Judges 21
1 Moreouer, the men of Israel sware in Mizpeh, saying, None of vs shall giue his daughter vnto the Beniamites to wyfe.
Or, les Israélites avaient juré, à Miçpa, que nul d’entre eux ne donnerait sa fille pour épouse à un Benjamite.
2 And the people came vnto ye house of God and abode there till euen before God, and lift vp their voyces, and wept with great lamentation,
Le peuple vainqueur se rendit à Béthel, y resta jusqu’au soir en présence du Seigneur, élevant la voix et versant d’abondantes larmes.
3 And sayde, O Lord God of Israel, why is this come to passe in Israel, that this day one tribe of Israel should want?
Ils disaient: "Eternel, Dieu d’Israël! pourquoi faut-il qu’Israël ait ce malheur de se voir privé d’une tribu entière?"
4 And on the morow the people rose vp and made there an altar, and offred burnt offrings and peace offrings.
Dès le lendemain de bonne heure, le peuple bâtit là un autel, offrit des holocaustes et des rémunératoires.
5 Then the children of Israel said, Who is he among all the tribes of Israel, that came not vp with the Congregation vnto the Lord? for they had made a great othe concerning him that came not vp to the Lord to Mizpeh, saying, Let him die the death.
Puis ils se demandèrent qui d’entre les tribus d’Israël n’était pas venu à l’assemblée tenue devant l’Eternel; car un serment solennel avait menacé de mort quiconque ne serait pas venu à Miçpa devant l’Eternel.
6 And the children of Israel were sory for Beniamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
Et maintenant les enfants d’Israël s’affligeaient au sujet de Benjamin leur frère, et ils disaient: "Une tribu a été retranchée aujourd’hui d’Israël l
7 How shall we do for wiues to them that remaine, seeing we haue sworne by the Lord, that we will not giue them of our daughters to wiues?
Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, alors que nous avons juré par l’Eternel de ne pas leur permettre d’épouser nos filles?
8 Also they saide, Is there any of the tribes of Israel that came not vp to Mizpeh to the Lord? and beholde, there came none of Iabesh Gilead vnto the hoste and to the Congregation.
C’Est alors qu’ils s’informèrent si quelqu’un, parmi les tribus d’Israël, ne s’était pas rendu à Miçpa devant l’Eternel, et il se trouva que nul homme de Jabès-Galaad n’était venu au camp, dans la réunion.
9 For when the people were vewed; beholde, none of the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead were there.
En effet, le peuple avait été dénombré, et aucun des habitants de Jabès-Galaad n’y figurait.
10 Therefore the Congregation sent thither twelue thousande men of the most valiant, and commanded them, saying, Goe, and smite the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, both women, and children.
L’Assemblée y envoya donc douze mille guerriers, en leur donnant cet ordre: "Allez à Jabès-Galaad, et passez les habitants au fil de l’épée, même les femmes et les enfants,
11 And this is it that ye shall do: ye shall vtterly destroye all the males and all the women that haue lien by men.
en observant toutefois cette règle, de vouer à la mort tous les mâles et toutes les femmes ayant déjà cohabité avec un homme."
12 And they found among the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead foure hundreth maides, virgins that had knowne no man by lying with any male: and they brought them vnto the hoste to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
Or, sur les habitants de Jabès-Galaad, il se trouva quatre cents jeunes filles, encore vierges, n’ayant eu aucun contact avec un homme; et on les conduisit au camp à Silo, qui est dans le pays de Canaan.
13 Then the whole Congregation sent and spake with the children of Beniamin that were in the rocke of Rimmon, and called peaceably vnto them:
Alors toute l’assemblée envoya un message aux Benjamites réfugiés à la Roche de Rimmon et leur offrit la paix.
14 And Beniamin came againe at that time, and they gaue them wiues which they had saued aliue of the women of Iabesh Gilead: but they had not so ynough for them.
Les Benjamites revinrent aussitôt, et on leur donna les femmes qu’on avait épargnées parmi celles de Jabès-Galaad; mais il ne s’en trouva pas autant qu’il fallait.
15 And the people were sorie for Beniamin, because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
Or, le peuple était ému au sujet de Benjamin, en songeant à la brèche que le Seigneur avait faite parmi les tribus d’Israël.
16 Therefore the Elders of the Congregation said, How shall we doe for wiues to the remnant? for the women of Beniamin are destroyed.
Les anciens de la communauté dirent: "Comment pourvoirons-nous de femmes ceux qui restent encore, toute femme en Benjamin ayant été exterminée?"
17 And they saide, there must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Beniamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
Ils ajoutaient: "Ceux qui ont échappé auront l’héritage de Benjamin; il ne faut pas qu’une tribu disparaisse en Israël!
18 Howbeit we may not giue them wiues of our daughters: for the childre of Israel had sworne, saying, Cursed be he that giueth a wise to Beniamin.
Pour nous, nous ne pouvons leur donner nos filles pour femmes, puisque les enfants d’Israël ont prononcé ce serment: "Maudit qui donnerait une femme à Benjamin!"
19 Therefore they said, Beholde, there is a feast of the Lord euery yere in Shiloh in a place, which is on the Northside of Beth-el, and on the Eastside of the way that goeth vp from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the South of Lebonah.
Mais il y a, dirent-ils, une fête religieuse célébrée chaque année à Silo, sur la place qui est au nord de Béthel, à l’orient de la route qui monte de Béthel à Sichem, et au midi de Lebona."
20 Therefore they commanded the children of Beniamin, saying, Goe, and lye in waite in the vineyardes.
Ils donnèrent donc ce conseil aux Benjamites: Allez vous embusquer dans les vignes;
21 And when ye see that the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catche you euery man a wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and goe into the land of Beniamin.
et lorsque vous verrez les filles de Silo sortir pour danser en chœur, vous sortirez vous-mêmes des vignes, vous enlèverez chacun une femme parmi les filles de Silo, et vous vous en irez au pays de Benjamin.
22 And when their fathers or their brethren come vnto vs to complaine, we wil say vnto them, Haue pitie on them for our sakes, because we reserued not to eche man his wife in the warre, and because ye haue not giuen vnto them hitherto, ye haue sinned.
Que si leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent se plaindre à nous, nous leur dirons: Faites-leur grâce en notre faveur, puisque nous n’avons pu prendre une femme pour chacun lors de l’expédition; d’ailleurs, ce n’est pas vous qui les leur avez données, pour vous croire à cette heure en faute."
23 And the children of Beniamin did so, and tooke wiues of them that danced according to their nomber: which they tooke, and went away, and returned to their inheritance, and repaired the cities and dwelt in them.
Ainsi firent les enfants de Benjamin: ils enlevèrent, parmi les danseuses, un nombre de femmes égal au leur et les prirent pour épouses; puis ils s’en retournèrent dans leur territoire héréditaire, rebâtirent les villes et s’y établirent.
24 So the children of Israel departed thence at that time, euery man to his tribe, and to his familie, and went out from thence euery man to his inheritance.
Les enfants d’Israël s’en allèrent alors, chacun selon sa tribu et sa famille, et chacun s’achemina de là à son héritage.
25 In those dayes there was no King in Israel, but euery man did that which was good in his eyes.
En ce temps-là il n’y avait point de roi en Israël, et chacun faisait ce que bon lui semblait.
