Jeremiah 18
1 The worde which came to Ieremiah from the Lord, saying,
Parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie par le Seigneur, disant:
2 Arise, and go downe into the potters house, and there shall I shewe thee my words.
Lève-toi, et descends dans la maison du potier, et là tu entendras mes paroles.
3 Then I went downe to the potters house, and behold, he wrought a worke on the wheeles.
Et je descendis dans la maison du potier, et voilà qu’il faisait lui-même un ouvrage sur sa roue.
4 And the vessell that he made of clay, was broken in the hand of the potter. so he returned, and made it another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
Et le vase d’argile qu’il faisait se brisa dans ses mains: et revenant, il en fit un autre vase, comme il avait plu à ses yeux de le faire.
5 Then the worde of the Lord came vnto me, saying,
Et la parole du Seigneur me fut adressée, disant:
6 O house of Israel, cannot I doe with you as this potter, sayth the Lord? beholde, as the clay is in the potters hande, so are you in mine hande, O house of Israel.
Est-ce que comme ce potier a fait à son argile, je ne pourrai pas vous faire, maison d’Israël, dit le Seigneur? Voici que, comme l’argile est dans la main du potier, ainsi vous êtes dans ma main, maison d’Israël.
7 I will speake suddenly against a nation or against a kingdome to plucke it vp, and to roote it out and to destroy it.
Soudain je parlerai contre une nation, et contre un royaume, afin de l’extirper et de le détruire, et de le perdre entièrement.
8 But if this nation, against whom I haue pronounced, turne from their wickednesse, I will repent of the plague that I thought to bring vpon them.
Si cette nation se repent du mal que je lui ai reproché, je me repentirai moi aussi du mal que j’ai résolu de lui faire.
9 And I wil speake suddenly concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdome to builde it and to plant it.
Soudain aussi je parlerai d’une nation et d’un royaume, afin de l’édifier et de l’affermir.
10 But if it do euill in my sight and heare not my voyce, I will repent of ye good that I thought to do for them.
Et si cette nation fait le mal à mes yeux et n’écoute point ma voix, moi aussi je me repentirai du bien que j’ai dit que je lui ferais.
11 Speake thou nowe therefore vnto the men of Iudah, and to the inhabitants of Ierusalem, saying, Thus saith ye Lord, Behold, I prepare a plague for you, and purpose a thing against you: returne you therefore euery one from his euill way, and make your wayes and your workes good.
Maintenant donc, dis à l’homme de Juda et aux habitants de Jérusalem, en disant: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Voilà que moi je prépare contre vous un malheur, et que je forme contre vous une résolution: que chacun revienne de sa voie mauvaise, et dirigez vos voies et vos œuvres.
12 But they sayde desperately, Surely wee will walke after our owne imaginations, and doe euery man after the stubburnnesse of his wicked heart.
Et ils ont dit: Nous avons désespéré; nous suivrons nos pensées, chacun de nous accomplira la dépravation de son cœur mauvais.
13 Therefore thus saith the Lord, Aske now among the heathen, who hath heard such thinges? the virgin of Israel hath done very filthily.
C’est pourquoi, voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Interrogez les nations: Qui a jamais ouï des choses horribles, telles que celles qu’a commises à l’excès la vierge d’Israël?
14 Will a man forsake the snowe of Lebanon, which commeth from the rocke of the fielde? or shall the colde flowing waters, that come from another place, be forsaken?
Est-ce que la neige du Liban abandonnera le sentier de la campagne? ou peuvent-elles être détruites, des eaux jaillissantes, fraîches et coulantes?
15 Because my people hath forgotten me, and haue burnt incense to vanitie, and their prophets haue caused them to stumble in their wayes from the auncient wayes, to walke in the pathes and way that is not troden,
Parce que mon peuple m’a oublié, sans en retirer aucun fruit, faisant des libations et se heurtant dans leurs voies, dans les sentiers du siècle, afin d’y marcher dans un chemin non frayé;
16 To make their land desolate and a perpetual derision, so that euery one that passeth thereby, shalbe astonished and wagge his head,
Afin que leur terre fût livrée à la désolation et à un sifflement éternel; quiconque passera à travers cette terre, sera dans la stupeur et secouera sa tête.
17 I will scatter them with an East winde before the enemie: I will shewe them the backe, and not the face in the day of their destruction.
Comme un vent brûlant, je les disperserai devant l’ennemi; je leur tournerai le dos et non la face, au jour de leur perte.
18 Then sayde they, Come, and let vs imagine some deuice against Ieremiah: for the Lawe shall not perish from the Priest, nor counsell from the wise, nor the worde from the Prophet: come, and let vs smite him with the tongue, and let vs not giue heede to any of his words.
Et ils ont dit: Venez, et formons contre Jérémie des desseins; car la loi ne manquera pas au prêtre, ni le conseil au sage, ni la parole au prophète; venez, blessons-le de notre langue, et n’ayons égard à aucun de ses discours.
19 Hearken vnto mee, O Lord, and heare the voyce of them that contend with me.
Seigneur, portez votre attention sur moi et entendez la voix de mes adversaires.
20 Shall euill be recompensed for good? for they haue digged a pit for my soule: remember that I stood before thee, to speake good for the, and to turne away thy wrath from them.
Est-ce que pour le bien est rendu le mal, puisqu’ils ont creusé une fosse à mon âme? Souvenez-vous que je me suis tenu en votre présence, afin de parler en leur faveur, et afin de détourner votre imagination d’eux.
21 Therefore, deliuer vp their children to famine, and let them drop away by the force of the sworde, and let their wiues be robbed of their children, and be widowes: and let their husbands be put to death, and let their yong men be slayne by the sword in the battell.
À cause de cela, livrez leurs fils à la faim, et conduisez-les aux mains du glaive; que leurs femmes deviennent sans enfants et veuves; que leurs maris soient mis à mort; que les jeunes hommes soient percés par le glaive dans le combat.
22 Let the crye bee heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring an hoste suddenly vpon them: for they haue digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feete.
Qu’un cri soit entendu de leurs maisons; car vous amènerez soudain sur eux un voleur, parce qu’ils ont creusé une fosse afin de me prendre, et qu’ils ont caché des lacs sous mes pieds.
23 Yet Lord thou knowest al their counsel against me tendeth to death: forgiue not their iniquitie, neither put out their sinne from thy sight, but let them be ouerthrowen before thee: deale thus with them in the time of thine anger.
Mais vous. Seigneur, vous connaissez tout leur dessein de mort contre moi; ne soyez pas propice à leur iniquité, et que leur péché ne s’efface pas de votre face; qu’ils soient renversés en votre présence; au temps de votre fureur consumez-les.
