Jonah 4
1 Therefore it displeased Ionah exceedingly, and he was angry.
Jonas en éprouva un vif chagrin, et il fut irrité.
2 And he prayed vnto the Lord, and saide, I pray thee, O Lord, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my countrey? therefore I preuented it to flee vnto Tarshish: for I knewe that thou art a gratious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindnes, and repentest thee of the euill.
Il fit une prière à Yahweh et dit: " Ah! Yahweh, n'est-ce pas là ce que je disais lorsque j'étais encore dans mon pays? C'est pourquoi je me suis d'abord enfui à Tharsis; car je savais que vous êtes un Dieu miséricordieux et clément, lent à la colère, riche en grâce et vous repentant du mal.
3 Therefore nowe O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me: for it is better for me to die then to liue.
Maintenant, Yahweh, retirez donc de moi mon âme, car la mort vaut mieux pour moi que la vie. "
4 Then saide the Lord, Doest thou well to be angry?
Et Yahweh répondit: " Fais-tu bien de t'irriter? "
5 So Ionah went out of the citie and sate on the East side of the citie, and there made him a boothe, and sate vnder it in the shadowe till he might see what should be done in the citie.
Et Jonas sortit de la ville et s'assit à l'orient de la ville; là il se fit une hutte et s'assit dessous à l'ombre, jusqu'à ce qu'il vît ce qui arriverait dans la ville.
6 And the Lord God prepared a gourde, and made it to come vp ouer Ionah, that it might be a shadowe ouer his head and deliuer him from his griefe. So Ionah was exceeding glad of the gourde.
Et Yahweh-Dieu fit pousser un ricin qui s'éleva au-dessus de Jonas pour qu'il y eût de l'ombre sur sa tête, afin de le délivrer de son mal; et Jonas éprouva une grande joie à cause du ricin.
7 But God prepared a worme when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd, that it withered.
Mais Yahweh fit venir, au lever de l'aurore, le lendemain, un ver qui piqua le ricin; et il sécha.
8 And when the sunne did arise, God prepared also a feruent East winde: and the sunne beat vpon the head of Ionah, that he fainted, and wished in his heart to die, and said, It is better for me to dye, then to liue.
Et quand le soleil se leva, Yahweh fit venir un vent brûlant d'orient; et le soleil donna sur la tête de Jonas, au point qu'il défaillit. Il demanda de mourir et dit: " La mort vaut mieux pour moi que la vie. "
9 And God said vnto Ionah, Doest thou well to be angrie for the gourde? And he said, I doe well to be angrie vnto the death.
Alors Dieu dit à Jonas: " Fais-tu bien de t'irriter à cause du ricin? " Il répondit: " Je fais bien de m'irriter jusqu'à la mort. "
10 Then said the Lord, Thou hast had pitie on the gourde for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it growe, which came vp in a night, and perished in a night,
Et Yahweh dit: " Tu t'affliges au sujet du ricin pour lequel tu n'as pas travaillé et que tu n'as pas fait croître, qui est venu en une nuit et qui a péri en une nuit;
11 And shoulde not I spare Nineueh that great citie, wherein are sixe score thousande persons, that cannot discerne betweene their right hand, and their left hand, and also much cattell?
et moi, je ne m'affligerais pas au sujet de Ninive, la grande ville, dans laquelle il y a plus de cent vingt mille hommes qui ne distinguent pas leur droite de leur gauche, et des animaux en grand nombre! "
