Isaiah 40
1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, will your God say.
Consolez, consolez mon peuple! dit votre Dieu.
2 Speake comfortably to Ierusalem, and crye vnto her, that her warrefare is accomplished, that her iniquitie is pardoned: for she hath receiued of the Lords hand double for all her sinnes.
Parlez au cœur de Jérusalem, et criez-lui que son service est fini, que son crime est acquitté, qu'elle a reçu de la main de l'Éternel au double de tous ses péchés!
3 A voyce cryeth in the wildernesse, Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make streight in the desert a path for our God.
Une voix crie: Dans le désert préparez le chemin de l'Éternel, aplanissez dans la steppe aride une route pour notre Dieu!
4 Euery valley shall be exalted, and euery mountaine and hill shall be made lowe: and the crooked shalbe streight, and the rough places plaine.
Que toute vallée soit exhaussée, et que toute montagne et toute colline soient abaissées! que le sol raboteux devienne un sol uni, et toute aspérité un terrain aplani!
5 And the glory of the Lord shalbe reueiled, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
Et la gloire de l'Éternel se révélera, et toute chair dans le même instant verra que la bouche de l'Éternel a parlé.
6 A voyce saide, Crie. And he saide, What shall I crie? All flesh is grasse, and all the grace thereof is as the floure of the fielde.
Une voix dit: « Proclame! » Et l'on dit: « Que proclamerai-je? » – « Toute chair est une herbe, et toute sa grâce comme la fleur des champs:
7 The grasse withereth, the floure fadeth, because the Spirite of the Lord bloweth vpon it: surely the people is grasse.
l'herbe sèche, la fleur se fane, quand du souffle de l'Éternel elle est atteinte, (oui, le peuple est une herbe!)
8 The grasse withereth, the floure fadeth: but the worde of our God shall stand for euer.
l'herbe sèche, la fleur se fane, mais la parole de notre Dieu demeure éternellement. »
9 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee vp into the hie mountaine: O Ierusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift vp thy voyce with strength: lift it vp, be not afraide: say vnto the cities of Iudah, Beholde your God.
Monte sur une haute montagne, Sion, messagère de paix! élève avec force ta voix, Jérusalem, messagère de paix! élève-la, ne crains pas! dis aux villes de Juda:
10 Beholde, the Lord God will come with power, and his arme shall rule for him: beholde, his rewarde is with him, and his worke before him,
« Voici votre Dieu! » Voici, le Seigneur, l'Éternel arrive en héros, et son bras commande pour lui; voici, ses récompenses l'accompagnent, et ses rétributions le précèdent.
11 He shall feede his flocke like a shepheard: he shall gather the lambes with his arme, and cary them in his bosome, and shall guide them with young.
Comme un berger Il fera paître son troupeau, dans ses bras Il recueillera les agneaux, et dans son sein les portera; Il conduira les mères qui allaitent.
12 Who hath measured the waters in his fist? and counted heauen with the spanne, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure? and weighed ye mountaines in a weight, and the hilles in a balance?
Qui mesura les eaux dans le creux de sa main, et de l'empan prit les dimensions des Cieux, et ramassa dans un setier la poudre de la terre, et pesa les montagnes à la balance et les collines dans les bassins?
13 Who hath instructed ye Spirit of the Lord? or was his counseler or taught him?
Qui a dirigé l'esprit de l'Éternel, et qui fut son conseiller pour l'enseigner?
14 Of whom tooke he counsell, and who instructed him and taught him in the way of iudgement? or taught him knowledge, and shewed vnto him the way of vnderstanding?
Qui consulta-t-Il pour en être éclairé? et qui L'instruisit dans la voie de ce qui est juste, et L'instruisit dans la science, et Lui montra le chemin de l'intelligence?
15 Beholde, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the dust of the balance: beholde, he taketh away the yles as a litle dust.
Voici, des peuples sont comparables à une goutte qui pend à un seau, et à une poussière sur une balance, et Il soulève des îles comme la menue poussière.
16 And Lebanon is not sufficient for fire, nor the beastes thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.
Et le Liban ne suffit pas au feu, ni son gibier aux holocaustes.
17 All nations before him are as nothing, and they are counted to him, lesse then nothing, and vanitie.
Tous les peuples sont devant Lui comme s'ils n'étaient pas, Il les regarde comme un néant et une vanité.
18 To whom then wil ye liken God? or what similitude will ye set vp vnto him?
Et à qui pourriez-vous assimiler Dieu? et quelle image feriez- vous son égale?
19 The workeman melteth an image, or the goldsmith beateth it out in golde, or the goldesmith maketh siluer plates.
Un ouvrier fond une idole, et un orfèvre la plaque d'or, et y soude des chaînettes d'argent.
20 Doeth not the poore chuse out a tree that will not rot, for an oblation? he seeketh also vnto him a cunning workeman, to prepare an image, that shall not be moued.
Le pauvre borné dans ses dons choisit un bois qui ne pourrisse pas, il se procure un habile ouvrier pour fabriquer une image qui ne branle pas. –
21 Know ye nothing? haue ye not heard it? hath it not bene tolde you from the beginning? haue ye not vnderstand it by the foundation of the earth?
Ne le savez-vous pas? ne l'avez-vous pas appris? Cela ne vous fut-il pas annoncé dès l'origine? Ne prîtes-vous jamais garde à la fondation de la terre?
22 He sitteth vpon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grashoppers, hee stretcheth out ye heauens, as a curtaine, and spreadeth them out, as a tent to dwell in.
C'est Lui qui a son trône au-dessus du disque de la terre, dont les habitants sont comme des sauterelles; qui déroule les Cieux comme une tenture, et les déploie comme un pavillon pour y loger;
23 He bringeth the princes to nothing, and maketh the iudges of the earth, as vanitie,
qui réduit les princes au néant, et fait des juges de la terre une vanité:
24 As though they were not plated, as though they were not sowen, as though their stocke tooke no roote in the earth: for he did euen blow vpon them, and they withered, and the whirlewinde will take them away as stubble.
à peine sont-ils plantés, à peine sont-ils semés, à peine leur tige a-t-elle pris racine en terre, qu'il souffle sur eux, et ils sèchent, et une tempête les emporte comme la balle.
25 To whom nowe will ye liken me, that I should be like him, saith the Holy one?
Et à qui m'assimilerez-vous, pour que je lui ressemble? dit le Saint.
26 Lift vp your eyes on hie, and beholde who hath created these things, and bringeth out their armies by nomber, and calleth them all by names? by the greatnesse of his power and mightie strength nothing faileth.
Levez vos yeux en haut, et regardez! Qui les a créés? Il fait avancer leur armée tout entière, les appelle tous par leur nom; si grand est son pouvoir, et si puissante est sa force, que pas un ne fait défaut.
27 Why sayest thou, O Iaakob, and speakest O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my iudgement is passed ouer of my God?
Pourquoi dis-tu, Jacob, et parles-tu ainsi, Israël: « Mes destinées échappent à l'Éternel, et mon droit passe inaperçu devant mon Dieu! » Ne le sais-tu pas? ou ne l'as-tu pas appris?
28 Knowest thou not? or hast thou not heard, that the euerlasting God, the Lord hath created the endes of the earth? he neither fainteth, nor is wearie: there is no searching of his vnderstanding.
Il est un Dieu pour tous les temps, l'Éternel, créateur des extrémités delà terre; Il ne se fatigue, ni ne s'épuise; on ne saurait sonder son intelligence.
29 But he giueth strength vnto him that fainteth, and vnto him that hath no strength, he encreaseth power.
Il redonne des forces à celui qui est fatigué, et Il redouble la vigueur de celui qui est défaillant.
30 Euen the yong men shall faint, and be wearie, and the yong men shall stumble and fall.
La jeunesse se fatigue et s'épuise, et les guerriers d'élite chancellent;
31 But they that waite vpon the Lord, shall renue their strength: they shall lift vp the wings as the eagles: they shall runne, and not be wearie, and they shall walke and not faint.
mais ceux qui se confient en l'Éternel, reçoivent de nouvelles forces, ils prennent leur vol comme l'aigle; ils courent et ne se fatiguent point, ils vont et ne s'épuisent point.
