Joshua 20

1 The Lord also spake vnto Ioshua, saying,

خداوند به یوشع فرمود:

2 Speake to the children of Israel, and say, Appoint you cities of refuge, whereof I spake vnto you by the hand of Moses,

«به مردم اسرائیل بگو که شهرهای پناهگاه را که قبلاً دستورهای آن را توسط موسی به شما داده بودم، تعیین کنند،

3 That the slaier that killeth any person by ignorance, and vnwittingly, may flee thither, and they shall be your refuge from the auenger of blood.

تا اگر کسی مرتکب قتل غیرعمد شود به آنجا پناه ببرد و از انتقام بستگان مقتول در امان باشد.

4 And he that doeth flee vnto one of those cities, shall stand at the entring of the gate of the citie, and shall shewe his cause to the Elders of the citie: and they shall receiue him into the citie vnto them, and giue him a place, that hee may dwell with them.

وقتی قاتل به یکی از این شهرها برسد باید به دروازهٔ شهر که محل قضاوت است برود و قضیه را برای بزرگان شهر شرح دهد. آنها نیز باید او را به داخل شهر برده، مکانی برای زندگی کردن به او بدهند تا پیش ایشان بماند.

5 And if the auenger of blood pursue after him, they shall not deliuer the slaier into his hand because hee smote his neighbour ignorantly, neither hated he him before time:

اگر یکی از بستگان مقتول برای کشتن قاتل بیاید، نباید قاتل را تسلیم نمایند، چون او به طور تصادفی مرتکب عمل قتل شده است، نه از روی کینه و غرض.

6 But hee shall dwell in that citie vntill hee stande before the Congregation in iudgement, or vntill the death of the hie Priest that shall be in those daies: then shall the slaier returne, and come vnto his owne citie, and vnto his owne house, euen vnto the citie from whence he fled.

او باید تا زمان محاکمه‌اش در حضور مردم، و تا وفات رئیس کهنه‌ای که در زمان واقعه بر مصدر کار بوده است، در آن شهر بماند. اما بعد از آن، آزاد است و می‌تواند به شهر و خانهٔ خود بازگردد.»

7 Then they appointed Kedesh in Galil in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba, (which is Hebron) in the mountaine of Iudah.

پس این شهرها برای پناهگاه اختصاص یافتند: قادش جلیل در کوهستان نفتالی، شکیم در کوهستان افرایم و قریهٔ اربع (که حبرون نیز نامیده می‌شد) در کوهستان یهودا.

8 And on the other side Iorden toward Iericho Eastward, they appoynted Bezer in the wildernesse vpon the plaine, out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead, out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, out of the tribe of Manasseh.

همچنین در سمت شرقی رود اردن، در شرق اریحا، این شهرها برای پناهگاه اختصاص یافتند: باصر در صحرا از زمین قبیلهٔ رئوبین، راموت در جلعاد از زمین قبیلهٔ جاد و جولان در باشان از زمین قبیلهٔ منسی.

9 These were the cities appoynted for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that soiourned among them, that whosoeuer killed any person ignorantly, might flee thither, and not die by the hande of the auenger of blood, vntill hee stoode before the Congregation.

شهرهای پناهگاه، هم برای اسرائیلی‌ها بود و هم برای غریبانی که در میان ایشان زندگی می‌کردند، تا اگر کسی ناخواسته مرتکب قتل شود، به یکی از آنها فرار کند تا قبل از محاکمه‌اش در حضور مردم، به دست مدعی خون مقتول، کشته نشود.
