Isaiah 28
1 Woe to the crowne of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim: for his glorious beautie shall be a fading flowre, which is vpon the head of the valley of them that be fat, and are ouercome with wine.
Malheur, couronne fastueuse des buveurs d’Ephraïm, diadème éphémère dont se pare son orgueil, qui entoure des têtes brillantes de parfums, étourdies par le vin!
2 Beholde, the Lord hath a mightie and strong hoste, like a tempest of haile, and a whirlewinde that ouerthroweth, like a tempest of mightie waters that ouerflowe, which throwe to the ground mightily.
Voici venir, violent et impétueux, lancé par l’Eternel comme l’irruption de la grêle, un ouragan meurtrier; comme l’irruption de grandes eaux qui submergent tout, il le fait peser sur le sol avec puissance.
3 They shall be troden vnder foote, euen the crowne and the pride of the drunkards of Ephraim.
Elle sera foulée aux pieds, la couronne fastueuse des buveurs d’Ephraïm,
4 For his glorious beautie shall be a fading floure, which is vpon the head of the valley of them that be fatte, and as the hastie fruite afore sommer, which when hee that looketh vpon it, seeth it, while it is in his hand, he eateth it.
et il adviendra de ce diadème flétri qui pare son orgueil, qui couronne sa tête brillante de parfums, comme d’une primeur avant l’été, laquelle, à peine aperçue, à peine dans la main, est déjà dévorée.
5 In that day shall the Lord of hostes be for a crowne of glory, and for a diademe of beautie vnto the residue of his people:
En ce jour, l’Eternel-Cebaot sera une couronne de gloire et un splendide diadème pour le reste de son peuple,
6 And for a spirite of iudgement to him that sitteth in iudgement, and for strength vnto them that turne away the battell to the gate.
et une inspiration de justice à ceux qui siègent pour la justice, de courage à ceux qui repoussent les attaques près des portes.
7 But they haue erred because of wine, and are out of the way by strong drinke: the priest and the prophet haue erred by strong drinke: they are swallowed vp with wine: they haue gone astraye through strong drinke: they faile in vision: they stumble in iudgement.
Toutefois, eux aussi sont troublés par le vin, égarés par la boisson; prêtre et prophète trébuchent à cause de la boisson, sont étourdis par le vin, pris de vertige par suite d’ivresse; leur vision est devenue trouble et ils vacillent dans leurs jugements.
8 For all their tables are full of filthy vomiting: no place is cleane.
En effet, toutes les tables sont couvertes de vomissures et d’immondices; pas un coin n’y échappe.
9 Whome shall he teache knowledge? and whome shall he make to vnderstand the thinges that hee heareth? them that are weyned from the milke, and drawen from the breastes.
"À qui donc veut-il enseigner la science? À qui inculquer des leçons? À des enfants qui viennent d’être sevrés, de quitter la mamelle.
10 For precept must be vpon precept, precept vpon precept, line vnto line, line vnto line, there a litle, and there a litle.
Ce n’est que loi sur loi, précepte sur précepte, règle sur règle, ordre sur ordre, une vétille par ci, une vétille par là!"
11 For with a stammering tongue and with a strange language shall he speake vnto this people.
Sans doute c’est dans une langue barbare et dans un idiome étranger qu’il parlait à ce peuple,
12 Vnto whome hee saide, This is the rest: giue rest to him that is weary: and this is the refreshing, but they would not heare.
lorsqu’il leur disait: "Ceci est la paix donnez du relâche à ceux qui sont Ias ceci est le repos!" Ils n’ont pas voulu écouter.
13 Therefore shall the worde of the Lord be vnto them precept vpon precept, precept vpon precept, line vnto line, line vnto line, there a litle and there a litle, that they may goe, and fall backward, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
Ils n’ont vu dans la parole du Seigneur que loi sur loi, précepte sur précepte, règle sur règle, ordre sur ordre, une vétille par ci, une vétille par là, de sorte qu’en marchant ils trébuchent en arrière et se brisent, s’engagent dans le piège et s’y embarrassent.
14 Wherefore, heare the worde of the Lord, ye scornefull men that rule this people, which is at Ierusalem.
En vérité, écoutez la parole de l’Eternel, ô gens de raillerie, vous qui dominez ce peuple dans Jérusalem.
15 Because ye haue said, We haue made a couenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement: though a scourge runne ouer, and passe through, it shall not come at vs: for we haue made falshood our refuge, and vnder vanitie are we hid, (Sheol h7585)
Vous avez dit: "Nous avons contracté une alliance—avec la mort, conclu un pacte avec le Cheol; lorsque passera le fléau dévastateur, il ne nous atteindra pas, car nous avons fait de la fraude notre abri et du mensonge notre refuge." (Sheol h7585)
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will laye in Zion a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation. Hee that beleeueth, shall not make haste.
Mais ainsi a parlé le Seigneur, l’Eternel: Voici, je vais, dans Sion, ériger une pierre de fondation, une pierre éprouvée, une précieuse pierre d’angle solidement fixée; quiconque s’y appuiera ne sera pas réduit à fuir.
17 Iudgement also will I laye to the rule, and righteousnesse to the balance, and the haile shall sweepe away the vaine confidence, and the waters shall ouerflowe the secret place.
J’Emploierai le droit comme cordeau et la justice comme fil à plomb; la grêle balayera l’abri de la fraude et les eaux entraîneront son refuge.
18 And your couenant with death shalbe disanulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand: when a scourge shall runne ouer and passe through, then shall ye be trode downe by it. (Sheol h7585)
Alors sera rompue votre alliance avec la mort, votre pacte avec le Cheol ne tiendra pas: lorsque s’avancera le fléau dévastateur, vous en serez écrasés. (Sheol h7585)
19 When it passeth ouer, it shall take you away: for it shall passe through euery morning in the day, and in the night, and there shalbe onely feare to make you to vnderstand the hearing.
Toutes les fois qu’il passera, il vous emportera; matin après matin il passera, le jour et la nuit, et rien que d’en percevoir le bruit sera un sujet d’épouvante.
20 For the bed is streight that it can not suffice, and the couering narowe that one can not wrappe himselfe.
Trop courte sera la couche pour s’y étendre, et trop étroite la couverture pour s’y envelopper.
21 For the Lord shall stand as in mount Perazim: hee shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his worke, his strage worke, and bring to passe his acte, his strange acte.
Car l’Eternel se lèvera comme sur la montagne de Peracim, et il manifestera sa colère comme dans la vallée de Gabaon, pour accomplir son œuvre étrange est son œuvre, et pour exécuter son labeur extraordinaire est son labeur.
22 Nowe therefore be no mockers, least your bondes increase: for I haue heard of the Lord of hostes a consumption, euen determined vpon the whole earth.
Maintenant donc, trêve à vos railleries! Elles renforceraient vos chaînes; car c’est un arrêt de destruction que j’ai entendu prononcer par le Seigneur, l’Eternel-Cebaot, contre tout le pays.
23 Hearken ye, and heare my voyce: hearken ye, and heare my speach.
Prêtez l’oreille et écoutez ma voix, soyez attentifs et entendez mon discours.
24 Doeth the plowe man plowe all the day, to sowe? doeth he open, and breake the clots of his ground?
Le laboureur passe-t-il tout son temps à labourer en vue de semer? À fendre le sol et à promener la herse dans son champ?
25 When he hath made it plaine, wil he not then sowe the fitches, and sowe cummin, and cast in wheat by measure, and the appointed barly and rye in their place?
N’Est-ce pas? Quand il en a égalisé la surface, il y répand de la vesce, y jette du cumin, sème le froment dans les sillons, l’orge aux endroits désignés et l’épeautre sur les bords.
26 For his God doeth instruct him to haue discretion, and doeth teach him.
C’Est son Dieu qui lui a enseigné la règle à suivre, c’est lui qui l’a instruit.
27 For fitches shall not be threshed with a threshing instrument, neither shall a cart wheele be turned about vpon the cummin: but ye fitches are beaten out with a staffe, and cummin with a rod.
De même ce n’est pas avec le rouleau tranchant que la vesce est battue, ce n’est pas la roue du chariot qu’on fait passer sur le cumin: la vesce est battue avec le bâton et le cumin avec la verge.
28 Bread corne when it is threshed, hee doeth not alway thresh it, neither doeth the wheele of his cart still make a noyse, neither will he breake it with the teeth thereof.
Mais le blé dont on fait le pain doit être écrasé; il ne sert de rien de le battre indéfiniment, d’y faire passer avec force les roues du chariot et les chevaux, ce qui ne le réduit pas en poussière.
29 This also commeth from the Lord of hostes, which is wonderfull in counsell, and excellent in workes.
Cela aussi émane de l’Eternel-Cebaot: il conçoit des desseins merveilleux et déploie une haute sagesse.
