Matthew 14
1 At that time Herod the Tetrarche heard of the fame of Iesus,
En ce temps-là, Hérode le Tétrarque apprit ce qui se publiait de Jésus.
2 And sayde vnto his seruaunts, This is that Iohn Baptist, hee is risen againe from the deade, and therefore great woorkes are wrought by him.
Et il dit à ses serviteurs: « C’est Jean-Baptiste! Il est ressuscité des morts: voilà pourquoi des miracles s’opèrent par lui. »
3 For Herod had taken Iohn, and bounde him, and put him in prison for Herodias sake, his brother Philips wife.
Car Hérode ayant fait arrêter Jean, l’avait chargé de chaînes et jeté en prison, à cause d’Hérodiade, femme de son frère Philippe,
4 For Iohn saide vnto him, It is not lawfull for thee to haue her.
parce que Jean lui disait: « Il ne t’est pas permis de l’avoir pour femme. »
5 And when hee woulde haue put him to death, hee feared the multitude, because they counted him as a Prophet.
Volontiers il l’eût fait mourir, mais il craignait le peuple, qui regardait Jean comme un prophète.
6 But when Herods birth day was kept, the daughter of Herodias daunced before them, and pleased Herod.
Or, comme on célébrait le jour de naissance d’Hérode, la fille d’Hérodiade dansa devant les convives et plut à Hérode,
7 Wherefore he promised with an othe, that he would giue her whatsoeuer she would aske.
de sorte qu’il promit avec serment de lui donner tout ce qu’elle demanderait.
8 And shee being before instructed of her mother, sayde, Giue mee here Iohn Baptists head in a platter.
Elle, instruite d’abord par sa mère: « Donne-moi, dit-elle, ici sur un plateau, la tête de Jean-Baptiste. »
9 And the King was sorie: neuerthelesse because of the othe, and them that sate with him at the table, he commanded it to be giuen her,
Le roi fut contristé; mais à cause de son serment et de ses convives, il commanda qu’on la lui donnât,
10 And sent, and beheaded Iohn in the prison.
et il envoya décapiter Jean dans sa prison.
11 And his head was brought in a platter, and giuen to the maide, and shee brought it vnto her mother.
Et la tête, apportée sur un plateau, fut donnée à la jeune fille, qui la porta à sa mère.
12 And his disciples came, and tooke vp the bodie, and buried it, and went, and tolde Iesus.
Les disciples de Jean vinrent prendre le corps et lui donnèrent la sépulture; puis ils allèrent en informer Jésus.
13 And when Iesus heard it, hee departed thence by shippe into a desert place apart. And when the multitude had heard it, they followed him on foote out of the cities.
Jésus l’ayant appris, partit de là dans une barque et se retira à l’écart, dans un lieu solitaire; mais le peuple le sut, et le suivit à pied des villes voisines.
14 And Iesus went foorth and sawe a great multitude, and was mooued with compassion toward them, and he healed their sicke.
Quand il débarqua, il vit une grande foule, et il en eut compassion, et il guérit leurs malades.
15 And when euen was come, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desart place, and the time is alreadie past: let the multitude depart, that they may goe into the townes, and bye them vitailes.
Sur le soir, ses disciples s’approchèrent de lui en disant: « Ce lieu est désert, et déjà l’heure est avancée; renvoyez cette foule, afin qu’ils aillent dans les villages s’acheter des vivres. »
16 But Iesus saide to them, They haue no neede to goe away: giue yee them to eate.
Mais Jésus leur dit: « Ils n’ont pas besoin de s’en aller; donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. »
17 Then saide they vnto him, Wee haue here but fiue loaues, and two fishes.
Ils lui répondirent: « Nous n’avons ici que cinq pains et deux poissons. »
18 And he saide, Bring them hither to me.
« Apportez-les-moi ici, « leur dit-il.
19 And hee commanded the multitude to sit downe on the grasse, and tooke the fiue loaues and the two fishes, and looked vp to heauen and blessed, and brake, and gaue the loaues to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
Après avoir fait asseoir cette multitude sur l’herbe, il prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons, et levant les yeux au ciel, il prononça une bénédiction; puis, rompant les pains, il les donna a ses disciples, et les disciples les donnèrent au peuple.
20 And they did all eate, and were sufficed, and they tooke vp of the fragments that remained, twelue baskets full.
Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés, et l’on emporta douze corbeilles pleines des morceaux qui restaient.
21 And they that had eaten, were about fiue thousande men, beside women and litle children.
Or, le nombre de ceux qui avaient mangé était environ de cinq mille hommes, sans les femmes et les enfants.
22 And straightway Iesus compelled his disciples to enter into a shippe, and to goe ouer before him, while he sent the multitude away.
Aussitôt après, Jésus obligea ses disciples à monter dans la barque et à passer avant lui sur le bord opposé du lac, pendant qu’il renverrait la foule.
23 And assoone as hee had sent the multitude away, he went vp into a moutaine alone to pray: and when the euening was come, hee was there alone.
Quand il l’eut renvoyée, il monta sur la montagne pour prier à l’écart; et, le soir étant venu, il était là seul.
24 And the shippe was nowe in the middes of the sea, and was tossed with waues: for it was a contrarie winde.
Cependant la barque, déjà au milieu de la mer, était battue par les flots, car le vent était contraire.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night, Iesus went vnto them, walking on the sea.
À la quatrième veille de la nuit, Jésus alla vers ses disciples, en marchant sur la mer.
26 And when his disciples sawe him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit, and cried out for feare.
Eux, le voyant marcher sur la mer, furent troublés, et dirent: « C’est un fantôme, « et ils poussèrent des cris de frayeur.
27 But straight way Iesus spake vnto them, saying, Be of good comfort, It is I: be not afraide.
Jésus leur parla aussitôt: « Ayez confiance, dit-il, c’est moi, ne craignez point. »
28 Then Peter answered him, and saide, Master, if it be thou, bid me come vnto thee on the water.
Pierre prenant la parole: « Seigneur, dit-il, si c’est vous, ordonnez que j’aille à vous sur les eaux. »
29 And he saide, Come. And when Peter was come downe out of the shippe, he walked on the water, to goe to Iesus.
Il lui dit: « Viens; » et Pierre étant sorti de la barque marchait sur les eaux pour aller à Jésus.
30 But when he sawe a mightie winde, he was afraide: and as he began to sinke, he cried, saying, Master, saue me.
Mais voyant la violence du vent, il eut peur, et comme il commençait à enfoncer, il cria: « Seigneur, sauvez-moi! »
31 So immediatly Iesus stretched foorth his hande, and caught him, and saide to him, O thou of litle faith, wherefore diddest thou doubt?
Aussitôt Jésus étendant la main le saisit et lui dit: « Homme de peu de foi, pourquoi as-tu douté? »
32 And assoone as they were come into the ship, the winde ceased.
Et lorsqu’ils furent montés dans la barque, le vent s’apaisa.
33 Then they that were in the ship, came and worshipped him, saying, Of a trueth thou art the Sonne of God.
Alors ceux qui étaient dans la barque, vinrent se prosterner devant lui en disant: « Vous êtes vraiment le Fils de Dieu. »
34 And when they were come ouer, they came into the land of Gennezaret.
Ayant traversé le lac, ils abordèrent à la terre de Génésareth.
35 And when the men of that place knewe him, they sent out into all that countrey rounde about, and brought vnto him all that were sicke,
Les gens de l’endroit, l’ayant reconnu, envoyèrent des messagers dans tous les environs, et on lui amena tous les malades.
36 And besought him, that they might touch the hemme of his garment onely: and as many as touched it, were made whole.
Et ils le priaient de leur laisser seulement toucher la houppe de son manteau, et tous ceux qui la touchèrent furent guéris.
