Jeremiah 46
1 The wordes of the Lord, which came to Ieremiah the Prophet against the Gentiles,
Telle est la communication que l’Eternel fit à Jérémie concernant les nations.
2 As against Egypt, against ye armie of Pharaoh Necho King of Egypt, which was by the riuer Perath in Carchemish, which Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel smote in the fourth yere of Iehoiakim the sonne of Iosiah King of Iudah.
Au sujet de l’Egypte, en ce qui a trait à l’armée de Pharaon Nekho, roi d’Egypte, rassemblée près du fleuve de l’Euphrate, à Kharkhémich, et qui fut battue par Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, dans la quatrième année du règne de Joïakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda:
3 Make readie buckler and shielde, and goe forth to battell.
"Armez-vous de boucliers et d’écus et marchez au combat!
4 Make readie the horses, and let the horsemen get vp, and stande vp with your sallets, fourbish the speares, and put on the brigandines.
Attelez les chevaux, montez-les, cavaliers, présentez-vous, casques en tête; fourbissez vos lances, endossez vos cuirasses.
5 Wherefore haue I seene them afraid, and driuen backe? for their mighty men are smitten, and are fled away, and looke not backe: for feare was rounde about, sayeth the Lord.
Pourquoi les ai-je vus, frappés de terreur, battre en retraite? Leurs guerriers sont écrasés, ils fuient d’une fuite éperdue, sans se retourner: l’épouvante règne tout autour, dit l’Eternel.
6 The swift shall not flee away, nor the strong man escape: they shall stumble, and fall towarde the North by the riuer Perath.
Non, il ne s’échappera point, le plus léger à la course, ni le plus vaillant ne pourra sauver sa vie; là, dans la région du Nord, sur les bords du fleuve de l’Euphrate, ils trébuchent, ils tombent.
7 Who is this, that commeth vp, as a flood, whose waters are mooued like the riuers?
Qui est-ce donc qui est monté comme le Nil et dont les flots s’avancent tumultueux comme des torrents?
8 Egypt riseth vp like the flood, and his waters are mooued like the riuers, and he sayth, I wil goe vp, and will couer the earth: I wil destroy the citie with them that dwell therein.
C’Est l’Egypte qui est montée, pareille au Nil, et dont les eaux se sont précipitées en tumulte comme les torrents. Elle s’est écriée: Je vais monter, je vais inonder la terre, détruire les villes et ceux qui les habitent.
9 Come vp, ye horses, and rage ye charets, and let the valiant men come foorth, the blacke Mores, and the Lybians that beare the shield, and the Lydians that handle and bend the bowe.
Elancez-vous, ô coursiers, roulez, ô chars, paraissez, ô guerriers! Ceux de Couch et de Peut, qui portez le bouclier, Loudites, qui maniez et bandez l’arc!
10 For this is the day of ye Lord God of hostes, and a day of vengeance, that he may auenge him of his enemies: for the sworde shall deuoure, and it shall be saciate, and made drunke with their blood: for the Lord God of hosts hath a sacrifice in the North countrey by the Riuer Perath.
Ce jour appartient au Seigneur, à l’Eternel-Cebaot: c’est un jour de représailles pour tirer vengeance de ses ennemis. Le glaive dévorera à satiété et s’enivrera de leur sang. C’Est une hécatombe en l’honneur du Seigneur, Eternel-Cebaot, dans! e pays du Nord, sur les rives de l’Euphrate.
11 Goe vp vnto Gilead, and take balme, O virgine, the daughter of Egypt: in vaine shalt thou vse many medicines: for thou shalt haue no health.
Monte à Galaad et munis-toi de baume, ô vierge, fille d’Egypte! Tu as beau multiplier les remèdes, pour toi point de guérison.
12 The nations haue heard of thy shame, and thy crie hath filled the lande: for the strong hath stumbled against the strong and they are fallen both together.
Les nations ont appris ta honte, la terre est remplie de tes cris de désespoir, car le guerrier a trébuché contre le guerrier, tous deux sont tombés du coup."
13 The woorde that the Lord spake to Ieremiah the Prophet, howe Nebuchad-nezzar king of Babel shoulde come and smite the lande of Egypt.
Communication adressée par l’Eternel au prophète Jérémie; lorsque Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, s’avançait pour abattre le pays d’Egypte:
14 Publish in Egypt and declare in Migdol, and proclaime in Noph, and in Tahpanhes, and say, Stand still, and prepare thee: for the sworde shall deuoure rounde about thee.
"Annoncez-le en Egypte, publiez-le à Migdol, publiez-le à Nof et à Tahpanhès, dites: Debout! Tiens-toi prêt! car le glaive dévore autour de toi.
15 Why are thy valiant men put backe? they could not stand, because the Lord did driue them.
Pourquoi tes fiers combattants sont-ils violemment renversés? Pas un ne résiste; c’est que l’Eternel les a culbutés.
16 Hee made many to fall, and one fell vpon another: and they saide, Arise, let vs goe againe to our owne people, and to the land of our natiuitie from the sworde of the violent.
Nombreux sont ceux qu’il fait trébucher, l’un se jette sur l’autre, disant: Allons, retournons parmi notre peuple et dans notre pays natal, pour échapper au glaive meurtrier.
17 They did cry there, Pharaoh King of Egypt, and of a great multitude hath passed the time appointed.
Là ils interpellent bruyamment Pharaon, roi d’Egypte: "Il a laissé passer le moment!"
18 As I liue, saith the King, whose Name is the Lord of hostes, surely as Tabor is in the mountaines, and as Carmel is in the sea: so shall it come.
Aussi vrai que j’existe, dit le Roi, qui a nom Eternel-Cebaot, pareil au Thabor, parmi les montagnes, comme le Carmel qui s’avance dans la mer, il va venir, l’ennemi vainqueur.
19 O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt, make thee geare to goe into captiuitie: for Noph shall be waste and desolate, without an inhabitant.
Prépare-toi une toilette d’exil, ô insouciante fille d’Egypte! car Nof deviendra une solitude, elle sera ruinée, dépeuplée.
20 Egypt is like a faire calfe, but destruction commeth: out of the North it commeth.
O Egypte, génisse aux belles formes, la calamité s’avance du Nord, elle s’avance.
21 Also her hired men are in the middes of her like fat calues: they are also turned backe and fled away together: they could not stand, because the day of their destruction was come vpon them, and the time of their visitation.
Même les mercenaires qu’elle abrite sont comme des veaux à l’engrais; eux aussi lâchent pied, s’enfuient ensemble, sans résister. C’Est que leur jour fatal est venu les atteindre, l’heure vengeresse.
22 The voyce thereof shall goe foorth like a serpent: for they shall march with an armie, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.
Son cri sera strident comme le sifflement du serpent, lorsque les ennemis marcheront contre elle, armés de haches comme des bûcherons.
23 They shall cut downe her forest, saith the Lord: for they cannot be counted, because they are moe then ye grashoppers, and are innumerable.
Ils abattent sa forêt, dit l’Eternel, elle si impénétrable cependant; c’est qu’ils sont plus nombreux que des sauterelles, on ne peut les compter.
24 The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded: she shall be deliuered into the handes of the people of the North.
Elle est couverte de confusion, la fille de l’Egypte: elle a été livrée entre les mains d’un peuple du Nord.
25 Thus saith the Lord of hostes, the God of Israel, Behold, I will visite the common people of No and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods and their Kings, euen Pharaoh, and al them that trust in him,
L’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël, a dit: Voici, je vais sévir sur Amon divinité de Nô, sur Pharaon et sur l’Egypte, sur ses dieux et ses rois, oui, sur Pharaon et sur ceux qui mettent leur confiance en lui.
26 And I will deliuer them into the handes of those, that seeke their liues, and into the hand of Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel, and into the handes of his seruants, and afterwarde she shall dwell as in the olde time, saith the Lord.
Je les livrerai à leurs mortels ennemis, à Nabuchodonosor et à ses serviteurs. Et après cela, ce pays sera habité comme dans les temps passés, dit l’Eternel.
27 But feare not thou, O my seruant Iaakob, and be not thou afraid, O Israel: for behold, I will deliuer thee from a farre countrey, and thy seede from the land of their captiuitie, and Iaakob shall returne and be in rest, and prosperitie, and none shall make him afraid.
Pour toi, ô mon serviteur Jacob, ne crains rien; ne sois point alarmé, ô Israël! car mon secours te fera sortir des régions lointaines et tes descendants de leur pays d’exil. Jacob reviendra, et il jouira d’une paix et d’une sécurité que personne ne troublera.
28 Feare thou not, O Iaakob my seruant, saith the Lord: for I am with thee, and I will vtterly destroy all the nations, whither I haue driuen thee: but I will not vtterly destroy thee, but correct thee by iudgement, and not vtterly cut thee off.
Non, toi, tu n’as rien à craindre, mon serviteur Jacob, dit l’Eternel, car je serai avec toi. Dussé-je détruire de fond en comble tous les peuples, parmi lesquels je t’aurai relégué, que toi, je ne te détruirais pas. Je te frapperai avec mesure, mais n’aurai garde de consommer ta ruine."
