Job 9
1 Then Iob answered, and sayd,
Et, répondant, Job dit:
2 I knowe verily that it is so: for howe should man compared vnto God, be iustified?
Assurément, je vois qu’il en est ainsi, et qu’un homme comparé à Dieu n’est pas trouvé juste.
3 If I would dispute with him, hee could not answere him one thing of a thousand.
S’il veut disputer avec lui, il ne pourra répondre une chose sur mille.
4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath bene fierce against him and hath prospered?
Dieu est sage de cœur et puissant en force: qui lui a résisté, et a eu la paix?
5 He remoueth the mountaines, and they feele not when he ouerthroweth them in his wrath.
C’est lui qui a transporté des montagnes, et ceux qu’il a renversés dans sa fureur ne s’en sont pas aperçus.
6 Hee remooueth the earth out of her place, that the pillars thereof doe shake.
C’est lui qui remue la terre de sa place, et fait que ses colonnes sont renversées.
7 He commandeth the sunne, and it riseth not: hee closeth vp the starres, as vnder a signet.
C’est lui qui commande au soleil, et le soleil ne se lève pas; et qui renferme les étoiles comme sous un sceau.
8 Hee himselfe alone spreadeth out the heauens, and walketh vpon the height of the sea.
C’est lui qui seul étend les cieux, et qui marche sur les flots de la mer.
9 He maketh the starres Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the climates of the South.
C’est lui qui a fait Arcturus, Orion, les Hyades et les astres cachés du midi.
10 He doeth great things, and vnsearcheable: yea, marueilous things without nomber.
C’est lui qui fait des choses grandes, incompréhensibles et admirables qui sont sans nombre.
11 Lo, when he goeth by me, I see him not: and when he passeth by, I perceiue him not.
S’il vient à moi, je ne le verrai pas: s’il s’en va, je ne m’en apercevrai pas.
12 Behold, when he taketh a pray, who can make him to restore it? who shall say vnto him, What doest thou?
S’il interroge soudain, qui lui répondra? ou qui peut dire: Pourquoi faites-vous ainsi?
13 God will not withdrawe his anger, and the most mightie helpes doe stoupe vnder him.
C’est Dieu à la colère duquel personne ne peut résister, et sous qui se courbent ceux qui portent l’univers.
14 Howe much lesse shall I answere him? or howe should I finde out my words with him?
Combien grand suis-je donc moi, pour que je lui réponde et que je lui parle avec mes propres paroles?
15 For though I were iust, yet could I not answere, but I would make supplication to my Iudge.
Quand j’aurais en moi quel que justice, je ne répondrais rien, mais j’implorerais mon juge.
16 If I cry, and he answere me, yet woulde I not beleeue, that he heard my voyce.
Lors même qu’il m’aurait exaucé, quand je l’invoquais, je ne croirais pas qu’il eût entendu ma voix.
17 For he destroyeth mee with a tempest, and woundeth me without cause.
Car il me brisera dans un tourbillon, et il multipliera mes plaies même sans raison.
18 He wil not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitternesse.
Il ne permet pas que mon esprit se repose, et il me remplit d’amertumes.
19 If we speake of strength, behold, he is strog: if we speake of iudgement, who shall bring me in to pleade?
Si j’ai recours à la force, il est très puissant; si à l’équité d’un jugement, personne n’ose rendre témoignage pour moi.
20 If I woulde iustifie my selfe, mine owne mouth shall condemne mee: if I would be perfite, he shall iudge me wicked.
Si je veux me justifier, ma propre bouche me condamnera; si je me montre innocent, il prouvera que je suis pervers.
21 Though I were perfite, yet I knowe not my soule: therefore abhorre I my life.
Quand je serais juste, mon âme l’ignorerait même, et j’aurais du dégoût pour ma vie.
22 This is one point: therefore I said, Hee destroyeth the perfite and the wicked.
Je n’ai dit qu’une seule chose, c’est que Dieu détruit et l’innocent et l’impie.
23 If the scourge should suddenly slay, should God laugh at the punishment of the innocent?
S’il frappe, qu’il tue tout d’un coup, et qu’il ne se rie pas des peines des innocents.
24 The earth is giuen into the hand of ye wicked: he couereth the faces of the iudges therof: if not, where is he? or who is he?
La terre a été livrée aux mains de l’impie; il voile le visage de ses juges; que si ce n’est pas lui, qui est-ce donc?
25 My dayes haue bene more swift then a post: they haue fled, and haue seene no good thing.
Mes jours ont été plus rapides qu’un coureur: ils ont fui et n’ont pas vu de bonheur.
26 They are passed as with the most swift ships, and as the eagle that flyeth to the pray.
Ils ont passé comme des vaisseaux qui portent des fruits, comme un aigle qui vole vers sa pâture.
27 If I say, I wil forget my complaynt, I will cease from my wrath, and comfort mee,
Lorsque je dis: Je ne parlerai plus ainsi, je change de visage, et je suis tourmenté par la douleur.
28 Then I am afrayd of all my sorowes, knowing that thou wilt not iudge me innocent.
Je redoutais toutes mes œuvres, sachant que vous ne me pardonneriez pas, si je péchais.
29 If I be wicked, why labour I thus in vaine?
Et si après cela je suis impie, pourquoi ai-je travaillé en vain?
30 If I wash my selfe with snowe water, and purge mine hands most cleane,
Si j’avais été lavé comme dans de l’eau de neige, et si mes mains brillaient comme étant très nettes,
31 Yet shalt thou plunge mee in the pit, and mine owne clothes shall make me filthie.
Vous me plongeriez néanmoins dans la fange, et mes vêtements auraient horreur de moi.
32 For he is not a man as I am, that I shoulde answere him, if we come together to iudgement.
Car je ne répondrai pas à un homme qui est semblable à moi, et qui peut être entendu en jugement avec moi et à l’égal de moi.
33 Neyther is there any vmpire that might lay his hand vpon vs both.
Il n’y a personne qui puisse nous reprendre l’un et l’autre, et mettre sa main entre les deux.
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his feare astonish me:
Qu’il retire de moi sa verge, et que sa terreur ne m’épouvante point.
35 Then will I speake, and feare him not: but because I am not so, I holde me still.
Je parlerai et ne le craindrai pas; car, effrayé, je ne puis répondre.
