Joshua 5
1 Nowe when all the Kings of the Amorites, which were beyond Iorden Westward, and all the Kinges of the Canaanites which were by the Sea, heard that the Lord had dried vp the waters of Iorden before the children of Israel vntill they were gone ouer, their heart fainted: and there was no courage in them any more because of the children of Israel.
Lorsque les rois des Amorrhéens de la rive droite du fleuve, et les rois des Phéniciens de la côte, apprirent que le Seigneur Dieu avait desséché le Jourdain devant les fils d'Israël pendant qu'ils le traversaient, leur intelligence fut paralysée, l'épouvante les saisit, et il ne leur resta pas ombre de prudence devant les fils d'Israël.
2 That same time the Lord said vnto Ioshua, Make thee sharpe kniues, and returne, and circumcise the sonnes of Israel the second time.
Vers ce temps-là, le Seigneur dit à Josué: Fais-toi des couteaux de pierre tranchante, convoque les fils d'Israël de la seconde génération, et soumets-les à la circoncision.
3 Then Ioshua made him sharpe kniues and circumcised the sonnes of Israel in the hill of the foreskinnes.
Et Josué fit des couteaux de pierre tranchante, et il circoncit les fils d'Israël, au lieu appelé: les collines des Prépuces.
4 And this is the cause why Ioshua circumcised all the people, euen the males that came out of Egypt, because all the men of warre were dead in the wildernesse by the way after they came out of Egypt.
C'est ainsi que Josué purifia les fils d'Israël: tous ceux qui étaient nés dans le voyage, et tous ceux qui, à la sortie d'Egypte, n'avaient point été circoncis,
5 For all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were borne in the wildernes by the way after they came out of Egypt, were not circumcised.
Josué les circoncit tous;
6 For the children of Israel walked fourtie yeres in the wildernes, till all the people of the men of warre that came out of Egypt were consumed, because they obeyed not the voyce of the Lord: vnto whome the Lord sware, that he would not shewe them the lande, which the Lord had sworne vnto their fathers, that he would giue vs, euen a land that floweth with milke and hony.
Car, pendant quarante-deux ans, Israël avait erré dans le désert de Mabdaris. C'est pourquoi la plupart des hommes en état de porter les armes, qui, après la sortie d'Egypte, s'étaient montrés indociles aux ordres du Seigneur, n'avaient point été circoncis; aussi le Seigneur les avait-il condamnés à ne jamais voir la terre que le Seigneur avait juré de donner à leurs pères, terre où coulaient le lait et le miel.
7 So their sonnes whome he raysed vp in their steade, Ioshua circumcised: for they were vncircumcised, because they circumcised them not by the way.
Et à ces hommes, le Seigneur substitua leurs fils, ceux que Josué circoncit, parce qu'ils étaient nés pendant le voyage, et n'avaient point été circoncis.
8 And when they had made an ende of circumcising al the people, they abode in the places in the campe till they were whole.
Après leur circoncision, ils se tinrent en repos et restèrent dans leur camp jusqu'à ce qu'ils fussent guéris.
9 After, the Lord said vnto Ioshua, This day I haue taken away the shame of Egypt from you: wherefore he called the name of that place Gilgal, vnto this day.
Et le Seigneur dit à Josué, fils de Nau: J'ai effacé aujourd'hui parmi vous l'opprobre d'Egypte, et le nom de Galgala fut donné à ce lieu.
10 So the children of Israel abode in Gilgal, and kept ye feast of the Passeouer the fourteenth day of the moneth at euen in ye plaine of Iericho.
Ensuite, les fils d'Israël célébrèrent la pâque le quatorzième jour de la lune, après le coucher du soleil, à l'Occident de Jéricho, sur la rive du Jourdain, dans la plaine.
11 And they did eat of the corne of the land, on the morow after the Passeouer, vnleauened breade, and parched corne in the same day.
Ils mangèrent des azymes faits du blé nouveau de cette terre.
12 And the MAN ceased on the morowe after they had eaten of the corne of the land, neither had the children of Israel MAN any more, but did eate of the fruite of the land of Canaan that yeere.
Ce jour-là, il n'y eut plus de manne; dès que les fils d'Israël eurent mangé du grain de cette terre, la manne cessa de tomber pour eux. Ils récoltèrent dans cette année les fruits de la terre des Phéniciens.
13 And when Ioshua was by Iericho, he lift vp his eyes and looked: and behold, there stood a man against him, hauing a sword drawen in his hand: and Ioshua went vnto him, and said vnto him, Art thou on our side, or on our aduersaries?
Et comme Josué était dans le pays de Jéricho, voilà que, levant les yeux, il vit devant lui un homme debout, une épée nue à la main. Et Josué l'abordant, lui dit: Es-tu des nôtres, ou de nos ennemis?
14 And he said, Nay, but as a captaine of the host of the Lord am I nowe come: then Ioshua fel on his face to the earth, and did worship, and saide vnto him, What sayth my Lord vnto his seruant?
Et l'homme lui répondit: Je suis le prince de la milice du Seigneur, et je suis venu maintenant près de toi. A ces mots, Josué tomba la face contre terre, et dit: Maître, que commandes-tu à ton serviteur?
15 And the captaine of ye Lords host said vnto Ioshua, Loose thy shoe of thy foote: for ye place wheron thou standest, is holy: and Ioshua did so.
L'archange du Seigneur reprit: Ote la chaussure de tes pieds, car le lieu où tu les poses est saint.
