? Cela n’est rien que de la tristesse de cœur. Alors j’eus extrêmement peur.
3 And I said to the King, God saue the King for euer: why should not my countenance be sad, when the citie and house of the sepulchres of my fathers lieth waste, and the gates thereof are deuoured with fire?
Et je dis au roi: Que le roi vive à toujours! Pourquoi mon visage ne serait-il pas triste, quand la ville, le lieu des sépulcres de mes pères, est dévastée, et que ses portes sont consumées par le feu?
4 And the King said vnto me, For what thing doest thou require? Then I prayed to the God of heauen,
Et le roi me dit: Que demandes-tu? Et je priai le Dieu des cieux;
5 And sayde vnto the King, If it please the King, and if thy seruant haue found fauour in thy sight, I desire that thou wouldest send me to Iudah vnto the city of the sepulchres of my fathers, that I may buyld it.
et je dis au roi: Si le roi le trouve bon, et si ton serviteur est agréable devant toi, qu’il m’envoie en Juda, à la ville des sépulcres de mes pères, et je la bâtirai.
6 And the King sayd vnto me, (the Queene also sitting by him) How long shall thy iourney be? and when wilt thou come againe? So it pleased the King, and he sent me, and I set him a time.
Alors le roi me dit – et la reine était assise à son côté: – Combien de temps durera ton voyage, et quand reviendras-tu? Et il plut au roi de m’envoyer, et je lui fixai un temps.
7 After I saide vnto the King, If it please the King, let them giue mee letters to the captaines beyond the Riuer, that they may conuay me ouer, till I come into Iudah,
Et je dis au roi: Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’il me donne des lettres pour les gouverneurs de l’autre côté du fleuve, pour qu’ils me fassent passer jusqu’à ce que j’arrive en Juda,
8 And letters vnto Asaph the keeper of the Kings parke, that hee may giue me timber to buylde the gates of the palace (which apperteined to the house) and for the walles of the citie, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the King gaue me according to the good hand of my God vpon me.
et une lettre pour Asaph, gardien de la forêt du roi, afin qu’il me donne du bois pour faire la charpente des portes du château fort attenant à la maison, et pour la muraille de la ville, et pour la maison dans laquelle je dois entrer. Et le roi me les donna, selon que la bonne main de mon Dieu était sur moi.
9 Then came I to the captaines beyonde the Riuer, and gaue them the Kings letters. And the King had sent captaines of the armie and horsemen with me.
Et je vins auprès des gouverneurs de l’autre côté du fleuve, et je leur donnai les lettres du roi; or le roi avait envoyé avec moi des chefs de l’armée et des cavaliers.
10 But Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah a seruant an Ammonite heard it, and it grieued them sore, that there was come a man which sought the wealth of the children of Israel.
Et quand Sanballat, le Horonite, et Tobija, le serviteur ammonite, l’apprirent, ils furent très mécontents de ce qu’un homme soit venu pour chercher le bien des fils d’Israël.
11 So I came to Ierusalem, and was there three dayes.
Et j’arrivai à Jérusalem, et je fus là trois jours.
12 And I rose in the night, I, and a fewe men with me: for I told no man, what God had put in mine heart to do at Ierusalem, and there was not a beast with me, saue the beast whereon I rode.
Et je me levai de nuit, moi et le peu d’hommes qui étaient avec moi, – et je n’avais informé personne de ce que mon Dieu m’avait mis au cœur de faire pour Jérusalem – et je n’avais pas de bête avec moi, sinon la bête que je montais.
13 And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, and came before the dragon well, and to the dung porte, and vewed the walles of Ierusalem, howe they were broken downe, and the portes thereof deuoured with the fire.
Et je sortis de nuit, par la porte de la vallée, en face de la source du chacal, vers la porte du fumier; et je considérai les murailles de Jérusalem qui étaient en ruine, et ses portes consumées par le feu.
14 Then I went foorth vnto the gate of the fountaine, and to the Kings fishpoole, and there was no rowme for the beast that was vnder me to passe.
Et je passai à la porte de la fontaine, et à l’étang du roi, et il n’y avait pas de place où puisse passer la bête qui était sous moi.
15 Then went I vp in ye night by the brooke, and viewed the wall, and turned backe, and comming backe, I entred by the gate of the valley and returned.
Et je montai de nuit par le torrent, et je considérai la muraille; et je m’en revins, et entrai par la porte de la vallée, et je m’en retournai.
16 And the rulers knewe not whither I was gone, nor what I did, neither did I as yet tell it vnto the Iewes, nor to the Priestes, nor to the noble men, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that laboured in the worke.
Or les chefs ne savaient pas où j’étais allé, ni ce que je faisais; et jusque-là je n’avais rien communiqué aux Juifs, ni aux sacrificateurs, ni aux nobles, ni aux chefs, ni aux autres qui s’occupaient de l’œuvre.
17 Afterward I said vnto them, Ye see the miserie that we are in, how Ierusalem lyeth waste, and the gates thereof are burnt with fire: come and let vs buylde the wall of Ierusalem, that we be no more a reproche.
Et je leur dis: Vous voyez la misère dans laquelle nous sommes, que Jérusalem est dévastée et que ses portes sont brûlées par le feu. Venez et bâtissons la muraille de Jérusalem, afin que nous ne soyons plus dans l’opprobre.
18 Then I tolde them of the hande of my God, (which was good ouer me) and also of the Kings wordes that he had spoken vnto me. And they sayd, Let vs rise, and buyld. So they strengthened their hand to good.
Et je leur racontai comment la main de mon Dieu avait été bonne sur moi, et aussi les paroles du roi qu’il m’avait dites. Et ils dirent: Levons-nous et bâtissons. Et ils fortifièrent leurs mains pour bien faire.
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the seruant an Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian heard it, they mocked vs and despised vs, and said, What a thing is this that ye doe? Will ye rebell against the King?
Et quand Sanballat, le Horonite, et Tobija, le serviteur ammonite, et Guéshem, l’Arabe, l’apprirent, ils se moquèrent de nous et nous méprisèrent, et ils dirent: Qu’est-ce que vous faites là? Voulez-vous vous révolter contre le roi?
20 Then answered I them, and sayd to them, The God of heauen, he will prosper vs, and we his seruants will rise vp and buylde: but as for you, ye haue no portion nor right, nor memoriall in Ierusalem.
Et je leur répondis et je leur dis: Le Dieu des cieux, lui, nous fera prospérer, et nous, ses serviteurs, nous nous lèverons et nous bâtirons; mais vous, vous n’avez ni part, ni droit, ni souvenir à Jérusalem.
