< Genesis 34 >

1 Then Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare vnto Iaakob, went out to see the daughters of that countrey.
Now Dinah, the daughter whom Leah had by Jacob, went out to see the women of that country.
2 Whome when Shechem the sonne of Hamor the Hiuite lorde of that countrey sawe, hee tooke her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
And when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite who was the chief of that land, saw her, he took her by force and had connection with her.
3 So his heart claue vnto Dinah the daughter of Iaakob: and he loued the maide, and spake kindely vnto the maide.
Then his heart went out in love to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he said comforting words to her.
4 Then said Shechem to his father Hamor, saying, Get me this maide to wife.
And Shechem said to Hamor, his father, Get me this girl for my wife.
5 (Nowe Iaakob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter, and his sonnes were with his cattell in the fielde: therefore Iaakob helde his peace, vntill they were come.)
Now Jacob had word of what Shechem had done to his daughter; but his sons were in the fields with the cattle, and Jacob said nothing till they came.
6 Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out vnto Iaakob to commune with him.
Then Hamor, the father of Shechem, came out to have a talk with Jacob.
7 And whe the sonnes of Iaakob were come out of the fielde and heard it, it grieued the men, and they were very angry, because he had wrought villenie in Israel, in that he had lyen with Iaakobs daughter: which thing ought not to be done.
Now the sons of Jacob came in from the fields when they had news of it, and they were wounded and very angry because of the shame he had done in Israel by having connection with Jacob's daughter; and they said, Such a thing is not to be done.
8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, the soule of my sonne Shechem longeth for your daughter: giue her him to wife, I pray you.
But Hamor said to them, Shechem, my son, is full of desire for your daughter: will you then give her to him for a wife?
9 So make affinitie with vs: giue your daughters vnto vs, and take our daughters vnto you,
And let our two peoples be joined together; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
10 And ye shall dwell with vs, and the lande shalbe before you: dwell, and doe your businesse in it, and haue your possessions therein.
Go on living with us, and the country will be open to you; do trade and get property there.
11 Shechem also said vnto her father and vnto her brethren, Let me finde fauour in your eyes, and I will giue whatsoeuer ye shall appoint me.
And Shechem said to her father and her brothers, If you will give ear to my request, whatever you say I will give to you.
12 Aske of me abundantly both dowrie and giftes, and I will giue as ye appoint me, so that ye giue me the maide to wife.
However great you make the bride-price and payment, I will give it; only let me have the girl for my wife.
13 Then the sonnes of Iaakob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, talking deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister,
But the sons of Jacob gave a false answer to Shechem and Hamor his father, because of what had been done to Dinah their sister.
14 And they said vnto them, We can not do this thing, to giue our sister to an vncircumcised man: for that were a reproofe vnto vs.
And they said, It is not possible for us to give our sister to one who is without circumcision, for that would be a cause of shame to us:
15 But in this will we consent vnto you, if ye will be as we are, that euery man childe among you be circumcised:
But on this condition only will we come to an agreement with you: if every male among you becomes like us and undergoes circumcision;
16 Then will we giue our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to vs, and will dwell with you, and be one people.
Then we will give our daughters to you and take your daughters to us and go on living with you as one people.
17 But if ye will not hearken vnto vs to be circumcised, then will we take our daughter and depart.
But if you will not undergo circumcision as we say, then we will take our daughter and go.
18 Nowe their wordes pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamors sonne.
And their words were pleasing to Hamor and his son Shechem.
19 And the yong man deferd not to doe the thing because he loued Iaakobs daughter: he was also the most set by of all his fathers house.
And without loss of time the young man did as they said, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter, and he was the noblest of his father's house.
20 Then Hamor and Shechem his Sonne went vnto the gate of their citie, and communed with the men of their citie, saying,
Then Hamor and Shechem, his son, went to the meeting-place of their town, and said to the men of the town,
21 These men are peaceable with vs: and that they may dwell in the land, and doe their affaires therin (for behold, the land hath roume ynough for them) let vs take their daughters to wiues, and giue them our daughters.
It is the desire of these men to be at peace with us; let them then go on living in this country and doing trade here, for the country is wide open before them; let us take their daughters as wives and let us give them our daughters.
22 Onely herein will the men consent vnto vs for to dwell with vs, and to be one people, if all the men children among vs be circumcised as they are circumcised.
But these men will make an agreement with us to go on living with us and to become one people, only on the condition that every male among us undergoes circumcision as they have done.
23 Shall not their flockes and their substance and all their cattell be ours? onely let vs consent herein vnto them, and they will dwell with vs.
Then will not their cattle and their goods and all their beasts be ours? so let us come to an agreement with them so that they may go on living with us.
24 And vnto Hamor, and Shechem his sonne hearkened all that went out of the gate of his citie: and all the men children were circumcised, euen all that went out of the gate of his citie.
Then all the men of the town gave ear to the words of Hamor and Shechem his son; and every male in the town underwent circumcision.
25 And on the thirde day (when they were sore) two of the sonnes of Iaakob, Simeon and Leui, Dinahs brethren tooke either of them his sworde and went into the citie boldly, and slue euery male.
But on the third day after, before the wounds were well, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and came into the town by surprise and put all the males to death.
26 They slewe also Hamor and Shechem his sonne with the edge of the sword, and tooke Dinah out of Shechems house, and went their way.
And Hamor and his son they put to death with the sword, and they took Dinah from Shechem's house and went away.
27 Againe the other sonnes of Iaakob came vpon the dead, and spoyled the citie, because they had defiled their sister.
And the sons of Jacob came on them when they were wounded and made waste the town because of what had been done to their sister;
28 They tooke their sheepe and their beeues, and their asses, and whatsoeuer was in the citie, and in the fieldes.
They took their flocks and their herds and their asses and everything in their town and in their fields,
29 Also they caryed away captiue and spoyled all their goods, and all their children and their wiues, and all that was in the houses.
And all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives; everything in their houses they took and made them waste.
30 Then Iaakob said to Simeon and Leui, Ye haue troubled me, and made me stinke among the inhabitats of the land, aswell the Canaanites, as the Perizzites, and and I being few in nomber, they shall gather theselues together against me, and slay me, and so shall I, and my house be destroied.
And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, You have made trouble for me and given me a bad name among the people of this country, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and because we are small in number they will come together against me and make war on me; and it will be the end of me and all my people.
31 And they answered, Shoulde hee abuse our sister as a whore?
But they said, Were we to let him make use of our sister as a loose woman?
