Jeremiah 4
1 O Israel, if thou returne, returne vnto me, saith the Lord: and if thou put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remoue.
Si tu revenais, ô Israël, dit le Seigneur, revenais à moi, si tu écartais tes abominations loin de ma face, sans plus errer de côté et d’autre,
2 And thou shalt sweare, The Lord liueth in trueth, in iudgement, and in righteousnesse, and the nations shall be blessed in him, and shall glorie in him.
et si tu jurais "par l’Eternel vivant", en vérité, en droiture et justice mais les peuples par lui se diraient heureux, et par lui se diraient glorieux!
3 For thus saith the Lord to the men of Iudah, and to Ierusalem,
Car c’est ainsi que parle l’Eternel aux gens de Juda et de Jérusalem: "Creusez-vous des sillons, et ne jetez pas vos semences parmi les épines.
4 Breake vp your fallowe ground, and sowe not among the thornes: be circumcised to the Lord, and take away the foreskinnes of your hearts, ye men of Iudah, and inhabitants of Ierusalem, lest my wrath come foorth like fire, and burne, that none can quenche it, because of the wickednesse of your inuentions.
Tâchez de vous circoncire en l’honneur de l’Eternel et d’enlever les excroissances de votre coeur; sans cela ma colère éclatera comme le feu, et brûlera sans qu’on puisse l’éteindre, à cause de la perversité de vos actes."
5 Declare in Iudah, and shewe forth in Ierusalem, and say, Blowe the trumpet in the lande: cry, and gather together, and say, Assemble your selues, and let vs goe into strong cities.
Annoncez en Juda, proclamez à Jérusalem et dites: "Qu’on fasse retentir la trompette dans le pays! Criez à plein gosier et dites: "Rassemblez-vous, afin de nous retirer dans les villes fortes!"
6 Set vp the standart in Zion: prepare to flee, and stay not: for I will bring a plague from the North, and a great destruction.
Dressez une bannière dans la direction de Sion, fuyez, ne vous arrêtez pas! Car je fais venir du Nord une calamité, une terrible catastrophe.
7 The lyon is come vp from his denne, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is departed, and gone forth of his place to lay thy land waste, and thy cities shalbe destroyed without an inhabitant.
Un lion s’est élancé de son hallier, un destructeur de nations s’est mis en route, quittant sa résidence, pour réduire ton pays en ruine; tes villes deviendront des solitudes inhabitées.
8 Wherefore girde you with sackecloth: lament, and howle, for the fierce wrath of the Lord is not turned backe from vs.
C’Est pourquoi ceignez-vous de cilices, exhalez votre douleur, lamentez-vous, puisque le feu de la colère divine ne se détourne pas de nous.
9 And in that day, saith the Lord, the heart of the King shall perish, and the heart of the princes and the Priestes shall be astonished, and the Prophets shall wonder.
En ce jour, il arrivera, dit l’Eternel, que le coeur du roi et le coeur des chefs seront éperdus; atterrés seront les prêtres et stupéfaits les prophètes.
10 Then saide I, Ah, Lord God, surely thou hast deceiued this people and Ierusalem, saying, Ye shall haue peace, and the sworde perceth vnto the heart.
Et je m’écriai: "Eh quoi! Eternel Dieu! Ainsi donc tu aurais complètement leurré ce peuple et Jérusalem, quand tu disais: "Vous obtiendrez la paix!—Et le glaive pénètre jusqu’à l’âme!
11 At that time shall it bee saide to this people and to Ierusalem, A dry winde in the hie places of the wildernes commeth towarde ye daughter of my people, but neither to fanne nor to clense.
En ce temps-là, on dira à ce peuple et à Jérusalem: "II y a un vent embrasé sur les hauteurs dans le désert, venant dans la direction de la fille de mon peuple, mais ne servant ni à vanner ni à épurer le grain.
12 A mightie winde shall come vnto me from those places, and nowe will I also giue sentence vpon them.
Un souffle violent m’arrive de là; maintenant je vais, moi aussi, prononcer l’arrêt contre eux.
13 Beholde, he shall come vp as the cloudes, and his charets shalbe as a tempest: his horses are lighter then eagles. Woe vnto vs, for wee are destroyed.
Voici, il s’élance comme les nuages; ses chars ressemblent à l’ouragan, ses chevaux sont plus rapides que les aigles. Malheur à nous! Car nous sommes, saccagés.
14 O Ierusalem, wash thine heart from wickednes, that thou maiest be saued: how long shall thy wicked thoughtes remaine within thee?
O Jérusalem, lave ton coeur de toute perversité pour être sauvée: jusqu’à quand logeras-tu dans ton sein tes pensées criminelles?
15 For a voyce declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.
Car une voix se fait entendre de Dan et annonce la calamité depuis la montagne d’Ephraïm.
16 Make ye mention of the heathen, and publish in Ierusalem, Beholde, the skoutes come from a farre countrey, and crie out against the cities of Iudah.
"Faites-le savoir aux nations, allons, apprenez-le à Jérusalem, que des assiégeants arrivent d’un pays lointain et poussent des clameurs contre les villes de Juda!"
17 They haue compassed her about as the watchmen of the fielde, because it hath prouoked me to wrath, saith the Lord.
Comme les gardiens des champs, ils l’enserrent de tous côtés, parce qu’elle s’est révoltée contre moi, dit l’Eternel.
18 Thy wayes and thine inuentions haue procured thee these things, such is thy wickednesse: therefore it shall be bitter, therefore it shall perce vnto thine heart.
C’Est ta conduite, ce sont tes actes qui t’ont valu cela; de là ton malheur, qui est si amer, car il t’atteint jusqu’au coeur.
19 My bely, my bely, I am pained, euen at the very heart: mine heart is troubled within me: I cannot be still: for my soule hath heard the sounde of the trumpet, and the alarme of the battell.
O mes entrailles, mes entrailles! Je frémis jusqu’au fond de mon coeur! Tout mon coeur est en émoi, je ne puis le calmer; car tu entends, ô mon âme, le son de la trompette. Les fanfares belliqueuses.
20 Destruction vpon destruction is cryed, for the whole lande is wasted: suddenly are my tents destroyed, and my curtaines in a moment.
On annonce désastres sur désastres, que tout le pays est saccagé; mes tentes ont été saccagées soudainement, mes pavillons en un clin d’oeil.
21 Howe long shall I see the standert, and heare the sounde of the trumpet?
Jusqu’à quand verrai-je des bannières? Entendrai-je les trompettes retentissantes?
22 For my people is foolish, they haue not knowen me: they are foolish children, and haue none vnderstanding: they are wise to doe euill, but to doe well they haue no knowledge.
Certes, mon peuple est dénué de raison, ils ne me connaissent pas; ce sont des enfants insensés, sans aucun discernement, intelligents seulement pour mal faire, incapables de faire le bien.
23 I haue looked vpon the earth, and loe, it was without forme and voide: and to the heauens, and they had no light.
J’Ai regardé la terre, et voici tout y était chaos informe; et vers les cieuxleur lumière avait disparu.
24 I behelde the mountaines: and loe, they trembled and all the hilles shooke.
J’Ai regardé les montagnes, elles étaient tremblantes; toutes les collineselles étaient violemment agitées.
25 I behelde, and loe, there was no man, and all the birdes of the heauen were departed.
J’Ai regardé et voici, il n’y avait plus d’hommes, et tous les oiseaux du ciel avaient pris leur vol.
26 I behelde, and loe, the fruitfull place was a wildernesse, and all the cities thereof were broken downe at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce wrath.
J’Ai regardé et voici, la campagne fertile était devenue un désert, et toutes ses villes étaient renversées par l’action de l’Eternel, par le feu de sa colère.
27 For thus hath the Lord saide, The whole lande shall be desolate: yet will I not make a full ende.
Oui, ainsi parle l’Eternel: "Tout le pays deviendra une solitude, bien que je ne consomme pas la ruine."
28 Therefore shall the earth mourne, and the heauens aboue shall be darkened, because I haue pronounced it: I haue thought it, and will not repent, neither will I turne backe from it.
C’Est pour cette raison que la terre est en deuil, et les cieux là-haut sont ténébreux, parce que j’ai annoncé ce que j’ai résolu et que je n’entends ni me raviser ni me rétracter.
29 The whole citie shall flee, for the noyse of the horsemen and bowemen: they shall goe into thickets, and clime vp vpon the rockes: euery citie shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.
Devant la clameur des cavaliers et des archers, toute la ville est en fuite; on pénètre dans les fourrés, on escalade les rochers; toute ville est abandonnée, pas un homme n’y reste.
30 And when thou shalt be destroyed, what wilt thou doe? Though thou clothest thy selfe with skarlet, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of golde, though thou paintest thy face with colours, yet shalt thou trimme thy selfe in vaine: for thy louers will abhorre thee and seeke thy life.
Et toi, si complètement ruinée, que vas-tu faire? Tu aurais beau te vêtir de pourpre, te parer de tes bijoux d’or, allonger tes yeux au moyen du fard: vainement tu te ferais belle, les amoureux te dédaignent, c’est à ta vie qu’ils en veulent.
31 For I haue heard a noyse as of a woman trauailing, or as one labouring of her first child, euen the voyce of the daughter Zion that sigheth and stretcheth out her handes: woe is me nowe: for my soule fainteth because of the murtherers.
Car j’entends des plaintes comme celles d’une femme en travail, des cris d’angoisse comme ceux d’une mère mettant au monde son premier-né: c’est la voix de Sion qui exhale des soupirs, qui se tord les bras: "Malheur à moi, mon âme est à bout de force devant les meurtriers!"
