Genesis 32
1 Nowe Iaakob went forth on his iourney and the Angels of God met him.
Et Jacob continua son chemin, et les Anges de Dieu vinrent au-devant de lui;
2 And when Iaakob saw them, he said, This is Gods hoste, and called the name of the same place Mahanaim.
Et quand Jacob les eut vus, il dit: [C'est] ici le camp de Dieu; et il nomma ce lieu-là Mahanajim.
3 Then Iaakob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, vnto the land of Seir into the countrey of Edom:
Et Jacob envoya des messagers devant soi vers Esaü son frère, au pays de Séhir, dans le territoire d'Edom.
4 To whom he gaue commandement, saying, Thus shall ye speake to my lorde Esau: thy seruant Iaakob sayeth thus, I haue bene a stranger with Laban, and taried vnto this time.
Et leur commanda, en disant: Vous parlerez en cette manière à mon Seigneur Esaü: Ainsi a dit ton serviteur Jacob; j'ai demeuré comme étranger chez Laban, et m'y suis arrêté jusqu'à présent.
5 I haue beeues also and Asses, sheepe, and men seruantes, and women seruantes, and haue sent to shew my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
Et j'ai des bœufs, des ânes, des brebis, des serviteurs, et des servantes; ce que j'envoie annoncer à mon Seigneur, afin de trouver grâce devant lui.
6 So ye messengers came againe to Iaakob, saying, We came vnto thy brother Esau, and hee also commeth against thee and foure hundreth men with him.
Et les messagers retournèrent à Jacob, et lui dirent: Nous sommes venus vers ton frère Esaü, et même il vient au-devant de toi, ayant quatre cents hommes avec lui.
7 Then Iaakob was greatly afraid, and was sore troubled, and deuided the people that was with him, and the sheepe, and the beeues, and the camels into two companies.
Alors Jacob craignit beaucoup, et fut dans une grande angoisse; et ayant partagé le peuple qui était avec lui, et les brebis, et les bœufs, et les chameaux en deux bandes, il dit:
8 For he said, If Esau come to ye one company and smite it, the other companie shall escape.
Si Esaü vient à l'une de ces bandes, et qu'il la frappe, la bande qui demeurera de reste échappera.
9 Moreouer Iaakob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Izhak: Lord, which saydest vnto me, Returne vnto thy coutrey and to thy kinred, and I will do thee good,
Jacob dit aussi: Ô Dieu de mon père Abraham, Dieu de mon père Isaac, ô Eternel qui m'as dit: Retourne en ton pays, et vers ta parenté, et je te ferai du bien.
10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and al the trueth, which thou hast shewed vnto thy seruant: for with my staffe came I ouer this Iorden, and now haue I gotte two bads.
Je suis trop petit au prix de toutes tes gratuités, et de toute la vérité dont tu as usé envers ton serviteur; car j'ai passé ce Jourdain avec mon bâton, mais maintenant je m'en [retourne] avec ces deux bandes.
11 I pray thee, Deliuer me from the hande of my brother, from the hande of Esau: for I feare him, least he will come and smite me, and the mother vpon the children.
Je te prie, délivre-moi de la main de mon frère Esaü; car je crains qu'il ne vienne, et qu'il ne me frappe, et [qu'il ne tue] la mère avec les enfants.
12 For thou saydest; I will surely doe thee good, and make thy seede as the sande of the sea, which can not be nombred for multitude.
Or tu as dit: Certes, je te ferai du bien, et je ferai devenir ta postérité comme le sable de la mer, lequel on ne saurait compter à cause de son grand nombre.
13 And he taryed there the same night, and tooke of that which came to had, a present for Esau his brother:
Et il passa la nuit en ce lieu-là, et prit de ce qui lui vint en main pour en faire un présent à Esaü son frère.
14 Two hundreth shee goates and twenty hee goates, two hundreth ewes and twentie rammes:
[Savoir] deux cents chèvres, vingt boucs, deux cents brebis, vingt moutons.
15 Thirtie mylche camels with their coltes, fourtie kine, and ten bullockes, twentie she asses and ten foles.
Trente femelles de chameaux qui allaitaient, et leurs petits; quarante jeunes vaches, dix jeunes taureaux, vingt ânesses, et dix ânons.
16 So he deliuered them into the hande of his seruants, euery droue by themselues, and saide vnto his seruants, Passe before me, and put a space betweene droue and droue.
Et il les mit entre les mains de ses serviteurs, chaque troupeau à part, et leur dit: Passez devant moi, et faites qu'il y ait de la distance entre un troupeau et l'autre.
17 And he commanded the formost, saying, If Esau my brother meete thee, and aske thee, saying, Whose seruant art thou? And whither goest thou? And whose are these before thee?
Et il commanda au premier, disant: Quand Esaü mon frère te rencontrera, et te demandera, disant: A qui es-tu? et où vas-tu? et à qui sont ces choses qui sont devant toi?
18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy seruant Iaakobs: it is a present sent vnto my lord Esau: and beholde, he him selfe also is behinde vs.
Alors tu diras: Je suis à ton serviteur Jacob: c'est un présent qu'il envoie à mon Seigneur Esaü; et le voilà lui-même après nous.
19 So likewise commanded he the seconde and the thirde, and all that followed the droues, saying, After this maner, ye shall speake vnto Esau, when ye finde him.
Il fit aussi le même commandement au second, et au troisième, et à tous ceux qui allaient après les troupeaux, disant: Vous parlerez en ces termes-ci à Esaü, quand vous l'aurez trouvé;
20 And ye shall say moreouer, Beholde, thy seruant Iaakob commeth after vs (for he thought, I will appease his wrath with the present that goeth before me, and afterwarde I will see his face: it may be that he will accept me.)
Et vous lui direz: Voici même ton serviteur Jacob est derrière nous. Car il disait: J'apaiserai sa colère par ce présent qui ira devant moi, et après cela, je verrai sa face; peut-être qu'il me regardera favorablement.
21 So went the present before him: but he taried that night with the companie.
Le présent donc alla devant lui; mais pour lui il demeura cette nuit-là avec sa troupe.
22 And he rose vp the same night, and tooke his two wiues, and his two maides, and his eleuen children, and went ouer the forde Iabbok.
Et il se leva cette nuit, et prit ses deux femmes, et ses deux servantes, et ses onze enfants, et passa le gué de Jabbok.
23 And he tooke them, and sent them ouer the riuer, and sent ouer that he had.
Il les prit donc, et leur fit passer le torrent; il fit aussi passer tout ce qu'il avait.
24 Now when Iaakob was left him selfe alone, there wrestled a man with him vnto the breaking of the day.
Or Jacob étant resté seul, un homme lutta avec lui, jusqu'à ce que l'aube du jour fût levée.
25 And he sawe that he could not preuaile against him: therefore he touched the holowe of his thigh, and the holowe of Iaakobs thigh was loosed, as he wrestled with him.
Et quand [cet homme] vit qu'il ne le pouvait pas vaincre, il toucha l'endroit de l'emboîture de sa hanche; ainsi l'emboîture de l'os de la hanche de Jacob fut démise quand l'homme luttait avec lui.
26 And he saide, Let me goe, for the morning appeareth. Who answered, I will not let thee go except thou blesse me.
Et [cet homme] lui dit: Laisse-moi, car l'aube du jour est levée. Mais il dit: Je ne te laisserai point que tu ne m'aies béni.
27 Then said he vnto him, What is thy name? And he said, Iaakob.
Et [cet homme] lui dit: Quel est ton nom? Il répondit: Jacob.
28 Then said he, Thy name shalbe called Iaakob no more, but Israel: because thou hast had power with God, thou shalt also preuaile with men.
Alors il dit: Ton nom ne sera plus Jacob, mais Israël; car tu as été le maître [en luttant] avec Dieu et avec les hommes, et tu as été le plus fort.
29 Then Iaakob demaded, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore now doest thou aske my name? and he blessed him there
Et Jacob demanda, disant: Je te prie, déclare-moi ton nom. Et il répondit: Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom? Et il le bénit là.
30 And Iaakob called the name of the place, Peniel: for, saide he, I haue seene God face to face, and my life is preserued.
Et Jacob nomma le lieu, Péniel; car j'ai, [dit-il], vu Dieu face à face, et mon âme a été délivrée.
31 And the sunne rose vp to him as he passed Peniel, and he halted vpon his thigh.
Et le soleil se leva aussitôt qu'il eut passé Péniel, et il boitait d'une hanche.
32 Therefore the children of Israel eate not of the sinewe that shranke in the hollowe of the thigh, vnto this day: because he touched the sinew that shranke in the holow of Iaakobs thigh.
C'est pourquoi jusqu'à ce jour les enfants d'Israël ne mangent point du muscle se retirant, qui est à l'endroit de l'emboîture de la hanche; parce que [cet homme-là] toucha l'endroit de l'emboîture de la hanche de Jacob, à l'endroit du muscle se retirant.
