Genesis 33
1 And as Iaakob lift vp his eyes, and looked, behold, Esau came, and with him foure hundreth men: and he deuided the children to Leah, and to Rahel, and to the two maides.
Mais Jacob, levant les yeux, vit Esaü venant, et avec lui quatre cents hommes; il sépara aussitôt les enfants de Lia, de Rachel et des deux servantes;
2 And he put the maides, and their children formost, and Leah, and her children after, and Rahel, and Ioseph hindermost.
Il mit l’une et l’autre servante et leurs enfants en avant. Lia et ses enfants en second lieu, mais Rachel et Joseph les derniers.
3 So he went before them and bowed him selfe to the ground seuen times, vntill he came neere to his brother.
Et lui-même s’avançant, se prosterna, incliné vers la terre par sept fois, jusqu’à ce que son frère approchât.
4 Then Esau ranne to meete him, and embraced him, and fell on his necke, and kissed him, and they wept.
C’est pourquoi Esaü, courant au-devant de son frère, l’embrassa; et, serrant étroitement son cou et le baisant, il pleura.
5 And he lift vp his eyes, and sawe the women, and the children, and saide, Who are these with thee? And he answered, They are ye childre whome God of his grace hath giuen thy seruant.
Puis, les yeux levés, il vit les femmes et leurs petits enfants, et dit: Que signifient ceux-ci? est-ce à toi qu’ils appartiennent? Il répondit: Ce sont les petits enfants que Dieu a donnés à votre serviteur.
6 Then came the maides neere, they, and their children, and bowed themselues.
Et s’approchant, les servantes et leurs fils se prosternèrent.
7 Leah also with her children came neere and made obeysance: and after Ioseph and Rahel drew neere, and did reuerence.
Lia aussi s’approcha avec ses enfants; et quand ils se furent pareillement prosternés, Joseph et Rachel se prosternèrent les derniers.
8 Then he said, What meanest thou by all this droue, which I met? Who answered, I haue sent it, that I may finde fauour in the sight of my lorde:
Alors Esaü dit: Quelles sont ces troupes que j’ai rencontrées? Jacob répondit: C’est pour trouver grâce devant mon seigneur.
9 And Esau said, I haue ynough, my brother: keepe that thou hast to thy selfe.
Mais Esaü reprit: J’ai beaucoup de biens, mon frère, que les tiens restent à toi.
10 But Iaakob answered, Nay, I pray thee: if I haue found grace nowe in thy sight, then receiue my present at mine hande: for I haue seene thy face, as though I had seene the face of God, because thou hast accepted me.
Jacob répondit: Non, je vous prie, qu’il n’en soit pas ainsi; mais si j’ai trouvé grâce à vos yeux, recevez ce petit présent de mes mains; car j’ai vu votre visage, comme si j’eusse vu la face de Dieu: soyez-moi propice.
11 I pray thee take my blessing, that is brought thee: for God hath had mercie on me, and therefore I haue all things: so he compelled him, and he tooke it.
Et recevez cette bénédiction que je vous ai apportée et que m’a donnée Dieu qui donne toutes choses. Esaü la recevant avec peine, son frère le pressant,
12 And he saide, Let vs take our iourney and go, and I will goe before thee.
Dit: Allons ensemble, et je t’accompagnerai dans ton chemin.
13 Then he answered him, My lord knoweth, that the children are tender, and the ewes and kine with yong vnder mine hande: and if they should ouerdriue them one day, all the flocke would die.
Mais Jacob répondit: Vous savez, mon seigneur, que j’ai avec moi de petits enfants bien faibles encore, des brebis et des vaches pleines; si je les fatigue trop par la marche, tous mes troupeaux mourront en un jour.
14 Let now my lord go before his seruant, and I will driue softly, according to ye pase of ye cattel, which is before me, and as the children be able to endure, vntill I come to my lord vnto Seir.
Que mon seigneur précède son serviteur, et moi je le suivrai peu à peu, selon que je verrai que mes petits enfants le pourront faire, jusqu’à ce que je parvienne vers mon seigneur à Séir.
15 Then Esau said, I will leaue then some of my folke with thee. And he answered, what needeth this? let me finde grace in the sight of my lorde.
Esaü repartit: Je te prie, que des gens qui sont avec moi, quelques-uns restent pour t’accompagner. Non, dit Jacob, cela n’est pas nécessaire: la seule chose dont j’ai besoin, c’est de trouver grâce devant vous, mon seigneur.
16 So Esau returned, and went his way that same day vnto Seir.
Esaü donc retourna ce jour-là à Séir, par le même chemin qu’il était venu.
17 And Iaakob went forwarde towarde Succoth, and built him an house, and made boothes for his cattell: therefore he called the name of the place Succoth.
Et Jacob vint à Sochoth, où une maison bâtie et des tentes plantées, il appela ce lieu du nom de Socoth, c’est-à-dire, tentes.
18 Afterward, Iaakob came safe to Sheche a citie, which is in the lande of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram, and pitched before the citie.
Ensuite il passa à Salem, ville des Sichémites, dans le pays de Chanaan, après qu’il fut revenu de la Mésopotamie de Syrie; et il habita auprès de la ville.
19 And there he bought a parcell of ground, where hee pitched his tent, at the hande of the sonnes of Hamor Shechems father, for an hundreth pieces of money.
Et il acheta pour cent agneaux, des enfants d’Hémor, père de Sichem, une portion du champ où il avait planté ses tentes.
20 And he set vp there an altar, and called it, The mightie God of Israel.
Puis, un autel érigé en ce lieu, il invoqua le Dieu très fort d’Israël.
