Judges 21
1 Moreouer, the men of Israel sware in Mizpeh, saying, None of vs shall giue his daughter vnto the Beniamites to wyfe.
Les enfants d’Israël jurèrent aussi à Maspha, et dirent: Nul de nous ne donnera aux enfants de Benjamin de ses filles pour femmes.
2 And the people came vnto ye house of God and abode there till euen before God, and lift vp their voyces, and wept with great lamentation,
Et ils vinrent tous à la maison du Dieu, à Silo, et, assis en sa présence jusqu’au soir, ils commencèrent à pleurer avec de grands cris, disant:
3 And sayde, O Lord God of Israel, why is this come to passe in Israel, that this day one tribe of Israel should want?
Pourquoi, Seigneur Dieu d’Israël, est-il arrivé dans votre peuple ce malheur, qu’aujourd’hui une tribu ait été retranchée, au milieu de nous?
4 And on the morow the people rose vp and made there an altar, and offred burnt offrings and peace offrings.
Mais le jour suivant, se levant au point du jour, ils construisirent un autel, ils y offrirent des holocaustes et des victimes pacifiques, et ils dirent:
5 Then the children of Israel said, Who is he among all the tribes of Israel, that came not vp with the Congregation vnto the Lord? for they had made a great othe concerning him that came not vp to the Lord to Mizpeh, saying, Let him die the death.
Qui d’entre toutes les tribus d’Israël n’est pas monté avec l’armée du Seigneur? Car ils s’étaient engagés par un grand serment, lorsqu’ils étaient à Maspha, de tuer ceux qui y auraient manqué.
6 And the children of Israel were sory for Beniamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
Et touchés de repentir par rapport à leur frère Benjamin, les Israélites commencèrent à dire: Une tribu a été retranchée d’Israël.
7 How shall we do for wiues to them that remaine, seeing we haue sworne by the Lord, that we will not giue them of our daughters to wiues?
D’où prendront-ils des femmes? Car tous ensemble nous avons juré que nous ne leur donnerions point nos filles.
8 Also they saide, Is there any of the tribes of Israel that came not vp to Mizpeh to the Lord? and beholde, there came none of Iabesh Gilead vnto the hoste and to the Congregation.
C’est pourquoi ils dirent: Qui est celui d’entre toutes les tribus d’Israël, qui n’est pas monté vers le Seigneur à Maspha? Et voilà que les habitants de Jabès-Galaad se trouvèrent n’avoir pas été avec l’armée.
9 For when the people were vewed; beholde, none of the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead were there.
(Dans le temps même que les enfants d’Israël étaient à Silo, nul d’eux ne s’y trouva).
10 Therefore the Congregation sent thither twelue thousande men of the most valiant, and commanded them, saying, Goe, and smite the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, both women, and children.
C’est pourquoi ils envoyèrent dix mille hommes très forts, et ils leur ordonnèrent, disant: Allez, et frappez les habitants de Jabès-Galaad du tranchant du glaive, tant les femmes que leurs petits enfants.
11 And this is it that ye shall do: ye shall vtterly destroye all the males and all the women that haue lien by men.
Et voici ce que vous devrez observer: Tuez tout ce qui est du sexe masculin, et les femmes qui ont connu des hommes; mais les vierges, réservez-les.
12 And they found among the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead foure hundreth maides, virgins that had knowne no man by lying with any male: and they brought them vnto the hoste to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
Et il se trouva à Jabès-Galaad quatre cents vierges qui n’avaient pas connu de lit d’homme, et ils les emmenèrent au camp à Silo, dans la terre de Chanaan.
13 Then the whole Congregation sent and spake with the children of Beniamin that were in the rocke of Rimmon, and called peaceably vnto them:
Ils envoyèrent ensuite des messagers aux enfants de Benjamin, qui étaient au rocher de Remmon, et ils leur ordonnèrent de les recevoir en paix.
14 And Beniamin came againe at that time, and they gaue them wiues which they had saued aliue of the women of Iabesh Gilead: but they had not so ynough for them.
Et les enfants de Benjamin vinrent en ce temps-là, et on leur donna pour femmes des filles de Jabès-Galaad; mais on n’en trouva point d’autres qu’on pût leur donner de la même manière.
15 And the people were sorie for Beniamin, because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
Et tout Israël éprouva une grande douleur, et fit pénitence du meurtre d’une des tribus d’Israël.
16 Therefore the Elders of the Congregation said, How shall we doe for wiues to the remnant? for the women of Beniamin are destroyed.
Et les anciens dirent: Que ferons-nous pour les autres qui n’ont pas reçu de femmes? Toutes les femmes en Benjamin sont tombées à la fois,
17 And they saide, there must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Beniamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
Et nous devons avec un grand soin et un grand zèle, pourvoir à ce qu’une des tribus d’Israël ne soit pas détruite.
18 Howbeit we may not giue them wiues of our daughters: for the childre of Israel had sworne, saying, Cursed be he that giueth a wise to Beniamin.
Cependant nous ne pouvons leur donner nos filles, liés par le serment et la malédiction dans laquelle nous avons dit: Maudit celui qui donnera de ses filles pour femmes à Benjamin!
19 Therefore they said, Beholde, there is a feast of the Lord euery yere in Shiloh in a place, which is on the Northside of Beth-el, and on the Eastside of the way that goeth vp from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the South of Lebonah.
Ils prirent donc cette résolution, et ils dirent: Voici que la solennité anniversaire du Seigneur est à Silo, qui est située au septentrion de la ville de Béthel, et au côté oriental de la voie qui de Béthel s’étend jusqu’à Sichem et au midi de la ville de Lébona.
20 Therefore they commanded the children of Beniamin, saying, Goe, and lye in waite in the vineyardes.
Et ils ordonnèrent aux enfants de Benjamin, et dirent: Allez, et cachez-vous dans les vignes.
21 And when ye see that the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catche you euery man a wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and goe into the land of Beniamin.
Et lorsque vous verrez les filles de Silo s’avancer pour former des danses, selon la coutume, sortez soudainement des vignes, prenez parmi elles chacun votre femme, et allez dans la terre de Benjamin.
22 And when their fathers or their brethren come vnto vs to complaine, we wil say vnto them, Haue pitie on them for our sakes, because we reserued not to eche man his wife in the warre, and because ye haue not giuen vnto them hitherto, ye haue sinned.
Et lorsque leurs pères et leurs frères viendront se plaindre de vous, et vous accuser, nous leur dirons: Ayez pitié d’eux; car ils ne les ont pas enlevées par le droit des combattants et des vainqueurs; mais quand ils ont demandé à les avoir, vous ne les avez pas données; ainsi c’est de votre côté qu’est la faute.
23 And the children of Beniamin did so, and tooke wiues of them that danced according to their nomber: which they tooke, and went away, and returned to their inheritance, and repaired the cities and dwelt in them.
Et les enfants de Benjamin firent comme il leur avait été commandé; et, selon leur nombre, chacun enleva une des filles qui formaient des danses, pour en faire sa femme; et ils s’en allèrent dans leurs possessions, rebâtissant les villes et y habitant.
24 So the children of Israel departed thence at that time, euery man to his tribe, and to his familie, and went out from thence euery man to his inheritance.
Les enfants d’Israël aussi retournèrent, selon leurs tribus et leurs familles, dans leurs tabernacles. En ces jours-là, il n’y avait point
25 In those dayes there was no King in Israel, but euery man did that which was good in his eyes.
