Judges 21
1 Moreouer, the men of Israel sware in Mizpeh, saying, None of vs shall giue his daughter vnto the Beniamites to wyfe.
Or ceux d'Israël avaient juré en Mitspa, en disant: Nul de nous ne donnera sa fille pour femme aux Benjamites.
2 And the people came vnto ye house of God and abode there till euen before God, and lift vp their voyces, and wept with great lamentation,
Puis le peuple vint à la maison du [Dieu] Fort, et ils demeurèrent là jusqu'au soir en la présence de Dieu; et ils élevèrent leurs voix, et pleurèrent amèrement,
3 And sayde, O Lord God of Israel, why is this come to passe in Israel, that this day one tribe of Israel should want?
Et dirent: Ô Eternel, Dieu d'Israël! pourquoi ceci est-il arrivé en Israël, qu'une Tribu d'Israël ait été aujourd'hui retranchée?
4 And on the morow the people rose vp and made there an altar, and offred burnt offrings and peace offrings.
Et le lendemain le peuple se leva de bon matin, et bâtit là un autel, et ils offrirent des holocaustes, et des sacrifices de prospérités.
5 Then the children of Israel said, Who is he among all the tribes of Israel, that came not vp with the Congregation vnto the Lord? for they had made a great othe concerning him that came not vp to the Lord to Mizpeh, saying, Let him die the death.
Alors les enfants d'Israël dirent: Qui est celui d'entre toutes les Tribus d'Israël qui n'est point monté à l'assemblée vers l'Eternel? Car on avait fait un grand serment contre tout homme qui ne monterait point vers l'Eternel à Mitspa, en disant: Un tel sera puni de mort.
6 And the children of Israel were sory for Beniamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
Car les enfants d'Israël se repentaient de ce qui était arrivé à Benjamin leur frère, et disaient aujourd'hui une Tribu a été retranchée d'Israël.
7 How shall we do for wiues to them that remaine, seeing we haue sworne by the Lord, that we will not giue them of our daughters to wiues?
Comment ferons-nous pour donner des femmes à ceux qui sont demeurés de reste, puisque nous avons juré par l'Eternel que nous ne leur donnerions point de nos filles pour femmes?
8 Also they saide, Is there any of the tribes of Israel that came not vp to Mizpeh to the Lord? and beholde, there came none of Iabesh Gilead vnto the hoste and to the Congregation.
Ils dirent donc: Y a-t-il quelqu'un d'entre les Tribus d'Israël qui ne soit point monté vers l'Eternel à Mitspa? Or voici, aucun homme de Jabès de Galaad n'était venu au camp, à l'assemblée.
9 For when the people were vewed; beholde, none of the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead were there.
Car quand on fit le dénombrement du peuple, voici, il ne s'était trouvé aucun des habitants de Jabès de Galaad.
10 Therefore the Congregation sent thither twelue thousande men of the most valiant, and commanded them, saying, Goe, and smite the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, both women, and children.
C'est pourquoi l'assemblée y envoya douze mille hommes des plus vaillants, et leur commanda en disant: Allez, et frappez les habitants de Jabès de Galaad au tranchant de l'épée, tant les femmes que les petits enfants.
11 And this is it that ye shall do: ye shall vtterly destroye all the males and all the women that haue lien by men.
Voici donc ce que vous ferez: Vous exterminerez à la façon de l'interdit tout mâle, et toute femme qui aura eu compagnie d'homme.
12 And they found among the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead foure hundreth maides, virgins that had knowne no man by lying with any male: and they brought them vnto the hoste to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
Et ils trouvèrent entre les habitants de Jabès de Galaad quatre cents filles vierges, qui n'avaient point eu compagnie d'homme; et ils les amenèrent au camp à Silo, qui est au pays de Canaan.
13 Then the whole Congregation sent and spake with the children of Beniamin that were in the rocke of Rimmon, and called peaceably vnto them:
Alors toute l'assemblée envoya pour parler aux enfants de Benjamin qui étaient au rocher de Rimmon, et pour leur offrir la paix.
14 And Beniamin came againe at that time, and they gaue them wiues which they had saued aliue of the women of Iabesh Gilead: but they had not so ynough for them.
En ce temps-là donc les Benjamites retournèrent, et on leur donna pour femmes celles qui avaient été conservées en vie d'entre les femmes de Jabès de Galaad; mais il ne s'en trouva pas [assez pour eux].
15 And the people were sorie for Beniamin, because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
Et le peuple se repentit de ce qui avait été fait à Benjamin; car l'Eternel avait fait une brèche aux Tribus d'Israël.
16 Therefore the Elders of the Congregation said, How shall we doe for wiues to the remnant? for the women of Beniamin are destroyed.
Et les Anciens de l'assemblée dirent: Comment ferons-nous pour donner des femmes à ceux qui sont demeurés de reste; car les femmes ont été exterminées d'entre les Benjamites.
17 And they saide, there must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Beniamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
Puis ils dirent: Ceux qui sont réchappés posséderont ce qui appartenait à Benjamin, afin qu'une Tribu d'Israël ne soit point effacée.
18 Howbeit we may not giue them wiues of our daughters: for the childre of Israel had sworne, saying, Cursed be he that giueth a wise to Beniamin.
Cependant nous ne leur pourrons point donner des femmes d'entre nos filles; car les enfants d'Israël ont juré, en disant: Maudit soit celui qui donnera une femme à ceux de Benjamin.
19 Therefore they said, Beholde, there is a feast of the Lord euery yere in Shiloh in a place, which is on the Northside of Beth-el, and on the Eastside of the way that goeth vp from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the South of Lebonah.
Et ils dirent: Voici la solennité ordinaire de l'Eternel est à Silo, qui est vers l'Aquilon de Bethel, et au soleil levant du chemin qui monte de Bethel à Sichem, et au midi de Lebona.
20 Therefore they commanded the children of Beniamin, saying, Goe, and lye in waite in the vineyardes.
Et ils commandèrent aux enfants de Benjamin, en disant: Allez, et mettez des gens en embuscade aux vignes.
21 And when ye see that the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catche you euery man a wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and goe into the land of Beniamin.
Et quand vous verrez que les filles de Silo sortiront pour danser avec des flûtes, alors vous sortirez des vignes, et vous ravirez pour vous chacun sa femme d'entre les filles de Silo, et vous en irez au pays de Benjamin.
22 And when their fathers or their brethren come vnto vs to complaine, we wil say vnto them, Haue pitie on them for our sakes, because we reserued not to eche man his wife in the warre, and because ye haue not giuen vnto them hitherto, ye haue sinned.
Et quand leurs pères, ou leurs frères viendront vers nous pour plaider, nous leur dirons: Ayez pitié d'eux pour l'amour de nous, puisque nous n'avons point pris femme pour [chacun d'eux] en cette guerre, et vous serez coupables si vous ne leur en donnez point en un temps comme celui-ci.
23 And the children of Beniamin did so, and tooke wiues of them that danced according to their nomber: which they tooke, and went away, and returned to their inheritance, and repaired the cities and dwelt in them.
Les enfants de Benjamin firent ainsi, et enlevèrent des femmes selon leur nombre, d'entre celles qui dansaient, lesquelles ils ravirent; puis s'en allant ils retournèrent à leur héritage, et rebâtirent des villes, et y habitèrent.
24 So the children of Israel departed thence at that time, euery man to his tribe, and to his familie, and went out from thence euery man to his inheritance.
Ainsi en ce temps-là chacun des enfants d'Israël s'en alla de là en sa Tribu, et dans sa famille, et ils se retirèrent de là chacun dans son héritage.
25 In those dayes there was no King in Israel, but euery man did that which was good in his eyes.
En ces jours-là il n'y avait point de Roi en Israël; mais chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait être droit.
