Judges 19
1 Also in those dayes, when there was no king in Israel, a certaine Leuite dwelt on the side of mount Ephraim, and tooke to wife a concubine out of Beth-lehem Iudah,
Et il arriva en ces jours-là, quand il n’y avait point de roi en Israël, qu’un Lévite qui séjournait au fond de la montagne d’Éphraïm, prit une concubine de Bethléhem de Juda.
2 And his concubine played ye whore there, and went away from him vnto her fathers house to Beth-lehem Iudah, and there continued the space of foure moneths.
Et sa concubine lui étant infidèle se prostitua, et s’en alla d’avec lui à la maison de son père, à Bethléhem de Juda; et elle fut là quelque temps, quatre mois.
3 And her husband arose and went after her, to speake friendly vnto her, and to bring her againe: he had also his seruant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him vnto her fathers house, and when the yong womans father sawe him, he reioyced of his comming.
Et son mari se leva, et alla après elle pour parler à son cœur, afin de la ramener, et il avait avec lui son jeune homme et une paire d’ânes. Et elle le fit entrer dans la maison de son père; et quand le père de la jeune femme le vit, il se réjouit de le rencontrer.
4 And his father in lawe, the yong womans father reteined him: and he abode with him three dayes: so they did eate and drinke, and lodged there.
Et son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, le retint; et il demeura avec lui trois jours; et ils mangèrent et burent, et ils passèrent la nuit là.
5 And when the fourth day came, they arose earely in the morning, and he prepared to depart: then the yong womans father said vnto his sonne in lawe, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and then go your way.
Et il arriva, le quatrième jour, qu’ils se levèrent de bonne heure le matin; et, comme il se levait pour s’en aller, le père de la jeune femme dit à son gendre: Fortifie ton cœur avec une bouchée de pain, et après, vous vous en irez.
6 So they sate downe, and did eate and drinke both of them together. And the yong womans father said vnto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tary all night, and let thine heart be merie.
Et ils s’assirent, et mangèrent et burent, eux deux ensemble; et le père de la jeune femme dit à l’homme: Consens, je te prie, et passe [ici] la nuit, et que ton cœur se réjouisse.
7 And when the man rose vp to depart, his father in lawe was earnest: therefore he returned, and lodged there.
Et l’homme se leva pour s’en aller, mais son beau-père le pressa, et il revint et passa [encore] la nuit là.
8 And he arose vp earely the fifth day to depart, and the yong womans father saide, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee: and they taryed vntill after midday, and they both did eate.
Et le cinquième jour, il se leva de bonne heure le matin pour s’en aller; mais le père de la jeune femme dit: Je te prie, fortifie ton cœur. Et ils s’attardèrent jusqu’à ce que le jour baissa, et ils mangèrent eux deux.
9 Afterwarde when the man arose to depart with his concubine and his seruant, his father in lawe, the yong womans father said vnto him, Beholde nowe, the day draweth towarde euen: I pray you, tary all night: beholde, the sunne goeth to rest: lodge here, that thine heart may be merie, and to morowe get you earely vpon your way, and goe to thy tent.
Et l’homme se leva pour s’en aller, lui et sa concubine, et son serviteur. Et son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, lui dit: Tu vois que le jour faiblit, le soir approche; je vous prie, passez la nuit; voici, le jour tombe, passe ici la nuit, et que ton cœur se réjouisse; et demain vous vous lèverez de bonne heure pour [aller] votre chemin, et tu t’en iras à ta tente.
10 But the man would not tarry, but arose and departed, and came ouer against Iebus, (which is Ierusalem) and his two asses laden, and his concubine were with him.
Mais l’homme ne voulut point passer la nuit, et il se leva, et s’en alla; et il vint jusque vis-à-vis de Jébus qui est Jérusalem, et, avec lui, la paire d’ânes bâtés, et sa concubine avec lui.
11 When they were neere to Iebus, the day was sore spent, and the seruant said vnto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let vs turne into this citie of the Iebusites, and lodge all night there.
Ils étaient tout près de Jébus, et le jour avait beaucoup baissé; et le serviteur dit à son maître: Allons, je te prie, et détournons-nous vers cette ville des Jébusiens, et passons-y la nuit.
12 And his master answered him, We will not turne into the citie of strangers that are not of the children of Israel, but we will goe forth to Gibeah.
Et son maître lui dit: Nous ne nous détournerons point vers une ville des étrangers, qui n’est pas des fils d’Israël; mais nous passerons jusqu’à Guibha.
13 And he said vnto his seruant, Come, and let vs drawe neere to one of these places, that wee may lodge in Gibeah or in Ramah.
Et il dit à son serviteur: Viens, et approchons-nous d’un de ces endroits, et passons la nuit à Guibha ou à Rama.
14 So they went forward vpon their way, and the sunne went downe vpon them neere to Gibeah, which is in Beniamin.
Et ils passèrent plus avant, et marchèrent, et le soleil se coucha, comme ils étaient près de Guibha, qui est à Benjamin.
15 Then they turned thither to goe in and lodge in Gibeah: and when he came, he sate him downe in a streete of the citie: for there was no man that tooke them into his house to lodging.
Et ils se détournèrent pour entrer [et] pour passer la nuit à Guibha. Et il entra, et s’assit sur la place de la ville, et il n’y eut personne qui les reçoive dans sa maison pour passer la nuit.
16 And beholde, there came an old man from his work out of the field at euen, and the man was of mount Ephraim, but dwelt in Gibeah: and the men of the place were the children of Iemini.
Et voici, sur le soir, un vieillard venait des champs, de son travail; et l’homme était de la montagne d’Éphraïm, et séjournait à Guibha; et les hommes du lieu étaient Benjaminites.
17 And when he had lift vp his eyes, he sawe a wayfairing man in the streetes of the citie: then this olde man sayde, Whither goest thou, and whence camest thou?
Et il leva ses yeux, et vit le voyageur sur la place de la ville; et le vieillard [lui] dit: Où vas-tu, et d’où viens-tu?
18 And hee answered him, Wee came from Beth-lehem Iudah, vnto the side of Mout Ephraim: from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem Iudah, and go now to the house of the Lord: and no man receiueth mee to house,
Et il lui dit: Nous passons de Bethléhem de Juda vers le fond de la montagne d’Éphraïm; je suis de là, et je suis allé à Bethléhem de Juda, et j’ai à faire avec la maison de l’Éternel; et il n’y a personne qui me reçoive dans sa maison.
19 Although we haue straw and prouader for our asses, and also bread and wine for me and thine handmayde, and for the boy that is with thy seruant: we lacke nothing.
Et pourtant j’ai de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes, et j’ai aussi du pain et du vin pour moi et pour ta servante, et pour le jeune homme qui est avec tes serviteurs; rien ne nous manque.
20 And the olde man sayde, Peace bee with thee: as for all that thou lackest, shalt thou finde with me: onely abide not in the streete al night.
Et le vieillard lui dit: Paix te soit! Seulement, que tous tes besoins soient à ma charge; mais ne passe pas la nuit sur la place.
21 So he brought him into his house, and gaue fodder vnto the asses: and they washed their feete, and did eate and drinke.
Et il le fit entrer dans sa maison, et donna le fourrage aux ânes; et ils lavèrent leurs pieds, et mangèrent et burent.
22 And as they were making their hearts merie, beholde, the men of the citie, wicked men beset the house round about, and smote at the doore, and spake to this olde man the master of the house saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house that we may knowe him.
Comme ils faisaient bonne chère, voici, les hommes de la ville, des hommes, fils de Bélial, entourèrent la maison, frappant à la porte; et ils parlèrent au vieillard, maître de la maison, disant: Fais sortir l’homme qui est entré dans ta maison, afin que nous le connaissions.
23 And this man the master of ye house went out vnto the, and said vnto them, Nay my brethre, do not so wickedly, I pray you: seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this villenie.
Et le maître de la maison sortit vers eux, et leur dit: Non, mes frères, ne faites pas [ce] mal, je vous prie; après que cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne faites pas cette infamie.
24 Behold, here is my daughter, a virgine, and his concubine: them wil I bring out nowe, and humble them, and doe with them what seemeth you good: but to this man doe not this villenie.
Voici ma fille qui est vierge, et sa concubine: laissez-moi les faire sortir, et vous les humilierez, et vous leur ferez ce qu’il vous plaira; mais à cet homme ne faites pas cette chose infâme.
25 But the men woulde not hearken to him: therefore ye man tooke his concubine, and brought her out vnto them: and they knewe her and abused her all the night vnto the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her goe.
Mais ces gens ne voulurent pas l’écouter; et l’homme saisit sa concubine et la leur amena dehors; et ils la connurent et abusèrent d’elle toute la nuit jusqu’au matin; et ils la renvoyèrent comme l’aurore se levait.
26 So the woman came in the dawning of the day, and fell downe at the doore of the mans house where her Lord was, till the light day.
Et comme le matin arrivait, la femme vint et tomba à l’entrée de la maison de l’homme chez qui était son seigneur, [et y resta] jusqu’au jour.
27 And her lorde arose in the morning, and opened the doores of the house, and went out to goe his way, and beholde, the woman his concubine was dead at the doore of the house and her handes lay vpon the thresholde.
Et son seigneur se leva le matin, et ouvrit la porte de la maison, et sortit pour aller son chemin; et voici, la femme, sa concubine, était tombée à l’entrée de la maison, ses mains sur le seuil.
28 And hee said vnto her, Vp and let vs goe: but shee answered not. Then he tooke her vp vpon the asse, and the man rose vp, and went vnto his place.
Et il lui dit: Lève-toi, et allons-nous-en. Mais personne ne répondit. Et l’homme la prit sur son âne, et se leva et s’en alla en son lieu.
29 And whe he was come to his house, he took a knife, and laid hand on his concubine, and deuided her in pieces with her bones into twelue parts, and sent her through all quarters of Israel.
Et il entra dans sa maison, et prit le couteau, et saisit sa concubine, et la partagea selon ses os en douze morceaux, et l’envoya dans tous les confins d’Israël.
30 And all that saw it, said, There was no such thing done or seene since the time that the children of Israel came vp from the lande of Egypt vnto this day: consider the matter, consult and giue sentence.
Et il arriva que tous ceux qui virent cela, dirent: Jamais chose pareille n’a eu lieu ni ne s’est vue, depuis le jour où les fils d’Israël sont montés du pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour. Pensez à cela, prenez conseil, et parlez.
