Judges 12
1 And the me of Ephraim gathered themselues together, and went Northwarde, and saide vnto Iphtah, Wherefore wentest thou to fight against the children of Ammon, and diddest not call vs to goe with thee? we will therefore burne thine house vpon thee with fire.
Mais voilà que dans Ephraïm s’éleva une sédition; car les hommes de cette tribu passant vers l’aquilon, dirent à Jephté: Pourquoi marchant au combat contre les enfants d’Ammon, n’as-tu pas voulu nous appeler, afin que nous allassions avec toi? Aussi incendierons-nous ta maison.
2 And Iphtah said vnto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon, and when I called you, ye deliuered me not out of their handes.
Jephté leur répondit: Nous avions un grand débat moi et mon peuple Contre les enfants d’Ammon; je vous ai appelés, pour me donner du secours, et vous ne l’avez pas Voulu faire.
3 So when I sawe that ye deliuered me not, I put my life in mine hands, and went vpon the children of Ammon: so the Lord deliuered them into mine handes. Wherefore then are ye come vpon me nowe to fight against me?
Ce que voyant, j’ai mis mon âme en mes mains, j’ai passé chez les enfants d’Ammon, et le Seigneur les a livrés en mes mains. En quoi ai-je mérité que vous vous éleviez contre moi pour me faire la guerre?
4 Then Iphtah gathered all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are runnagates of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.
C’est pourquoi ayant appelé à lui tous les hommes de Galaad, il combattit contre Ephraïm: et les hommes de Galaad battirent Ephraïm, parce qu’il avait dit: Galaad est un fugitif d’Ephraïm, et il habite au milieu d’Ephraïm et de Manassé.
5 Also the Gileadites tooke the passages of Iorden before the Ephraimites, and when the Ephraimites that were escaped, saide, Let me passe, then the men of Gilead said vnto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay,
Et les Galaadites occupèrent les gués du Jourdain, par lesquels Ephraïm devait revenir; et lorsqu’il y venait quelqu’un de l’armée d’Ephraïm, fuyant, et qu’il disait: Je vous conjure de me permettre de passer, les Galaadites lui répondaient: Est-ce que tu es Ephrathéen? lequel disant: Je ne le suis pas,
6 Then said they vnto him, Say nowe Shibboleth: and he said, Sibboleth: for he could not so pronounce: then they tooke him, and slewe him at the passages of Iorden: and there fel at that time of the Ephraimites two and fourtie thousand.
Ils lui demandaient: Dis donc Schibboleth, ce qu’on interprète par Epi. Il répondait Sibboleth, ne pouvant pas exprimer épi avec la même lettre. Et aussitôt, après l’avoir saisi, on regorgeait au passage même du Jourdain. Or, il périt en ce temps quarante-deux mille hommes d’Ephraïm.
7 And Iphtah iudged Israel sixe yeere: then dyed Iphtah the Gileadite, and was buryed in one of the cities of Gilead.
Ainsi, Jephté Galaadite jugea Israël pendant six ans; et il mourut et fut enseveli dans sa ville de Galaad.
8 After him Ibzan of Beth-lehem iudged Israel,
Après lui Abésan de Bethléhem jugea Israël.
9 Who had thirtie sonnes and thirtie daughters, which he sent out, and tooke in thirtie daughters from abroade for his sonnes. and he iudged Israel seuen yeere.
Il eut trente fils et autant de filles, qu’il maria, les établissant hors de chez lui; et il reçut pour ses fils des femmes en même nombre, les admettant dans sa maison. Abésan jugea Israël pendant sept ans;
10 Then Ibzan died, and was buryed at Bethlehem.
Et il mourut et fut enseveli à Bethléhem.
11 And after him iudged Israel Elon, a Zebulonite, and he iudged Israel tenne yeere.
À Abésan succéda Ahialon Zabulonite; et il jugea Israël pendant dix ans;
12 Then Elon the Zebulonite dyed, and was buryed in Aijalon in the countrey of Zebulun.
Et il mourut et fut enseveli dans Zabulon.
13 And after him Abdon the sonne of Hillel the Pirathonite iudged Israel.
Après lui, Abdon, fils d’Illel, Pharathonite, jugea Israël;
14 And he had fourty sonnes and thirtie nephewes that rode on seuentie assecoltes: and he iudged Israel eight yeeres.
Il eut quarante fils, et d’eux trente petits-fils, qui montaient sur soixante-dix poulains d’ânesses; et il jugea Israël pendant huit ans;
15 Then dyed Abdon the sonne of Hillel the Pirathonite, and was buryed in Pirathon, in ye lande of Ephraim, in the Mount of the Amalekites.
Et il mourut et fut enseveli à Pharathon de la terre d’Ephraïm, sur la montagne d’Amalec.
