Jonah 3
1 And the worde of the Lord came vnto Ionah the seconde time, saying,
La parole de l’Eternel fut adressée une seconde fois à Jonas, en ces termes:
2 Arise, goe vnto Nineueh that great citie, and preach vnto it the preaching, which I bid thee.
"Lève-toi, va à Ninive la grande ville, et fais-y la publication que je te dicterai."
3 So Ionah arose and went to Nineueh according to ye word of the Lord: now Nineueh was a great and excellent citie of three dayes iourney.
Jonas se leva et se rendit à Ninive, selon l’ordre du Seigneur. Or, Ninive était une ville puissamment grande: il fallait trois jours pour la parcourir.
4 And Ionah began to enter into the citie a dayes iourney, and he cryed, and said, Yet fourtie dayes, and Nineueh shalbe ouerthrowen.
Jonas commença à parcourir la ville l’espace d’une journée, et publia cette annonce: "Encore quarante jours, et Ninive sera détruite!"
5 So the people of Nineueh beleeued God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth from ye greatest of the euen to the least of them.
Les habitants de Ninive crurent en Dieu; ils proclamèrent un jeûne, et tous, grands et petits, se vêtirent de cilices.
6 For worde came vnto the King of Nineueh, and he rose from his throne, and he layed his robe from him, and couered him with sackecloth, and sate in ashes.
Le bruit étant parvenu jusqu’au roi de Ninive, il se leva de son trône, jeta bas son manteau, se couvrit d’un cilice et s’assit sur la cendre.
7 And he proclaimed and said through Nineueh, (by the counsell of ye king and his nobles) saying, Let neither man, nor beast, bullock nor sheep taste any thing, neither feed nor drinke water.
Et il fit publier dans Ninive comme décret du roi et de ses dignitaires ce qui suit: "Que ni homme ni bête, ni gros ni menu bétail ne goûtent quoi que ce soit; qu’on ne les laisse pâturer ni boire de l’eau.
8 But let man and beast put on sackecloth, and crie mightily vnto God: yea, let euery man turne from his euill way, and from the wickednesse that is in their handes.
Que les hommes et le bétail soient enveloppés de cilices; que chacun invoque Dieu avec force, qu’il renonce à sa mauvaise conduite et à la rapine qui est dans ses mains!
9 Who can tell if God will turne, and repent and turne away from his fierce wrath, that we perish not?
Qui sait? Peut-être Dieu, se ravisant, révoquera-t-il son arrêt et se départira-t-il de son courroux, pour que nous ne périssions pas."
10 And God sawe their workes that they turned from their euill wayes: and God repented of the euill that he had said that he woulde doe vnto them, and he did it not.
Dieu, en effet, considérant leur conduite, voyant qu’ils avaient abandonné leur mauvaise voie, revint sur la calamité qu’il leur avait annoncée et n’accomplit pas sa menace.
