Joshua 23
1 And a long season after that the Lord had giuen rest vnto Israel from all their enemies round about, and Ioshua was olde, and stricken in age,
Or, beaucoup de temps s’étant écoulé, après que le Seigneur eut donné la paix à Israël, et toutes les nations à l’entour ayant été soumises, enfin Josué, étant déjà très vieux et d’un âge fort avancé,
2 Then Ioshua called all Israel, and their Elders, and their heads, and their iudges, and their officers, and said vnto them, I am old, and stricken in age.
Appela tout Israël, les anciens, les princes, les chefs et les magistrats, et leur dit: Je suis vieux, et d’un âge très avancé;
3 Also ye haue seene all that the Lord your God hath done vnto al these nations before you, howe the Lord your God him selfe hath fought for you.
Et vous, vous voyez tout ce qu’a fait le Seigneur votre Dieu à toutes les nations d’alentour, comment il a lui-même combattu pour vous;
4 Beholde, I haue deuided vnto you by lot these nations that remaine, to be an inheritance according to your tribes, from Iorden, with all the nations that I haue destroyed, euen vnto the great Sea Westward.
Et maintenant qu’il vous a partagé au sort toute cette terre, depuis la partie orientale du Jourdain jusqu’à la grande mer, et qu’il reste encore beaucoup de nations,
5 And the Lord your God shall expell them before you, and cast them out of your sight, and ye shall possesse their land, as the Lord your God hath said vnto you.
Le Seigneur votre Dieu les exterminera, et les ôtera de devant votre face, et vous posséderez cette terre, comme il vous a promis.
6 Be ye therefore of a valiant courage, to obserue and doe all that is written in the booke of the Lawe of Moses, that ye turne not therefrom to the right hand nor to the left,
Seulement, fortifiez-vous, soyez attentifs à garder tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi de Moïse, et ne vous en détournez ni à droite ni à gauche,
7 Neither companie with these nations: that is, with them which are left with you, neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to sweare by them, neither serue them nor bowe vnto them:
Afin que, lorsque vous serez entrés chez les nations qui doivent se trouver au milieu de vous, vous ne juriez pas au nom de leurs dieux, que vous ne les serviez pas, et que vous ne les adoriez point;
8 But sticke fast vnto the Lord your God, as ye haue done vnto this day.
Mais que vous vous attachiez au Seigneur votre Dieu, ce que vous avez fait jusqu’à ce jour.
9 For ye Lord hath cast out before you great nations and mightie, and no man hath stand before your face hitherto.
Et alors le Seigneur Dieu enlèvera en votre présence des nations grandes et très fortes, et nul ne pourra vous résister.
10 One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the Lord your God, he fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.
Un seul d’entre vous poursuivra mille hommes de vos ennemis, parce que le Seigneur votre Dieu lui-même combattra pour vous, comme il a promis.
11 Take good heede therefore vnto your selues, that ye loue the Lord your God.
Seulement, ayez le plus grand soin d’aimer le Seigneur votre Dieu.
12 Els, if ye goe backe, and cleaue vnto the rest of these nations: that is, of them that remaine with you, and shall make marriages with them, and goe vnto them, and they to you,
Que si vous voulez vous attacher aux erreurs de ces nations qui demeurent parmi vous, vous mêler avec elles par des mariages, et vous unir par des liens d’amitié,
13 Knowe ye for certaine, that the Lord your God will cast out no more of these nations from before you: but they shall be a snare and destruction vnto you, and a whip on your sides, and thornes in your eyes, vntill ye perish out of this good land, which ye Lord your God hath giue you.
Sachez, dès maintenant, que le Seigneur votre Dieu ne les détruira pas devant votre face, mais elles seront pour vous une fosse, un filet, et un obstacle à votre côté, et des épines dans vos yeux, jusqu’à ce qu’il vous enlève et vous extermine de cette terre excellente qu’il vous a livrée.
14 And beholde, this day do I enter into the way of all ye world, and ye know in al your heartes and in all your soules, that nothing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God promised you, but all are come to passe vnto you: nothing hath failed thereof.
Voici que moi aujourd’hui, j’entre dans la voie de toute la terre, et vous reconnaîtrez de tout cœur, que de toutes les paroles que le Seigneur a promis d’accomplir en votre faveur, aucune n’a été dite en vain.
15 Therefore as all good things are come vpon you, which the Lord your God promised you, so shall the Lord bring vpon you euery euill thing, vntill he haue destroyed you out of this good land, which ye Lord your God hath giue you.
Comme donc il a accompli par ses œuvres tout ce qu’il a promis, et que toutes choses ont été prospères, ainsi il amènera sur vous tous les maux dont il vous a menacés, jusqu’à ce qu’il vous enlève et vous extermine de cette terre excellente qu’il vous a livrée,
16 When ye shall transgresse the couenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and shall goe and serue other gods, and bowe your selues to them, then shall the wrath of the Lord waxe hote against you, and ye shall perish quickely out of the good lande which he hath giuen you.
Parce que vous aurez violé l’alliance du Seigneur votre Dieu qu’il a faite avec vous, que vous aurez servi des dieux étrangers, et que vous les aurez adorés; soudain et promptement s’élèvera contre vous la fureur du Seigneur, et vous serez enlevés de cette terre excellente qu’il vous a livrée.
