Genesis 20

1 Afterward Abraham departed thence toward the South countrey and dwelled betweene Cadesh and Shur, and soiourned in Gerar.

Et Abraham s'en alla de là au pays de Midi, et demeura entre Kadès et Sur, et il habita comme étranger à Guérar.

2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. Then Abimelech King of Gerar sent and tooke Sarah.

Or Abraham dit de Sara sa femme: C'est ma sœur; et Abimélec, Roi de Guérar, envoya, et prit Sara.

3 But God came to Abimelech in a dreame by night, and said to him, Beholde, thou art but dead, because of the woman, which thou hast taken: for she is a mans wife.

Mais Dieu apparut la nuit dans un songe à Abimélec, et lui dit: Voici, tu es mort, à cause de la femme que tu as prise, car elle a un mari.

4 (Notwithstanding Abimelech had not yet come neere her) And he said, Lord, wilt thou slay euen the righteous nation?

Or Abimélec ne s'était point approché d'elle. Et il dit: Seigneur, feras-tu donc mourir une nation juste?

5 Said not he vnto me, She is my sister? yea, and she her selfe said, He is my brother: with an vpright minde, and innocent handes haue I done this.

Ne m'a-t-il pas dit: C'est ma sœur? Et elle-même aussi n'a-t-elle pas dit: C'est mon frère? J'ai fait ceci dans l'intégrité de mon cœur, et dans la pureté de mes mains.

6 And God saide vnto him by a dreame, I knowe that thou diddest this euen with an vpright minde, and I kept thee also that thou shouldest not sinne against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touche her.

Et Dieu lui dit en songe: Je sais que tu l'as fait dans l'intégrité de ton cœur, et aussi ai-je empêché que tu ne péchasses contre moi; c'est pourquoi je n'ai pas permis que tu la touchasses.

7 Now then deliuer the man his wife againe: for he is a Prophet, and he shall pray for thee that thou mayest liue: but if thou deliuer her not againe, be sure that thou shalt die the death, thou, and all that thou hast.

Maintenant donc rends à cet homme-là sa femme, car il est Prophète; et il priera pour toi, et tu vivras. Mais si tu ne la rends pas, sache que tu mourras de mort, avec tout ce qui est à toi.

8 Then Abimelech rising vp early in ye morning, called all his seruants, and tolde all these things vnto them, and the men were sore afraid.

Et Abimélec se leva de bon matin, et appela tous ses serviteurs, et leur rapporta toutes ces choses, eux l'écoutant; et ils furent saisis de crainte.

9 Afterward Abimelech called Abraham, and said vnto him, What hast thou done vnto vs? and what haue I offeded thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdome this great sinne? thou hast done things vnto me that ought not to be done.

Puis Abimélec appela Abraham, et lui dit: Que nous as-tu fait? Et en quoi t'ai-je offensé, que tu aies fait venir sur moi et sur mon royaume un grand péché? Tu m'as fait des choses qui ne se doivent point faire.

10 So Abimelech said vnto Abraham, What sawest thou that thou hast done this thing?

Abimélec dit aussi à Abraham: Qu'as-tu vu [qui t'ait obligé] de faire cela?

11 Then Abraham answered, Because I thought thus, Surely the feare of God is not in this place, and they will slay me for my wiues sake.

Et Abraham répondit: C'est parce que je disais: Assurément il n'y a point de crainte de Dieu en ce lieu-ci, et ils me tueront à cause de ma femme.

12 Yet in very deede she is my sister: for she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she is my wife.

Et aussi, à la vérité, elle est ma sœur, fille de mon père; mais elle n'est pas fille de ma mère; et elle m'a été donnée pour femme.

13 Nowe when God caused me to wander out of my fathers house, I said then to her, This is thy kindnes that thou shalt shewe vnto me in all places where we come, Say thou of me, He is my brother.

Et il est arrivé que je lui ai dit, lors que Dieu ma conduit çà et là, hors de la maison de mon père; c'est ici la grâce que tu me feras, dis de moi dans tous les lieux où nous irons: C'est mon frère.

14 Then tooke Abimelech sheepe and beeues, and men seruants, and women seruants, and gaue them vnto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

Alors Abimélec prit des brebis, des bœufs, des serviteurs, et des servantes, et les donna à Abraham, et lui rendit Sara, sa femme.

15 And Abimelech saide, Beholde, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.

Et [lui] dit: Voici mon pays est à ta disposition, demeure où il te plaira.

16 Likewise to Sarah he said, Beholde, I haue giuen thy brother a thousand pieces of siluer: behold, he is the vaile of thine eyes to all that are with thee, and to all others: and she was thus reproued.

Et il dit à Sara: Voici, j'ai donné à ton frère mille [pièces] d'argent; voici, il t'est une couverture d'yeux envers tous ceux qui sont avec toi, et envers tous les [autres]; et ainsi elle fut reprise.

17 Then Abraham prayed vnto God, and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his women seruants: and they bare children.

Et Abraham fit requête à Dieu; et Dieu guérit Abimélec, sa femme, et ses servantes; et elles eurent des enfants.

18 For the Lord had shut vp euery wombe of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abrahams wife.

Car l'Eternel avait entièrement resserré toute matrice de la maison d'Abimélec, à cause de Sara femme d'Abraham.
