Genesis 44
1 Afterward he commanded his steward, saying, Fill the mens sackes with foode, as much as they can carry, and put euery mans money in his sackes mouth.
Et [Joseph] commanda à son maître d'hôtel, en disant: Remplis de vivres les sacs de ces gens, autant qu'ils en pourront porter, et remets l'argent de chacun à l'ouverture de son sac.
2 And put my cup, I meane the siluer cup, in the sackes mouth of the yongest, and his corne money. And he did according to the commandement that Ioseph gaue him.
Et mets ma coupe, la coupe d'argent à l'ouverture du sac du plus petit avec l'argent de son blé; et il fit comme Joseph lui avait dit.
3 And in the morning the men were sent away, they, and their asses.
Le matin dès qu'il fut jour, on renvoya ces hommes avec leurs ânes.
4 And when they went out of the citie not farre off, Ioseph sayd to his stewarde, Vp, follow after the men: and when thou doest ouertake them, say vnto them, Wherefore haue ye rewarded euill for good?
Et lorsqu'ils furent sortis de la ville, avant qu'ils fussent fort loin, Joseph dit à son maître d'hôtel: Va, poursuis ces hommes, et quand tu les auras atteints, dis-leur: Pourquoi avez-vous rendu le mal pour le bien?
5 Is that not the cuppe, wherein my Lord drinketh? and in the which he doeth deuine and prophecie? ye haue done euill in so doing.
N'est-ce pas la coupe dans laquelle mon Seigneur boit, et par laquelle très-assurément il devinera? C'est mal fait à vous d'avoir fait cela.
6 And when he ouertooke them, he sayde those wordes vnto them.
Et il les atteignit, et leur dit ces [mêmes] paroles.
7 And they answered him, Wherefore sayeth my lorde such wordes? God forbid that thy seruants should do such a thing.
Et ils lui répondirent: Pourquoi mon Seigneur parle-t-il ainsi? A Dieu ne plaise que tes serviteurs aient fait une telle chose!
8 Behold, the money which we found in our sackes mouthes, wee brought againe to thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steale out of thy lordes house siluer or golde?
Voici, nous t'avons rapporté du pays de Canaan l'argent que nous avions trouvé à l'ouverture de nos sacs, et comment déroberions-nous de l'argent ou de l'or de la maison de ton maître?
9 With whomesoeuer of thy seruants it bee found, let him dye, and we also will be my lordes bondmen.
Que celui de tes serviteurs à qui on trouvera [la coupe], meure; et nous serons aussi esclaves de mon Seigneur.
10 And he said, Now then let it be according vnto your wordes: he with whome it is found, shall be my seruant, and ye shalbe blamelesse.
Et il leur dit: Qu'il soit fait maintenant selon vos paroles; qu'il soit ainsi; que celui à qui on trouvera [la coupe] me soit esclave, et vous serez innocents.
11 Then at once euery man tooke downe his sacke to the grounde, and euery one opened his sacke.
Et incontinent chacun posa son sac en terre; et chacun ouvrit son sac.
12 And he searched, and began at the eldest and left at the yongest: and the cuppe was found in Beniamins sacke.
Et il fouilla, en commençant depuis le plus grand, et finissant au plus petit; et la coupe fut trouvée dans le sac de Benjamin.
13 Then they rent their clothes, and laded euery man his asse, and went againe into the citie.
Alors ils déchirèrent leurs vêtements, et chacun rechargea son âne, et ils retournèrent à la ville.
14 So Iudah and his brethren came to Iosephs house (for he was yet there) and they fel before him on the ground.
Et Juda vint avec ses frères en la maison de Joseph, qui était encore là, et ils se jetèrent devant lui en terre.
15 Then Ioseph sayd vnto them, What acte is this, which ye haue done? know ye not that such a man as I, can deuine and prophecie?
Et Joseph leur dit: Quelle action avez-vous faite? Ne savez-vous pas qu'un homme tel que moi ne manque pas de deviner?
16 Then sayd Iudah, What shall we say vnto my lord? what shall we speake? and howe can we iustifie our selues? God hath found out the wickednesse of thy seruants: beholde, we are seruants to my Lord, both wee, and he, with whome the cuppe is founde.
Et Juda lui dit: Que dirons-nous à mon Seigneur? Comment parlerons-nous? et comment nous justifierons-nous? Dieu a trouvé l'iniquité de tes serviteurs; voici, nous sommes esclaves de mon Seigneur, tant nous, que celui dans la main auquel la coupe a été trouvée.
17 But he answered, God forbid, that I should doe so, but the man, with whome the cuppe is founde, he shalbe my seruant, and go ye in peace vnto your father.
Mais il dit: A Dieu ne plaise que je fasse cela! l'homme en la main duquel la coupe a été trouvée, me sera esclave; mais vous, remontez en paix vers votre père.
18 Then Iudah drewe neere vnto him, and sayde, O my Lord, let thy seruant nowe speake a worde in my lordes eares, and let not thy wrath be kindled against thy seruant: for thou art euen as Pharaoh.
Alors Juda s'approcha de lui, en disant: Hélas mon Seigneur! je te prie, que ton serviteur dise un mot, et que mon Seigneur l'écoute, et que ta colère ne s'enflamme point contre ton serviteur; car tu es comme Pharaon.
19 My Lord asked his seruants, saying, Haue ye a father, or a brother?
Mon Seigneur interrogea ses serviteurs, en disant: Avez-vous père, ou frère?
20 And we answered my Lord, We haue a father that is olde, and a young childe, which he begate in his age: and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loueth him.
Et nous répondîmes à mon Seigneur: Nous avons notre père qui est âgé, et un enfant qui lui est né en sa vieillesse, et qui est le plus petit [d'entre nous]; son frère est mort, et celui-ci est resté seul de sa mère; et son père l'aime.
21 Now thou saidest vnto thy seruants, Bring him vnto me, that I may set mine eye vpon him.
Or tu as dit à tes serviteurs: Faites-le descendre vers moi, et je le verrai.
22 And we answered my lord, The childe can not depart from his father: for if he leaue his father, his father would die.
Et nous dîmes à mon Seigneur: Cet enfant ne peut laisser son père; car s'il le laisse, son père mourra.
23 Then saydest thou vnto thy seruants, Except your yonger brother come downe with you, looke in my face no more.
Alors tu dis à tes serviteurs: Si votre petit frère ne descend avec vous, vous ne verrez plus ma face.
24 So when we came vnto thy seruant our father, and shewed him what my lord had sayd,
Or il est arrivé qu'étant de retour vers ton serviteur mon père, nous lui rapportâmes les paroles de mon Seigneur.
25 And our father sayde vnto vs, Goe againe, bye vs a litle foode,
Depuis, notre père nous dit: Retournez, et nous achetez un peu de vivres.
26 Then we answered, We can not go downe: but if our yongest brother go with vs, then will we go downe: for we may not see the mans face, except our yongest brother be with vs.
Et nous lui dîmes: Nous ne pouvons y descendre; mais si notre petit frère est avec nous, nous y descendrons, car nous ne saurions voir la face de cet homme, si notre jeune frère n'est avec nous.
27 Then thy seruant my father sayde vnto vs, Ye knowe that my wife bare me two sonnes,
Et ton serviteur mon père nous répondit: Vous savez que ma femme m'a enfanté deux fils,
28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Of a suretie he is torne in pieces, and I sawe him not since.
Dont l'un s'en est allé d'avec moi, et j'ai dit: Certainement il a été déchiré; et je ne l'ai point vu depuis.
29 Nowe yee take this also away from me: if death take him, then yee shall bring my graye head in sorowe to the graue. (Sheol h7585)
Et si vous emmenez aussi celui-ci et que quelque accident mortel lui arrive, vous ferez descendre mes cheveux blancs avec douleur au sépulcre. (Sheol h7585)
30 Nowe therefore, when I come to thy seruant my father, and the childe be not with vs (seeing that his life dependeth on the childes life)
Maintenant donc quand je serai venu vers ton serviteur mon père, si l'enfant, dont l'âme est liée étroitement avec la sienne, n'est point avec nous,
31 Then when hee shall see that the childe is not come, he will die: so shall thy seruants bring the graye head of thy seruant our father with sorowe to the graue. (Sheol h7585)
Il arrivera qu'aussitôt qu'il aura vu que l'enfant ne sera point [avec nous], il mourra; ainsi tes serviteurs feront descendre avec douleur les cheveux blancs de ton serviteur notre père au sépulcre. (Sheol h7585)
32 Doubtlesse thy seruant became suertie for the childe to my father, and said, If I bring him not vnto thee againe, then I will beare the blame vnto my father for euer.
De plus, ton serviteur a répondu de l'enfant [pour l'emmener] d'auprès de mon père, en disant: Si je ne te le ramène, je serai toute ma vie sujet à la peine envers mon père.
33 Nowe therefore, I pray thee, let me thy seruant bide for the childe, as a seruant to my Lord, and let the childe go vp with his brethren.
Ainsi maintenant, je te prie, que ton serviteur soit esclave de mon Seigneur au lieu de l'enfant, et qu'il remonte avec ses frères.
34 For how can I go vp to my father, if the childe be not with me, vnlesse I woulde see the euil that shall come on my father?
Car comment remonterai-je vers mon père, si l'enfant n'est avec moi? Que je ne voie point l'affliction qu'en aurait mon père!
