Judges 15
1 But within a while after, in the time of wheate haruest, Samson visited his wife with a kid, saying, I wil go in to my wife into the chamber: but her father would not suffer him to goe in.
Mais peu de temps après, lorsque les jours de la moisson des blés approchaient, Samson vint, voulant voir sa femme; et il lui apporta un chevreau. Or, comme il voulait, selon la coutume, entrer dans sa chambre, son père l’empêcha, disant:
2 And her father sayde, I thought that thou hadst hated her: therefore gaue I her to thy companion. Is not her yonger sister fayrer then shee? take her, I pray thee, in stead of the other.
J’ai pensé que tu la haïssais, et c’est pour cela que je l’ai donnée à ton ami. Mais elle a une sœur qui est plus jeune et plus belle; qu’elle soit ta femme au lieu d’elle.
3 Then Samson saide vnto them, Nowe am I more blamelesse then the Philistims: therefore will I doe them displeasure.
Samson lui répondit: Dès ce jour, il n’y aura pas de faute en moi contre les Philistins, si je vous fais du mal.
4 And Samson went out, and tooke three hundreth foxes, and tooke firebrands, and turned them taile to taile, and put a firebrand in ye middes betweene two tailes.
Il alla donc, et il prit trois cents renards; il lia les queues des uns aux queues des autres, et attacha des torches au milieu.
5 And when he had set the brandes on fire, he sent them out into the standing corne of the Philistims, and burnt vp both the rickes and the standing corne with the vineyardes and oliues.
Mettant le feu aux torches, il lâcha les renards, afin qu’ils courussent çà et là. Ceux-ci allèrent dans les moissons des Philistins, lesquelles une fois embrasées, et les blés déjà amassés et ceux qui étaient encore sur pied, furent brûlés; tellement que la flamme consuma même les vignes et les plants d’oliviers.
6 Then the Philistims sayde, Who hath done this? And they answered, Samson the sonne in law of the Timnite, because hee had taken his wife, and giuen her to his companion. Then the Philistims came vp and burnt her and her father with fire.
Alors les Philistins dirent: Qui a fait cela? On leur répondit: Samson, gendre du Thamnathéen, parce que celui-ci a enlevé sa femme et l’a donnée à un autre, a fait ces choses. Alors les Philistins montèrent et brûlèrent tant la femme que son père.
7 And Samson saide vnto them, Though yee haue done this, yet wil I be auenged of you, and then I wil cease.
Samson leur dit: Quoique vous ayez fait cela, je tirerai encore de vous vengeance, et alors je demeurerai tranquille.
8 So hee smote them hippe and thigh with a mightie plague: then hee went and dwelt in the top of the rocke Etam.
Il les frappa, en effet d une plaie, en sorte que saisis de stupeur, ils mettaient la jambe sur la cuisse. Après cela, descendant, il habita dans la caverne du rocher d’Etam.
9 Then the Philistims came vp, and pitched in Iudah, and were spred abroad in Lehi.
Les Philistins montant donc dans la terre de Juda, campèrent dans ce lieu, qui, dans la suite, fut appelé Léchi, c’est-à-dire, Mâchoire, où leur armée fut dissipée.
10 And the men of Iudah sayde, Why are yee come vp vnto vs? And they answered, To binde Samson are we come vp, and to do to him as hee hath done to vs.
Des hommes de la tribu de Juda leur dirent: Pourquoi avez-vous monté contre nous? Ils répondirent: C’est pour lier Samson que nous sommes venus et pour lui rendre ce qu’il a fait contre lions.
11 Then three thousande men of Iudah went to the top of the rocke Etam, and sayde to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistims are rulers ouer vs? Wherefore then hast thou done thus vnto vs? And he answered them, As they did vnto me, so haue I done vnto them.
Il descendit donc trois mille hommes de Juda à la caverne du rocher d’Etam, et ils dirent à Samson: Tu ne sais pas que les Philistins nous commandent? Pourquoi as-tu voulu faire cela? Il leur répondit: Comme ils m’ont fait, ainsi je leur ai fait.
12 Againe they sayd vnto him, Wee are come to binde thee, and to deliuer thee into the hande of the Philistims. And Samson sayde vnto them, Sweare vnto me, that yee will not fall vpon me your selues.
C’est pour te her, reprennent-ils que nous sommes venus, et pour te livrer aux mains des Philistins. Et Samson: Jurez, leur dit-il, et promettez-moi, que vous ne me tuerez pas.
13 And they answered him, saying, No, but we will bynde thee and deliuer thee vnto their hande, but we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two newe cordes, and brought him from the rocke.
Ils répondirent: Nous ne te tuerons pas; mais nous te livrerons enchaîné, Et ils le lièrent avec deux cordes neuves, et ils l’enlevèrent du rocher d’Etam.
14 When hee came to Lehi, the Philistims shouted against him, and the Spirite of the Lord came vpon him, and the cordes that were vpon his armes, became as flaxe that was burnt with fire: for the bandes loosed from his handes.
Lorsqu’il fut arrivé au lieu de la Mâchoire et que les Philistins, vociférant, furent venus à sa rencontre, l’Esprit du Seigneur s’empara de lui; et comme le lin a coutume de se consumer à l’odeur du feu, ainsi les liens dont il avait été hé, se brisèrent et se détachèrent.
15 And he found a new iawebone of an asse, and put forth his hand, and caught it, and slewe a thousand men therewith.
Et saisissant une mâchoire d’âne, c’est-à-dire une mandibule d’âne, qu’il trouva et qui était à terre, il en tua mille hommes.
16 Then Samson sayd, With the iaw of an asse are heapes vpon heapes: with the iawe of an asse haue I slaine a thousand men.
Et il dit: Avec la mâchoire de l’âne, avec la mandibule du poulain des ânesses je les ai détruits, et j’ai frappé mille hommes.
17 And when he had left speaking, hee cast away the iawebone out of his hande, and called that place, Ramath-Lehi.
Et lorsqu’il eut fini de chanter ces paroles, il jeta de sa main la mandibule, et appela ce lieu du nom de Ramathléchi, qu’on interprète par Elévation de mâchoire.
18 And he was sore a thirst, and called on the Lord, and sayde, Thou hast giuen this great deliuerance into the hand of thy seruaunt: and nowe shall I dye for thirst, and fall into the handes of the vncircumcised?
Et pressé violemment par la soif, il cria au Seigneur, et dit: C’est vous qui avez mis dans la main de votre serviteur cette délivrance prodigieuse, et cette victoire; voici que je meurs de soif, et je tomberai entre les mains des incirconcis.
19 Then God brake the cheeke tooth, that was in the iawe, and water came thereout: and when he had drunke, his Spirit came againe, and he was reuiued: wherefore the name therof is called, Enhakkore, which is in Lehi vnto this day.
C’est pourquoi le Seigneur ouvrit la dent molaire dans la mâchoire d’âne, et il en sortit de l’eau; et Samson en ayant bu, ranima ses esprits, et reprit ses forces. C’est pour cela que jusqu’au présent jour on a appelé ce lieu du nom de Fontaine de l’invoquant sortie de la mâchoire.
20 And hee iudged Israel in the dayes of the Philistims twentie yeeres.
Et Samson jugea Israël aux jours des Philistins pendant vingt ans.
