Joshua 9
1 And when all the Kings that were beyonde Iorden, in the mountaines and in the valleis, and by all the coastes of the great Sea ouer against Lebanon (as the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebusites) heard thereof,
ORA, come tutti i re ch'[erano] di qua dal Giordano, nel monte, e nella pianura, e lungo tutto il lito del mar grande, fin dirimpetto al Libano, l'Hitteo, l'Amorreo, il Cananeo, il Ferizzeo, l'Hivveo, e il Gebuseo, ebbero intese queste cose,
2 They gathered themselues together, to fight against Ioshua, and against Israel with one accord.
si adunarono tutti insieme per guerreggiar con Giosuè, e con Israele, di pari consentimento.
3 But the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Ioshua had done vnto Iericho, and to Ai.
Ma gli abitanti di Gabaon, avendo udito ciò che Giosuè avea fatto a Gerico e ad Ai,
4 And therefore they wrought craftily: for they went, and fayned themselues ambassadours, and tooke olde sackes vpon their asses, and olde bottels for wine, both rent and bound vp,
si adoperarono anch'essi, [ma] con inganno; perciocchè andarono, e fecero provvisione di vittuaglia, e presero de' sacchi logori, sopra i loro asini, e degli otri di vino logori, [ch'erano stati] schiantati e [poi] ricuciti;
5 And olde shoes and clouted vpon their feete: also the raiment vpon them was old, and all their prouision of bread was dried, and mouled.
e de' calzamenti logori, e risarciti ne' piedi; e dei vestimenti logori indosso; e tutto il pane della lor provvisione era secco e mucido.
6 So they came vnto Ioshua into the hoste to Gilgal, and said vnto him, and vnto the men of Israel, Wee be come from a farre countrey: nowe therefore make a league with vs.
E andarono a Giosuè, nel campo, in Ghilgal, e dissero a lui e a' principali d'Israele: Noi siamo venuti di lontano paese; ora dunque fate patto con noi.
7 Then the men of Israel said vnto the Hiuites, It may be that thou dwellest among vs, how then can I make a league with thee?
E i principali d'Israele dissero a quegli Hivvei: Forse voi abitate nel mezzo di noi; come dunque faremo noi lega con voi?
8 And they said vnto Ioshua, We are thy seruants. Then Ioshua saide vnto them, Who are ye? and whence come ye?
Ma essi dissero a Giosuè: Noi [siamo] tuoi servitori. E Giosuè disse loro: Chi [siete] voi, e donde venite?
9 And they answered him, From a very farre countrey thy seruants are come for the Name of the Lord thy God: for we haue heard his fame and all that he hath done in Egypt,
Ed essi gli dissero: I tuoi servitori son venuti di molto lontan paese, alla fama del Signore Iddio tuo; perciocchè noi abbiamo udita la sua fama, e tutto ciò ch'egli ha fatto in Egitto,
10 And all that he hath done to the two Kings of the Amorites that were beyonde Iorden, to Sihon King of Heshbon, and to Og King of Bashan, which were at Ashtaroth.
e tutto ciò ch'egli ha fatto a' due re degli Amorrei, ch' [erano] di là dal Giordano; a Sihon, re di Hesbon, e ad Og, re di Basan, che [dimorava] in Astarot.
11 Wherefore our elders, and all the inhabitants of our countrey spake to vs, saying, Take vitailes with you for the iourney, and go to meete them, and say vnto them, Wee are your seruants: now therefore make ye a league with vs.
E i nostri Anziani, e tutti gli abitanti del nostro paese, ci hanno detto: Prendete in mano della provvisione per lo viaggio, e andate incontro a coloro, e dite loro: Noi [siamo] vostri servitori; fate dunque patto con noi.
12 This our bread we tooke it hote with vs for vittailes out of our houses, the day we departed to come vnto you: but nowe beholde, it is dried, and it is mouled.
Quest'[è] il nostro pane; noi lo prendemmo caldo dalle case nostre per nostra provvisione, nel giorno che partimmo per venire a voi; ma ora, ecco egli è secco, ed è diventato mucido;
13 Also these bottels of wine which we filled, were newe, and lo, they be rent, and these our garments and our shooes are olde, by reason of the exceeding great iourney.
e questi [sono] gli otri del vino, i quali noi empiemmo tutti nuovi; ed ecco, sono schiantati; e questi nostri vestimenti, e i nostri calzamenti, si son logorati per lo molto lungo viaggio.
14 And the men accepted their tale concerning their vittailes, and counselled not with the mouth of the Lord.
E que' personaggi presero della lor provvisione, e non domandarono la bocca del Signore.
15 So Ioshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, that he would suffer them to liue: also the Princes of the Congregation sware vnto them.
E Giosuè fece pace con loro, e patteggiò con loro, che li lascerebbe vivere; e i principali della raunanza [lo] giurarono loro.
16 But at the end of three dayes, after they had made a league with them, they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
Ma tre giorni appresso ch'ebbero fatto patto con loro, intesero ch'[erano] lor vicini, e che abitavano nel mezzo di loro.
17 And the children of Israel tooke their iourney, and came vnto their cities the third day, and their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth and Kiriath-iearim.
Perciocchè al terzo giorno, i figliuoli d'Israele si mossero, e vennero alle lor città, ch'[erano] Gabaon, e Chefira, e Beerot, e Chiriat-iearim.
18 And the children of Israel slewe them not, because the Princes of the Congregation had sworne vnto them by the Lord God of Israel: wherefore all the Congregation murmured against the Princes.
E i figliuoli d'Israele non li percossero; perciocchè i principali della raunanza aveano giurato loro per lo Signore Iddio d'Israele. E tutta la raunanza mormorò contro a' principali
19 Then all the Princes said vnto all the Congregation, We haue sworne vnto them by the Lord God of Israel: nowe therefore we may not touch them.
E tutti i principali dissero a tutta la raunanza: Noi abbiamo loro giurato per lo Signore Iddio d'Israele; perciò ora non li possiam toccare.
20 But this we wil doe to them, and let them liue, least the wrath be vpon vs because of the othe which we sware vnto them.
Facciamo loro questo, e lasciamoli vivere; acciocchè non vi sia indegnazione contro a noi, per cagione del giuramento che abbiamo loro fatto.
21 And the Princes sayd vnto them againe, Let them liue, but they shall hewe wood, and drawe water vnto all the Congregation, as the Princes appoint them.
Così i principali dissero loro, che si lascerebbero vivere; ma furono ordinati tagliatori di legne, e attignitori d'acqua, per tutta la raunanza; come i principali dissero loro.
22 Ioshua then called them, and talked with them, and sayd, Wherefore haue ye beguiled vs, saying, We are very farre from you, when ye dwel among vs?
Giosuè adunque li chiamò, e parlò loro, dicendo: Perchè ci avete voi ingannati, dicendo: Noi [siamo d'un paese] molto lontan da voi; e pur voi abitate nel mezzo di noi?
23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the house of my God.
Ora dunque voi [siete] maledetti, e giammai non sarà che non vi sieno d'infra voi de' servi, e de' tagliatori di legne, e degli attignitori di acqua, per la Casa dell'Iddio mio.
24 And they answered Ioshua, and sayd, Because it was tolde thy seruants, that the Lord thy God had commanded his seruant Moses to giue you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land out of your sight, therefore we were exceeding sore afraid for our liues at the presence of you, and haue done this thing:
Ed essi risposero a Giosuè, e dissero: [Noi l'abbiam fatto], perciocchè era stato rapportato per cosa certa a' tuoi servitori ciò che il Signore Iddio tuo avea comandato a Mosè, suo servitore, di darvi tutto il paese, e di distruggere d'innanzi a voi tutti gli abitanti del paese; laonde noi, temendo grandemente di voi per le nostre persone, abbiamo fatto questa cosa;
25 And beholde nowe, we are in thine hand: doe as it seemeth good and right in thine eyes to doe vnto vs.
e ora eccoci nelle tue mani; fa' inverso noi come ti parrà buono e diritto di farci.
26 Euen so did he vnto them, and deliuered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slewe them not.
Egli adunque fece loro così; e li scampò dalle mani de' figliuoli d'Israele, sì che non li ammazzarono.
27 And Ioshua appointed them that same day to be hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the Congregation, and for the altar of the Lord vnto this day, in the place which he should chuse.
E in quel giorno Giosuè li ordinò tagliatori di legne, e attignitori d'acqua, per la raunanza, e per l'Altare del Signore, in qualunque luogo egli eleggerebbe; [il che dura] fino al dì d'oggi.
