Jeremiah 4
1 O Israel, if thou returne, returne vnto me, saith the Lord: and if thou put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remoue.
Si tu veux revenir Israël, — oracle de Yahweh, reviens vers moi. Et si tu ôtes tes abominations de devant moi, tu ne seras plus errant!
2 And thou shalt sweare, The Lord liueth in trueth, in iudgement, and in righteousnesse, and the nations shall be blessed in him, and shall glorie in him.
Et si tu jures « Yahweh est vivant! » avec vérité, avec droiture et avec justice, les nations se diront bénies en lui; et se glorifieront en lui.
3 For thus saith the Lord to the men of Iudah, and to Ierusalem,
Car ainsi parle Yahweh aux hommes de Juda et de Jérusalem: Défrichez vos jachères, et ne semez pas dans les épines.
4 Breake vp your fallowe ground, and sowe not among the thornes: be circumcised to the Lord, and take away the foreskinnes of your hearts, ye men of Iudah, and inhabitants of Ierusalem, lest my wrath come foorth like fire, and burne, that none can quenche it, because of the wickednesse of your inuentions.
Circoncisez-vous pour Yahweh, et enlevez les prépuces de votre cœur, hommes de Juda et habitants de Jérusalem, de peur que ma colère n’éclate comme un feu et ne consume, sans que personne éteigne, à cause de la méchanceté de vos actions.
5 Declare in Iudah, and shewe forth in Ierusalem, and say, Blowe the trumpet in the lande: cry, and gather together, and say, Assemble your selues, and let vs goe into strong cities.
Publiez dans Juda et annoncez dans Jérusalem; parlez, sonnez de la trompette dans le pays; criez à pleine voix et dites: Rassemblez-vous, et allons dans les villes fortes!
6 Set vp the standart in Zion: prepare to flee, and stay not: for I will bring a plague from the North, and a great destruction.
Élevez un étendard du côté de Sion, sauvez-vous, ne vous arrêtez pas! Car j’amène du septentrion une calamité et un grand désastre.
7 The lyon is come vp from his denne, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is departed, and gone forth of his place to lay thy land waste, and thy cities shalbe destroyed without an inhabitant.
Un lion s’élance de son fourré, et un destructeur des nations a levé sa tente, quitté son lieu, pour réduire ton pays en désert; tes villes seront désolées, sans habitants.
8 Wherefore girde you with sackecloth: lament, and howle, for the fierce wrath of the Lord is not turned backe from vs.
C’est pourquoi ceignez-vous du cilice; pleurez et lamentez-vous; car le feu de la colère de Yahweh ne s’est pas détourné de nous.
9 And in that day, saith the Lord, the heart of the King shall perish, and the heart of the princes and the Priestes shall be astonished, and the Prophets shall wonder.
En ce jour-là, — oracle de Yahweh, le cœur manquera au roi et aux princes; les prêtres seront consternés, et les prophètes stupéfaits.
10 Then saide I, Ah, Lord God, surely thou hast deceiued this people and Ierusalem, saying, Ye shall haue peace, and the sworde perceth vnto the heart.
Et je dis: Ah! Seigneur Yahweh, vous avez donc trompé ce peuple et Jérusalem, en disant: « Vous aurez la paix! » alors que l’épée va les frapper à mort!
11 At that time shall it bee saide to this people and to Ierusalem, A dry winde in the hie places of the wildernes commeth towarde ye daughter of my people, but neither to fanne nor to clense.
En ce temps-là, on dira à ce peuple et à Jérusalem: Un vent brûlant vient des collines du désert sur le chemin qui mène à la fille de mon peuple, non pour vanner, ni pour nettoyer;
12 A mightie winde shall come vnto me from those places, and nowe will I also giue sentence vpon them.
un vent plus fort que celui qui chasse la paille vient vers moi. Maintenant, à mon tour, je vais prononcer leur sentence.
13 Beholde, he shall come vp as the cloudes, and his charets shalbe as a tempest: his horses are lighter then eagles. Woe vnto vs, for wee are destroyed.
Voici qu’il monte comme les nuées; pareils à l’ouragan sont ses chars; plus rapides que les aigles sont ses chevaux. Malheur à nous, car nous sommes perdus!
14 O Ierusalem, wash thine heart from wickednes, that thou maiest be saued: how long shall thy wicked thoughtes remaine within thee?
Purifie ton cœur de la méchanceté, Jérusalem, pour que tu sois sauvée; jusques à quand demeureront-elles dans ton cœur, tes pensées funestes?
15 For a voyce declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.
Car une voix partie de Dan l’annonce; elle publie le malheur depuis la montagne d’Éphraïm.
16 Make ye mention of the heathen, and publish in Ierusalem, Beholde, the skoutes come from a farre countrey, and crie out against the cities of Iudah.
Faites- le savoir aux nations, annoncez- leur le malheur de Jérusalem. Des assiégeants arrivent d’une terre lointaine; ils poussent leurs cris contre les villes de Juda.
17 They haue compassed her about as the watchmen of the fielde, because it hath prouoked me to wrath, saith the Lord.
Comme les gardiens des champs, ils entourent Jérusalem; car elle s’est révoltée contre moi, — oracle de Yahweh.
18 Thy wayes and thine inuentions haue procured thee these things, such is thy wickednesse: therefore it shall be bitter, therefore it shall perce vnto thine heart.
Voilà ce que t’ont valu ta conduite et tes actes criminels; voilà le fruit de ta méchanceté, et il est amer! Oui, cela atteint jusqu’au cœur!
19 My bely, my bely, I am pained, euen at the very heart: mine heart is troubled within me: I cannot be still: for my soule hath heard the sounde of the trumpet, and the alarme of the battell.
Mes entrailles! mes entrailles! je souffre au plus intime du cœur! Mon cœur s’agite; je ne puis me taire! Car tu entends; ô mon âme, le son de la trompette, le cri de guerre.
20 Destruction vpon destruction is cryed, for the whole lande is wasted: suddenly are my tents destroyed, and my curtaines in a moment.
On annonce ruine sur ruine; car tout le pays est ravagé. Tout d’un coup on détruit mes tentes, en un instant mes pavillons.
21 Howe long shall I see the standert, and heare the sounde of the trumpet?
Jusques à quand verrai-je l’étendard, entendrai-je le son de la trompette?…
22 For my people is foolish, they haue not knowen me: they are foolish children, and haue none vnderstanding: they are wise to doe euill, but to doe well they haue no knowledge.
C’est que mon peuple est fou! Ils ne me connaissent pas; ce sont des fils insensés, qui n’ont pas d’intelligence; ils sont habiles à faire le mal, ils ne savent pas faire le bien.
23 I haue looked vpon the earth, and loe, it was without forme and voide: and to the heauens, and they had no light.
Je regarde la terre, et voici qu’elle est informe et vide; les cieux, et leur lumière a disparu.
24 I behelde the mountaines: and loe, they trembled and all the hilles shooke.
Je regarde les montagnes, et voici qu’elles sont ébranlées, et toutes les collines chancellent.
25 I behelde, and loe, there was no man, and all the birdes of the heauen were departed.
Je regarde, et voici qu’il n’y a plus d’homme; et tous les oiseaux du ciel ont fui.
26 I behelde, and loe, the fruitfull place was a wildernesse, and all the cities thereof were broken downe at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce wrath.
Je regarde, et voici que le verger est devenu un désert; et toutes ses villes sont détruites devant Yahweh, devant le feu de sa colère.
27 For thus hath the Lord saide, The whole lande shall be desolate: yet will I not make a full ende.
Car ainsi parle Yahweh: Tout le pays sera dévasté; cependant je ne le détruirai pas entièrement.
28 Therefore shall the earth mourne, and the heauens aboue shall be darkened, because I haue pronounced it: I haue thought it, and will not repent, neither will I turne backe from it.
À cause de cela, la terre est en deuil, et les cieux en haut sont obscurcis, parce que je l’ ai dit et que je l’ ai résolu, et je ne m’en repens pas et je n’en reviendrai pas.
29 The whole citie shall flee, for the noyse of the horsemen and bowemen: they shall goe into thickets, and clime vp vpon the rockes: euery citie shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.
À la voix du cavalier et de l’archer, toute la ville est en fuite; on entre dans les bois, on monte sur les rochers; toutes les villes sont abandonnées, il n’y a plus d’habitant.
30 And when thou shalt be destroyed, what wilt thou doe? Though thou clothest thy selfe with skarlet, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of golde, though thou paintest thy face with colours, yet shalt thou trimme thy selfe in vaine: for thy louers will abhorre thee and seeke thy life.
Et toi, dévastée, que feras-tu? Quand tu te revêtirais de pourpre, que tu te parerais d’ornements d’or, que tu borderais tes yeux de fard: c’est en vain que tu te ferais belle; tes amants te dédaignent; c’est à ta vie qu’ils en veulent.
31 For I haue heard a noyse as of a woman trauailing, or as one labouring of her first child, euen the voyce of the daughter Zion that sigheth and stretcheth out her handes: woe is me nowe: for my soule fainteth because of the murtherers.
Car j’entends une voix comme d’une femme en travail, des cris d’ angoisse comme d’une femme qui enfante pour la première fois; voix de la fille de Sion, qui pousse des soupirs et étend les mains: « Malheur à moi! car mon âme succombe aux coups des meurtriers! »
