Jeremiah 5
1 Run to and from by the streetes of Ierusalem, and beholde nowe, and knowe, and inquire in the open places thereof, if ye can finde a man, or if there be any that executeth iudgement, and seeketh the trueth, and I will spare it.
Parcourez les rues de Jérusalem, et observez, et informez-vous, et cherchez dans ses places, si vous trouvez quelqu'un, s'il y a un homme qui fasse le bien, qui cherche la vérité: et elle recevra de moi son pardon.
2 For though they say, The Lord liueth, yet doe they sweare falsely.
Que s'ils jurent « par la vie de l'Éternel, » c'est encore un faux serment qu'ils font.
3 O Lord, are not thine eyes vpon the trueth? thou hast striken them, but they haue not sorowed: thou hast consumed them, but they haue refused to receiue correction: they haue made their faces harder then a stone, and haue refused to returne.
Éternel, tes yeux ne voient-ils pas la vérité? Tu les frappes, et ils ne sentent pas; tu les détruis, ils refusent d'en tirer instruction; ils ont un front plus dur que le roc, ils refusent de se convertir.
4 Therefore I saide, Surely they are poore, they are foolish, for they know not the way of the Lord, nor the iudgement of their God.
Et je disais: Ce ne sont que les petits; ils sont égarés, parce qu'ils ignorent la voie de l'Éternel, la loi de leur Dieu:
5 I will get me vnto the great men, and will speake vnto them: for they haue knowen the way of the Lord, and the iudgement of their God: but these haue altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bondes.
je veux aussi aller vers les Grands, et leur parler; car, pour eux, ils connaissent la voie de l'Éternel, la loi de leur Dieu… Mais eux tous aussi ont brisé le joug, ont rompu les liens.
6 Wherefore a lyon out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolfe of the wildernesse shall destroy them: a leopard shall watch ouer their cities: euery one that goeth out thence, shall be torne in pieces, because their trespasses are many, and their rebellions are increased.
C'est pourquoi de la forêt le lion fondra sur eux, le loup du soir les détruira, la panthère épiera leurs villes; quiconque en sortira, sera déchiré; car leurs rébellions sont nombreuses, et leurs révoltes multipliées.
7 Howe should I spare thee for this? thy children haue forsaken me, and sworne by them that are no gods: though I fed them to the full, yet they committed adulterie, and assembled them selues by companies in the harlots houses.
Pourquoi te pardonnerais-je? Tes fils m'ont quitté, et ils jurent par des dieux qui ne sont pas; je reçus leurs serments, mais ils furent adultères, et firent foule dans la maison de la prostituée.
8 They rose vp in the morning like fed horses: for euery man neyed after his neighbours wife.
Pareils à des étalons bien nourris, ils courent ça et là, ils hennissent, l'un pour la femme de l'autre.
9 Shall I not visite for these things, saith the Lord? Shall not my soule be auenged on such a nation as this?
Tout cela ne le punirai-je point, dit l'Éternel, et d'une nation pareille ne me vengerai-je point?
10 Clime vp vpon their walles, and destroy them, but make not a full ende: take away their batilments, for they are not the Lords.
Escaladez ses murs, et saccagez, mais ne consommez pas la ruine! Arrachez ses sarments! car ce ne sont pas ceux de l'Éternel;
11 For the house of Israel, and the house of Iudah haue grieuously trespassed against me, saith the Lord.
car la maison d'Israël et la maison de Juda m'ont trahi, dit l'Éternel.
12 They haue denied the Lord, and saide, It is not he, neither shall the plague come vpon vs, neither shall we see sworde nor famine.
Ils ont renié l'Éternel et ils ont dit: « Il n'est pas; la calamité ne viendra pas jusqu'à nous, et nous ne verrons ni épée, ni famine.
13 And the Prophetes shall be as winde, and the worde is not in them: thus shall it come vnto them.
Les prophètes ne sont que du vent, ce n'est pas Lui qui inspire leurs discours: ainsi leur soit-il fait! »
14 Wherefore thus saith the Lord God of hostes, Because ye speake such wordes, beholde, I will put my wordes into thy mouth, like a fire, and this people shall be as wood, and it shall deuoure them.
C'est pourquoi, ainsi parle l'Éternel, le Dieu des armées: Parce que vous avez émis cette parole, voici, je ferai de mes paroles en ta bouche une flamme, et de ce peuple, le bois, et elle les dévorera.
15 Loe, I will bring a nation vpon you from farre, O house of Israel, saith the Lord, which is a mightie nation, and an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither vnderstandest what they say.
Voici, j'amène contre vous un peuple du lointain, maison d'Israël, dit l'Éternel; c'est un peuple fort, c'est un peuple antique, un peuple dont tu ignores la langue, et dont tu ne comprendras pas les discours;
16 Whose quiuer is as an open sepulchre: they are all very strong.
son carquois est comme un tombeau ouvert; tous ils sont des héros.
17 And they shall eate thine haruest and thy bread: they shall deuoure thy sonnes and thy daughters: they shall eate vp thy sheepe and thy bullocks: they shall eate thy vines and thy figge trees: they shall destroy with the sworde thy fenced cities, wherein thou didest trust.
Ils dévoreront tes moissons et ton pain, ils dévoreront tes fils et tes filles, ils dévoreront tes brebis et tes bœufs, ils dévoreront ta vigne et ton figuier, ils détruiront tes villes fortes où tu mets ta sûreté, avec l'épée.
18 Neuerthelesse at those dayes, sayth the Lord, I will not make a full ende of you.
Mais même dans ces jours, dit l'Éternel, je ne ferai pas de vous extermination.
19 And when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the Lord our God doe these things vnto vs? then shalt thou answere them, Like as ye haue forsaken me and serued strange gods in your land, so shall ye serue strangers in a land that is not yours.
Et si vous dites: « Pourquoi l'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous a-t-Il fait tout cela? » dis-leur: « Comme vous m'avez quitté, et que vous avez servi des dieux étrangers dans votre pays, ainsi vous servirez des étrangers dans un pays qui n'est pas le vôtre. »
20 Declare this in the house of Iaakob, and publish it in Iudah, saying,
Publiez ceci dans la maison de Jacob, et annoncez-le en Juda, disant:
21 Heare nowe this, O foolish people, and without vnderstanding, which haue eyes and see not, which haue eares and heare not.
Entends-le, nation folle et dénuée de sens, qui as des yeux et ne vois pas, des oreilles et n'entends pas!
22 Feare ye not me, saith the Lord? or will ye not be afraide at my presence, which haue placed the sand for the bounds of the sea by the perpetuall decree that it cannot passe it, and though the waues thereof rage, yet can they not preuaile, though they roare, yet can they not passe ouer it?
Ne me craindrez-vous pas, dit l'Éternel, ne tremblerez-vous pas devant moi? moi qui mis le sable pour limite de la mer, bornes éternelles qu'elle ne franchit pas; que ses vagues s'agitent, elles sont impuissantes; qu'elles bouillonnent, elles ne les franchissent pas.
23 But this people hath an vnfaithfull and rebellious heart: they are departed and gone.
Mais ce peuple a un cœur réfractaire et rebelle; ils désertent, ils s'en vont,
24 For they say not in their heart, Let vs nowe feare the Lord our God, that giueth raine both early and late in due season: hee reserueth vnto vs the appointed weekes of the haruest.
et ils ne disent point en leur cœur: Ah! craignons l'Éternel, notre Dieu, qui nous donne les pluies, les premières et les secondes pluies dans leur saison, et qui maintient fixes nos semaines de moisson.
25 Yet your iniquities haue turned away these things, and your sinnes haue hindred good things from you.
Vos iniquités ont interverti cet ordre, et vos péchés ont éloigné ces biens de vous;
26 For among my people are founde wicked persons, that lay waite as hee that setteth snares: they haue made a pit, to catch men.
car il se trouve dans mon peuple des méchants: ils épient comme l'oiseleur qui se baisse, ils tendent des pièges, et y prennent des hommes.
27 As a cage is full of birdes, so are their houses full of deceite: thereby they are become great and waxen riche.
Comme une cage remplie d'appâts, leurs maisons sont remplies de fraude; c'est ainsi qu'ils croissent et s'enrichissent;
28 They are waxen fat and shining: they doe ouerpasse the deedes of the wicked: they execute no iudgement, no not the iudgement of the fatherlesse: yet they prosper, though they execute no iudgement for the poore.
ils ont un embonpoint brillant, ils outre-passent le mal même; ils ne défendent pas la cause, la cause de l'orphelin, et ils prospèrent, et au droit des pauvres ils ne font pas droit.
29 Shall I not visite for these things, sayth the Lord? or shall not my soule be auenged on such a nation as this?
Tout cela ne le punirai-je point, dit l'Éternel, et d'une nation pareille ne me vengerai-je point?
30 An horrible and filthie thing is committed in the land.
Des atrocités et des horreurs se font dans le pays.
31 The Prophets prophesie lies, and ye Priests receiue giftes in their handes, and my people delite therein. What will ye then doe in the ende thereof?
Les prophètes prophétisent le mensonge, et les prêtres règnent sous leur conduite, et mon peuple l'aime ainsi. Et que ferez-vous après ceci?
